Sultan Abdul Samad

Architect: Arthur Benison Hubback, Regent Alfred John Bidwell, Arthur

Charles Alfred Norman

Function of building: The building was initially used to centralise administrative

offices by the British administration, and was known as Government Offices in
its early years. It had also once housed Malaysia's superior courts – the Federal
Court of Malaysia, the Court of Appeals and the High Court of Malaya. The
complete structure housed various important government departments during
the British administration. The building, simply known as Government Offices
in early Kuala Lumpur maps, housed the Federal Secretariat of the then-
Federated Malay States (FMS) which was formed in 1896.

Basic structure elements: The strong brick facade, curved colonnades and
imposing arches are striking features of Sultan Abdul Samad Building. The
building is adorned with two towers topped with copper onion domes. The
centre of the two storey building is flanked by a tall clock tower measuring 41
m in height.

Westminster palace
Architect: Sir, Charles Barry

Function of building: The Palace of Westminster continues to be used as the

seat of the United Kingdom's two-chamber system of democracy. St Margaret's
Church, now part of Westminster Abbey, remains at heart a medieval parish
church, ministering to Members of both Houses of Parliament.
Basic structure elements: The Palace is one of the most significant monuments
of neo-Gothic architecture, as an outstanding, coherent and complete example

of neo-Gothic style. Westminster Hall is a key monument of the Perpendicular

style and its admirable oak roof is one of the greatest achievements of medieval
construction in wood.

Differences:
 Primary material in building Westminster palace is anstone stone while
sultan Abdul samed uses clay brick as the main form of Mansory.
 Pinnacles topping the Westminster palace while sultan Abdul samed uses
a dome.
 Scale of Westminster building is much larger than sultan Abdul samed.
 Westminster palace: perpendicular gothic. Sultan Abdul samed:
mahometan
 Use of arches in sultan Abdul samed, to help with ventilation to cool
down the structure, not needed in England because of climate differences.

Similarities:
 Clock tower
 Courtyards
 Both buildings were center of administrative works
 Both buildings make use of mansory
 Both are historical landmarks
