Story Analysis
Title: A Day in the Country
Author: Anton Chekhov
Publication Date: 1886
Characters: Fyokla - the little girl beggar in the story.
Terenty – the cobbler in the story.
Danilka – an eight- year old little fellow.
Silanty Slitch – the Terenty’s bossom friend and sacristan.
Setting: The story is set in the Russian countryside, depicting the contrast between urban
and rural life.
Time Period: The story is set in the late 19th century, reflecting the societal norms and
values of that era.

Themed: Themes in the story include nature, human connection, the passage of time, and
the contrast between urban and rural lifestyles.
Plot Structure:
Exposition: There were two orphans, Fyokla and Danilka they’re both beggars living in a
small village in Russia. The story happens in the village forest near their hometown where a
thick black cloud forming in the sky and a threatening storm is a learning between eight and
nine o’clock in the morning.
Rising Action: One day, while they were wandering around the forest, a threatening storm is
appearing forcing the people surrounding the village to move out. Unfortunately, Danilka’s
hand was trapped in a thicket.
Climax: Fyokla called the town cobbler, Terenty, to help his brother to pull his hands put of
the tree and they found Danilka, they successfully released the hand of Danilka from the
tree.
Falling Action: The storm passed and Uncle Terenty lectured them about ways of nature as
they walked out. The sun started to rise. Danilka was enthralled with what he had
discovered and they’re enjoying the beauty of the nature.
Resolution: They finally reached the village. Danilka was still astounded by nature and its
beauty as the children fell asleep, Terenty came and prayed over them.
