RATIONALE
By participating in this unit students will be able to understand the basics of soccer. This
can benefit them by not only becoming acquainted with the sport but also by attributing to
skills that can be translated into daily life. some of these skills include the importance of
safety when participating in a sport, spatial awareness, teamwork, as well as coordination
and strength that comes from appropriately manipulating a ball. Skills that relate to
strength and coordination can help with day to day occurrences like posture, health, and
endurance. Coordination with teammates can further allow students to practice and
recognize the importance of respecting one another and recognize the strength that comes
from working together. Soccer is also a very popular yet accessible sport. Students can
take what they learn and apply soccer playing to virtually any outdoor space.

LESSON 1
Main Objective: Safety/ Classroom Expectations
Safety/ Teamwork

Purpose/ Description:
Establishing classroom management and expectations for students.Students will know the boundaries set in
place for their new unit as well as put these expectations to the test by playing a round of red light green light
but with soccer balls.

LESSON 2
Main Objective: Cool Down Warm Up
Purpose/ Description:
Students will learn the warm up and cool down procedure that will be used briefly in each class. A regular class
will consist of a warm up activity followed by brief stretching and instructions and a light jogging lap at the end.

LESSON 3
Main Objective: Spatial Awareness

Purpose/ Description:
Spatial awareness is important for students as they learn soccer. Knowing where opponents and teammates are
is crucial for playing the game. It is also important that student remain aware of their ball to help establish
control and to reduce avoidable accidents such as collisions when running more complex drills.

LESSON 4
Main Objective: Retaining Objects
Purpose/ Description:
Retaining the ball or dribbling is important for students to understand as to be an efficient soccer player they
must first learn how to control their ball. Students will participate in discussion and activities that are geared
towards helping them strengthen their dribbling and control of the ball while moving.

Activities
Warm up activity followed by stretching and introduction (teach what
dribbling is and looks like)

LESSON 5
Main Objective: Sending Objects and Receiving Objects (potential for
two classes)
Purpose/ Description:
Students will learn how the basics of how to shoot and receive a ball. First they will begin by simply passing the
ball to a partner. They will then put their abilities to the test and practice their skills. In a game of capture the
pin students will practice their accuracy and try to knock over bowling pins.

Activities
Warm up activity followed by stretching. Introduction (talk about shooting
and receiving the ball) Make sure to mention passing with the insides of our feet and teach them
about trapping.

LESSON 6
Main Objective: Working on Previous Skills
Purpose/ Description:
To give students an idea of how to put their skills to the test we will play a game of soccer noodle tag. Students
are encouraged to use the skills we have learned thus far. For the last bit of class students will be involved in a
discussion about the game of soccer as well as how to shoot on a net. This is in preparationg for next class when
students are going to be evaluated.

LESSON 7 & 8
Main Objective: Evaluation
Potential for 2 classes
Purpose/ Description:
To assess students in their shooting, passing, and dribbling abilities students will play a game of soccer. In shifts
students conduct a game of soccer.

Activities
Warm up activity followed by stretching. Introduction review of what we
have learned so far and the basic rules of soccer.

1.) Students will play 5v5 games lasting 3 minutes.
