Introduction
Agriculture is an economic activity based in producing food and other products by
farming the land. In Mozambique agriculture is one of biggest mains or sources of food to feed
many families most of them living in poor areas. Agriculture in Mozambique is mainly rain-
dependent and it is expected that fertilizer production from gas oil by products can in the near
future improve the Mozambican dependency in this sector. Ewell Roy (1980) defined
agribusiness as the “the coordinating science of supplying agricultural production inputs, and
subsequently producing, processing and distribution food and fiber.” This research treats about
How can agribusiness secure food in Mozambique where food is a big problem while is rich in
very productive lands. According to World Health Organization Mozambique is one of many
African Countries that food secure is still far to be guaranteed, so this document will explain
clearly how can agribusiness bring solutions to food secure in Mozambique.
With some 28 million habitants, and growing fast yearly, the country population is
mostly young and increasingly urban. Mozambique may never be selfsufficient in food nor this
condition and agricultural supremacy has historically proved to be the defining feature of growth
across the world (World Bank, 2015). With a long coast of some 3000km, fisheries have not
been a strong investment, and the latest tuna fish enterprises never got out of the ground. Instead,
paradoxically, inland fish production, dependable on feeds and supplements, have been growing
slowly (Barnes et al., 2002). The Census activity in Mozambique, conducted every 10 years,
including the last one (August 2017) (Mozambique’s National Statistics Institute, 2017),
considers human population, food crops, livestock and fisheries. However, the data gathered
once real, fruits, beans, oil crops, and tuber/root crops, tea, tobacco, fish, meat, poultry and eggs
are not enough to draw a link between nutrition food consumption and food production. Milk and
dairy products are almost not produced nationally. Forestry is a complex issue with corruption
still involved on illegal exports of timber although the paper industry has been growing. Food
production (primary crops and livestock products) has been growing but at smaller rate than the
population growth rate, which is alarming concerning the ability of the country to self-insure
against food insecurity (Makino, 2013). However there is strong evidence and general
recognition that Mozambique, with only 16 % of land suitable for farming being currently
cultivated, can relevantly increase production and become a surplus country, and also contribute
to food and nutrition security of the southern Africa region (World Bank 2017). The
macroeconomic environment and prospects are favorable to the increase of investments in the
sector and rural areas.
Subsistence farmers produce mainly white maize, cassava, beans, peanuts, fruits and
palm oil are the main foods for rural people. Sugar and salt are also produced by larger farmers.
Food supply for the population is not assured in Mozambique or indeed Southern Africa, without
both food imports, namely soya from USA and transgenic maize, and a serious effort to boost
food production, even if based on the scarcity of inputs such as adequate water and fertilizers.
The rather neglected of agriculture in Mozambique can be linked to the country’s focus on the
extraction of precious gas/minerals (USAID 2017) and this not lead to success.
Agriculture, fisheries and forestry are, and will be in the future, relevant players in the
Mozambican economy and are fundamental determinants of people diets. In 2009, the agriculture
contribution to GDP crop production was dominant (78%). Next came forestry (9%), livestock
(7%) and fisheries (6%). About 80% of the population, from which 73% living in rural areas is
heavily depended on agriculture as their primary source of livelihood (Taglioni and Winkler,
2016). The described agriculture production and productivity conditions can explain that the
nutritional situation in Mozambique remains very poor with 44% of children under age of five
being chronically malnourished (stunted) due to chronic illness and poor diet (FAO, 2010).
Underweight affects about 18% of children which in rural areas are almost twice as underweight
as those living in towns and cities. The level of wealth of the families in which the children live
is fundamental in their nutritional status. As expected, the more economic resources the family
has, the lower the rate of underweight of children under the age of five is found, and in towns
cases of obesity are starting to occur (FAO, 2013). Cassava and maize, with low protein content,
are the main components of diets in the northern provinces of Mozambique. Maize is the most
important staple in the centre and southern provinces of the country. In the cities, households
consume mostly maize and imported wheat. The supply of micronutrient-rich foods (other
vegetables, fruit, and foods of animal origin), is very low, apart from green leafy vegetables,
which are often consumed with the staples. About 80% of the dietary energy is supplied by
cereals, starchy roots and tubers. This diet is currently the lowest in the region, with a poor level
of diversification not being improved for the last 40 years and (UNICEF, 2016) due to limited
variety of production, difficult access (both physical and financial) to quality foods, scarce
nutrition knowledge and limitations affecting child feeding and care such as women’s heavy
workload and duties. Bipolarity characterizes Mozambique’s agriculture, split between 3.2
million smallholders, producing 95% of the agricultural GDP, and about 400 commercial farmers
in charge of the remaining 5%. Only less than 10% of the arable land is used under rain fed
conditions (only 3% of the arable land is currently irrigated). A large part of this area is affected
by frequent droughts and floods (Pienaar, 2015). The access to credit and markets is difficult,
and the low productivity, the predominance of rain fed agriculture make agriculture a very
vulnerable sector and implies a high dependence on food imports (FAO, 2007b). Low uptake of
modern production technologies are responsible for a small.
