Learning Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

1. Identify the four main writing styles: narrative, expository, persuasive, and
descriptive.
2. Understand the four main writing styles.
3. Practice writing short passages in each style.
4. Recall author's purpose.

Prior Learning: Students have knowledge of various writing tasks that are organized in such a way to

appeal to specific audiences.

Engagement: (10 Display short passages of text on the board, each representing one of the writing styles.

Students will be asked to listen each passage being read and they will be engaged in a
discussion about them.
Passage 1:
"The sun hung low in the sky as we set out on our camping adventure. We pitched our
tents by the serene lake, and the smell of the campfire filled the air. The crackling of the
firewood was music to our ears. We roasted marshmallows and told ghost stories under
the starry night sky."

Writing Style: Descriptive

Passage 2:
"In the heart of the rainforest, the diversity of plant and animal species is astounding.
From the towering canopy to the forest floor, each layer is teeming with life. This
delicate ecosystem relies on a complex web of interactions among its inhabitants."
Writing Style: Expository
Passage 3:
"Join our eco-club and be part of the solution to protect our planet. Together, we can
make a difference. Act now, and let's work towards a greener and sustainable future!"

Passage 4:
"Once upon a time, in a small village nestled among rolling hills, there lived a young

Exploration/Extension: Distribute handouts with sample texts, each labeled with one of the four writing styles.

(20 minutes) In pairs or small groups, students should read the texts and identify which style is used.

Content Encourage them to highlight specific phrases or sentences that exemplify the chosen
style.

After discussion, have groups share their findings with the class.

Passage 1:

"Dear Mom and Dad, I hope this letter finds you well. I wanted to share my experiences
from the summer camp. It was a truly unforgettable adventure, filled with new friends,
exciting activities, and valuable life lessons."

Writing Style: Narrative

Passage 2:

Explain that writers choose a particular style based on their purpose and
audience. Do you remember Author's Purpose? PIE? What Author's Purpose is
for what Writing Style?
Elaboration: Provide students with a writing prompt for each of the four styles. For example:

Expository: "Explain the process of photosynthesis or the water cycle."

Persuasive: "Convince your friend to join a club or activity you love."

Descriptive: "Describe your favorite place in nature."

Students should choose one prompt and write a short passage in the assigned style.
Evaluation: • Distribute the worksheets (see attached) to students.

(15 minutes) • Instruct them to read the passage and state what the writing style is and
give an explanation for their answer.

Explain your choice by highlighting specific phrases or sentences that exemplify the
chosen style.

Passage 1:

"The wind whispered through the tall, swaying grass as the sun dipped below
the horizon. The old oak tree stood as a silent sentinel, casting long shadows across the
peaceful meadow. Nature's beauty surrounded me, and in that tranquil moment, I felt at
one with the world."

Writing Style: Descriptive

Explanation: The passage is filled with vivid sensory details that paint a picture
of the scene, emphasizing the sensory experience and the setting.

Passage 2:

"In the heart of the bustling city, skyscrapers stretched toward the heavens, and
the streets teemed with people in a hurry. The constant hum of traffic and the glow of
neon lights created an atmosphere of non-stop activity. It was a place where time never
seemed to stand still."
