What is a Compound Adjective?

Compound adjectives are formed by combining two or more words to

create a single descriptive term that modifies a noun.

These adjectives can be hyphenated or written as a single word,

depending on the context and style guide.

Compound adjectives play a crucial role in providing specificity and

clarity in writing, particularly when describing complex concepts or
characteristics.

They are formed by joining two or more words together to

modify a noun, thereby conveying specific qualities or attributes.
Whether hyphenated or merged into a single word, compound
adjectives add depth and clarity to written and spoken

4
communication.

Types of Compound Adjectives

Open compound adjectives, also known as spaced compound

adjectives, are formed by combining two or more words without
hyphens or spaces. In these constructions, the words are placed
adjacently to modify a noun, and they function as a single unit of
meaning.
Open compound adjectives are common in English and often
provide specific descriptions.
Examples: Blue eyed: He had piercing blue eyes that seemed to
see through everything.
High speed: The car raced down the highway at high speed.
First class: She enjoyed a luxurious first-class experience on the
flight.
Red hot: The metal glowed red hot in the forge.
Hardworking students: The hardworking students always
excelled in their academics.

construction projects.
Deep fried: The restaurant served delicious deep-fried chicken
wings.
Bright yellow: The bright yellow sunflowers added a cheerful
touch to the garden.
Light blue: She painted her room a soothing light blue color.
Open compound adjectives offer a simple and straightforward
way to convey descriptions in writing, and they are widely used
in everyday language. While they lack hyphens or spaces
between the component words, their meaning is still clear and
easily understood in context.

Closed Compound Adjectives

Closed compound adjectives, also known as solid compound
adjectives, are formed by combining two or more words without
spaces, and without hyphens. These adjectives function as a
single unit to modify a noun, providing specific descriptions.
Closed compound adjectives are common in English and are

5
often used to convey precise meanings. Here are some examples:

Hardworking: She admired her hardworking colleague who

never shied away from challenges.
Lighthearted: The lighthearted comedy provided a welcome
break from the stress of daily life.
Warmhearted: The warmhearted gesture touched everyone at the
event.
Openminded: Being openminded allows for new perspectives
and ideas to flourish.
Clearcut: The clearcut instructions made the task easy to
understand.
Outstanding: The outstanding performance received a standing
ovation from the audience.

Closed compound adjectives offer a concise and efficient way to

convey descriptions in writing, and they are commonly used in
both formal and informal contexts.

Despite lacking spaces between the component words, their

meaning remains clear and easily understood within the context
of the sentence.
Hyphenated Compound Adjectives
Hyphenated compound adjectives, as the name suggests, are
formed by joining two or more words with hyphens. These
adjectives function as a single unit to modify a noun, providing
specific descriptions. Hyphenated compound adjectives are
commonly used in English to prevent confusion or ambiguity
and to create clarity in expression. Here are some examples:

High-risk: The high-risk investment yielded significant returns.