The term ‘agribusiness’ was coined by two Harvard Economists, Johan Davis and Ray
Goldberg in 1957.
• They defined agribusiness as "the sum total of all operations involved in the
manufacture and distribution of farm supplies; production operations on the farm; and the
storage, processing and distribution of farm commodities and items made from them.” •
Agribusiness actually includes all enterprises derived ‘from’ and ‘around’ agricultural
production. Ewell Roy (1980) defined agribusiness as the “the coordinating science of supplying
agricultural production inputs, and subsequently producing, processing and distribution food and
fiber.” • Agribusiness is concisely defined as “a generic term that refers to the various businesses
involved in food and fiber production (including farming), seed supply, agrichemicals, farm
machinery, wholesale and distribution, processing, marketing, and retail sales.” • The definition
of agribusiness also includes agroservices and international trade.
1) The Inputs Subsystem: This is the first subsystem from which all other agribusiness
subsystems emanate. Here, all inputs (e.g. fertilizers, seeds, machineries, etc.) are manufactured,
imported or distributed.
2) The Production Subsystem: Inputs are directly used for the production of an
agricultural commodity as end-product in itself or as a raw material for the production of other
products.
3) The Processing Subsystem: The commodities from the production subsystem are
transformed into various products. The levels of transformation depend upon the level of
processing, which can be as simple as washing and grading to as complex as chemical alteration.
4) The Marketing Subsystem: This subsystem is concerned with the transfer of goods from
source to enduser. It includes all handling procedures and infrastructures that move the
commodities from one point to another. The marketing subsystem may take the following routes:
(1) transfer of agricultural inputs from manufacturers to farm input users; (2) transfer of
commodities from production site to processing site; (3) transfer of commodities from processing
site to endconsumers
5) The Support Subsystem: consists of all the key players that provide services, however,
optional, but crucial to the success of an agribusiness venture. These services are provided by
institutions such as government agencies, commercial associations, credit and financing, research
organizations and cooperatives. • The government plays an important role in providing a policy
environment that is favorable to agribusiness enterprises such as policies on prices, imports,
exports and general trading.
• All the subsystems are strongly interrelated, and the coordination among them is a
necessary for success of agribusiness.
• The input supply industries, production agriculture, and value added activities are
considered the agribusiness core industries.
• Similarly, these core industries use the material and services of certain ancillary
industries which are considered agribusiness support industries.
As it was said above, Mozambique is rich in potential land of producing but the type of
agriculture generally practiced does not secure food due the productivity because it depends in
the nature (rain). Agrobusineness can influence food secure in Mozambique firstly by increasing
the productivity, (How?) The use of equipment’s and fertilizers will reduce the effort and
increase the productivity because they will farm extensive lands, farmers will not depend on rain
to produce and fertilizers will obviously multiply the current productivity. Agrobusiness will
guarantee the access of food and disponibility of will reduce the lack of food or hunger.
Summarizing the agribusiness will positively influence by increasing the productivity and reduce
the effort of human resources.
Reseach Methods
According to Hummar (2013) method is a way of doing something to reach the designed
objectives. Research methodology is a collective term for the structured process of conducting
research. There are many different methodologies used in various types of research and the term
is usually considered to include research design, data gathering and data analysis. Research
methodology seeks to inform: Why a research study has been undertaken, how the research
problem has been defined, in what way and why the hypothesis has been formulated, what data
have been collected and what particular method has been adopted, why particular technique of
analysing data has been used and a host of similar other questions are usually answered when we
talk of research methodology concerning a research problem or study.
Taking in account that this is a qualitative reseach, the methodologies that can be used
are:
A literature review;
A observation Method;
A Interview; and
A Inquiry.
The quality of the data collected in an interview will depend on both the interview design
and on the skill of the interviewer. For example, a poorly designed interview may include
leading questions or questions that are not understood by the subject. A poor interviewer may
consciously or unconsciously influence the responses that the subject makes. In either
circumstance, the research findings will be influenced detrimentally.
Conclusion
Ewell Roy (1980) defined agribusiness as the “the coordinating science of supplying
agricultural production inputs, and subsequently producing, processing and distribution food and
fiber.” The Mozambican primary sector production is largely dominated by agriculture, gas or
minerals. As in other less developed economy, the primary sector (e.g. fishing, farming and
mining) includes the most important. Usually, with the development of a country, the increase of
labour productivity enables workers to leave the agricultural sector and migrate to other sectors,
such as industry and the service sector.It is known that in developed economies there is a decline
within primary sectors share of the economy, leading to structural unemployment for a period.
Agribusiness involves (1) inputs—seeds, fertilizer, financing, equipment—that are used in
production; (2) intermediate activities— grading, storage, processing, packaging, distribution,
pricing, marketing; and (3) final consumption activities—restaurants, groceries.
