Modifications to this pattern

With a few simple changes, this beautiful timeless doll has been transformed into a Wise man crouching
to meet the ‘King of Kings, Jesus’.

The addition of a flowing cape, textured hat, treasure and a beard was all that was needed. A few
stitches in the right places and this Wise man will be crouching down to meet baby Jesus.

PLEASE NOTE: The instructions for the embroidery and subtle colour change on his robe NOT included
in this pattern. Have some fun and add whatever you want to personalise your Wise man.

Changes to the Body
The body is crocheted exactly the same as the original pattern ‘Mother nursing newborn’. To make your
Wise man appear to crouch, you will need to sew a few stitches.

2 3
1: Using a long length of yarn that matches 3: Insert the handle of a
the dolls robe: folded in half - Thread the cut crochet hook into the loop
ends into the needle. I have used white so at the bottom of the doll,
that it matches the top half of the robe. so that you don’t accidently
pull the yarn all the way
2: Sew from the base of the body up to the through.
1 front of the body as far as you can reach with 2
your needle.

The doll’s beard

will cover up the
dip in the dolls
chest.
4 5 6
4: Insert the needle back through the same hole that you came out of and
sew up to the dolls chest area. If you have an extra-long needle, you will
be able to sew straight to the chest position.

5: Insert the needle through a different hole and sew back down to the
base of the body (you will probably need to repeat the process to get
back to the base as you did when sewing to the chest) 7

6: Insert the needle through the loop that you have at the base of the body.

7: While folding your doll forward: secure at the base of the doll. You will notice that there is a dip in the dolls chest where the
stitching pulls. This will be covered by the beard.

8: Repeat for the back section: only this

time sewing to the centre back to pull in
the back section. I used green yarn for
this step because the back of the robe
8 was green.

Wise man’s Hair
Sewing on the centre part: Because this Wise man is wearing a crown/hat, you will only need to sew on 4
lengths of yarn to the front of his head. If you wish to give your doll curly hair you can download a FREE PDF on
‘Curling your yarn’.

1: Using a length of yarn: Sew onto the front of the cap. Make sure to only catch a small amount of the cap. 2:
Fold the yarn in half before sewing the next step, so that you can find half way of this piece of yarn. 3: Over
sew into the same spot as before. 4: You can see where the thread is looped. 5: Take the thread over to the
other side of the head and you have just completed your first strand of hair.

Repeat steps 1 – 5 making sure that you sew each one close to the last one. You will only need to sew on 4
pieces of yarn if you are using the hat in this pattern.

4 5 NB: These pictures are

for demonstration
purposes. The colour of
yarn is different from the
doll in this pattern.

There is no need to
sew hair to the back
of the dolls head
because the cape
collar will cover it.

Now it’s time to give your doll some manly features  A

beard and moustache will definitely help.

If you want your doll to have curls you can download my

Beard

Beard Base
Start with a Chain 12

1sc into 1st ch from hook, 2hdc, 5dc, 2hdc, 1sc (11)

Fasten off leaving a long thread for sewing onto the doll.

Beard
Cut 11 strands of yarn approx. 15cm long. Each strand of yarn will be folded in half and attached to the top of
the beard as instructed.

When making a beard: keep it as long as you can for as long as you can. Don’t trim it until you are certain of the
length that will suit your Wise man 

2: Pull the rest of the yarn The beard piece will

through the loop and pull look like this. DO NOT
tightly. Repeat along the trim it until it has
1: Insert the hook from the right side into
top of the beard. been sewn onto your
top of the beard and pull the folded yarn

through

Moustache
Taking a few strands of yarn: Tie them together
in the centre. Leave a long length of yarn for
sewing onto the dolls head.
Here he is with the
left half of the beard
unravelled. It makes
a huge difference.

Attaching the beard

Using the thread that is still attached to the beard base: Position the beard onto
the doll. Pin into place and sew neatly across the top of the beard attaching it to
the head.

Unravel the yarn so that your Wise man has a lovely curly/wavy beard.

Attaching the moustache

Sew the moustache onto the dolls head above the beard. Weave in the ends.

How cute is that little mouth under his moustache 

Now it is time to make him a treasure box. Then put on his crown and cape and
this Wise man will be ready to meet Baby Jesus.

Treasure Box
Rnd 1: start with 6 sc into MR, pull tight (6sts)

Rnd 2: *inc* x 6 times (12sts)

Rnd 3: *inc, 1sc* x 6 times (18sts)

Rnd 4 - 7: (4 rounds) blo sc18 (18)

Sew the starting thread through to the right side of the base. You will be using this later to pull up the base of
the treasure box.

Rnd 8: (blo) *sc2tog, sc1* x 6 times (12)

Rnd 9: (through both loops) sc2 tog x 6 times (6)

FASTEN OFF leaving a long length of yarn for closing the top of the treasure box.

1: Lightly stuff the treasure box: using the handle end of a crochet hook to get it into the opening.

2: Using the yarn attached to the top of the treasure box: sew the yarn through the last 6 stitches. Pull tight
to close the opening. Secure the yarn and weave in the end of the yarn.

3: Bring yarn that is attached to the base of the treasure box: from the base up to the top of the treasure
box.

4: Push the base up so that it is flat and secure the thread. Wrap the yarn around the top to form a knob and
secure. FASTEN OFF and weave in the end of the yarn.

Decorate your box as desired.

Time to sew on the crown and cape.

Attach yarn
here

1 2 3

1: Lightly stuff the crown/hat.

2: Pin the crown onto the doll’s

head. Sew the crown onto the
doll’s head using matching
yarn.

3: Sew a length of yarn onto the

cape using matching yarn.

4: Lay the doll onto the cape

and lift up the dolls beard to
keep it out of your way.

5: Sew across to the other side of the cape and back again to your
starting point. Tie the yarn together and weave in the ends. Do not
sew the cape to the doll’s body. It is a good idea to be able to keep it
4 loose so that you can straighten it once it is attached 

Sew the treasure box into your Wise man’s hands.
