Percent Change
Adapted from Lesmeister, M. (2014). Math Basics for the Health Care Professional.
Pearson: Boston, MA.
Change is ever present in our lives. A percent change can represent an increase or a
decrease. We calculate percent change for fees, medical doses, weight, income, and
so on. You may use a simple formula to help determine percent change.

Amount of Change = Fraction of change (percentage change)

Original (usual) number

Step 1: Set up the fraction of change

Step 2: Use proportion to set up a percent conversion. Remember that percent
means out of one hundred.

Example A
The patient was told by his doctor to lose weight. He weighed 180 pounds. After being
On a supervised diet and exercise plan for one year, he now weighs 120 pounds.
What is the percent of change of the amount of weight he lost?

Change in weight: 180 - 120 = 60 pounds

60 pounds (change in weight) = _X (percentage change)
180 pounds (original weight) 100

Step 1: 60 X 100 = 6,000

Step 2: 6,000 ÷ 180 = 33 ⅓%
So, the 60 pounds he lost represent a 33 ⅓% weight loss.

Example B
A female patient has gained weight. She currently weighs 175 pounds. Her usual weight
is 125 pounds.
a) What is her percentage change?

Change in weight: 175 - 125 = 50 pounds

Amount of Change (50 pounds) = _X (percentage change)

Original (usual) number (125 pounds) 100

Step 1: 50 X 100 = 5,000

Step 2: 5,000 ÷ 125 = 40%
So, the 50 pounds she gained represent a 40% weight gain.

b) Currently what is her percentage of her usual weight?

Current weight (175 pounds) = _X (percentage change)

Original (usual) number (125 pounds) 100
Step 1: 175 X 100 = 17,500
Step 2: 17,500 ÷ 125 = 140%
So, this patient current weighs of 175 pounds is 140% of her usual weight.

Example C
An employee reduced her monthly workdays from 20 days to 16 days.
What percentage of the change in the number of her monthly days of work?

Amount of Change (4 days) = _X (percentage change)

Original (usual) number (20 days) 100
Step 1: 4 X 100 = 400
Step 2: 400 ÷ 20 = 20%
So, the employee is now working 20% less days per month.
