INTRODUCTION
The door etiquette is the etiquette of letting someone else go first is typically taught from
a very young age. Whether or not you follow this rule, you sure recognize what it feels like when
others choose not to observe it. (Candace Smith, 2023). The experiment that we will be
observing is the interaction between students at the doorway. This observation will be
happening at the main library of Southwestern University PHINMA with different doorways. 3
doors will be observed located at the 2nd floor, 3rd floor and the nap room inside the library. We
will start our observation around 8am to 10am and 3pm to 5pm to consider the peak hours of
the library. Not just by observing, we as the researchers will also manipulate the door etiquette
to see if there is any difference that we may encounter during our time of the experiment.

This test isn't about who's the strongest or fastest at opening doors. It's about something
much deeper: courtesy. By simply observing how students interact at doorways, we can gain
valuable insights into their sense of respect, helpfulness, and how they navigate social norms
within the school environment. The independent variable in our experiment is the holding of the
door while the dependent variable is the attitude towards the courtesy being presented. To
measure the outcome of the experiment, we will record the process and also observe the
interaction between the person who holds the door and the person who walks through the door.
We will also have additional data to observe such as gender, age, time of day and the degree of
study.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this research is to examine the extent to which students and faculty
members demonstrate courtesy in holding doors for others within school environments. This
may involve assessing factors such as frequency of door-holding behavior, attitudes towards
courtesy, and potential correlations with school culture. To understand the interactions that
happened during this short period of time and how this will affect them.

HYPOTHESIS
Ha: There is a significant difference in the attitudes towards courtesy of door-holding behavior
among students and faculty members within school environments.

Ho: There is no significant difference in the attitudes towards courtesy of door-holding behavior
among students and faculty members within school environments.

PROCEDURE
The primary objective of this study is to systematically examine and analyze the prevalence
and determinants of doorway courtesy among students in various school settings. By
conducting rigorous observations and data collection, we aim to gain insights into the factors
that influence door-holding behavior and its implications for social dynamics within educational
environments.

Materials Needed:
1. Observation checklist or data recording sheet: A structured tool for documenting instances
of doorway courtesy, including variables such as location, time, number of people passing
through, and door-holding behavior.
2. Stopwatch or timer: To accurately measure the duration of observation periods and record
timestamps for each observed event.
3. Pen/pencil: For recording data on the observation checklist or data recording sheet.
4. Notebook or data collection device: To organize and store observational data securely for
later analysis.
5. Consent forms: If required by school policies or ethical guidelines, obtain informed consent
from participants or stakeholders involved in the study.
6. Permission from school administration: Ensure necessary approvals are obtained from
school authorities to conduct observations and data collection on school premises.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATION

We researchers must maintain anonymity as we should not record names or identify

specific students for their privacy and the data should be used for analysis only and not shared
in a way that identifies individuals. We must also avoid deceiving the participants and if used,
we must debrief the participants after the experiment has been completed. This ethical
consideration is important to minimize the harm that the participants may receive.
