CHLORINE PROPERTIES AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Environmental Hazards of
Chlorine
• Chlorine is not a naturally occurring chemical
• Mixing with water may form hydrochloric acid
• Causes bleached spots on leafy plants;
usually does not kill the plant but yield may
be affected
• Inhalation effects on animals are similar to
humans (dead animals may indicate chlorine)
• Water solubility is 6.93 lbs/100 gal of water;
concentrations below 0.1 ppm adversely
affects fragile aquatic life
• DOT lists chlorine as marine pollutant
Occidental Petroleum Qatar, Ltd.
First Aid Measures
• Inhalation
• Skin Contact
• Eye Contact
27
First Aid Measures
Inhalation
• 30 ppm shortness of breath, chest pain, possible
vomiting
• 40 - 60 ppm severe irritation of lungs, fluid
collecting
• Prolonged exposure above 50 ppm:
unconsciousness & death
• 100 ppm may cause lethal dose
• Average Lethal Dose: 300 - 400 ppm for 30
minutes
28
First Aid Measures
Inhalation
• Rescuers wear an SCBA and have protective clothing
• Remove victim to fresh air without delay
• For minimal exposure (with minor burning of nose, throat,
eyes, respiratory track and cough) - no specific treatment
other than removal from chlorine atmosphere
• Victims normally will be symptom free within an hour or less
• Due to possible delayed pulmonary effect, they should receive
medical attention and be observed for several days
29
First Aid Measures
Skin Contact
• Liquid Contact
- Liquid will boil to gas drawing heat from skin
and generating a gaseous exposure
- Treat area for frostbite and chemical exposure
with a continuous stream of tepid water for 20
minutes
• Remove contaminated clothing
• If irritation persists after irrigation, or if skin is
broken or blistered, get medical attention promptly
30
First Aid Measures
Skin Contact
• Gaseous Contact
- Itching will develop as acid is formed on the
skin
- Do NOT use ointments without medical
direction
31
First Aid Measures
Eye Contact
• Acids produced in eyes can cause blindness
• Flush eyes with tepid running water for 15 - 20
minutes holding eyes open
• Do not transport victim until flushing has
completed
• Lift the lower and upper lids
• Get medical attention immediately. Victim should be
examined by an ophthalmologist. Contact lenses
should not be worn when working with chlorine
32
First Aid Measures
• Immediately remove the victim from further
exposure. Designated rescuers must wear
properly fitting, positive pressure self-
contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and
other required safety equipment appropriate to
the work site.
• If the worker is not breathing, apply cardio-
pulmonary resuscitation in the nearest safe
area.
• Remove contaminated clothing but keep the
individual warm. conscious provide oxygen
immediately
