What Is It
Musical Plays

Musical plays has had a long storied history; the style dates all the way back to the
ancient Greek theatre back in the 5th century BCE.The musical play is a popular generally
lighter form of musical drama than the opera. The themes are usually more contemporary
and the musical melodies are more manageable by the average singer. The acting is less
intense and dramatic and the choreography and dance sequences provide entertaining
breaks in the unfolding plots. From the 20th to the 21st century, Broadway plays of New York
and West End productions of London kept musical plays alive. Most of the musicals are
originally written and composed but some are adaptations of classical operas like Miss
Saigon and Aida where Lea Salonga starred. Since it is impossible to make these musicals
known through live performances alone, film adaptations have been made.

In the Philippines, the musical play is a more recent development than on Broadway
and the West End. Unlike its western counterpart, Philippine Musical plays rely mostly on
adaptations of novels, literary works or biographical sketches of famous artists.

Broadway and West End Musicals

Broadway musicals have themes that are generally light and easy to
understand. These may include love and romance, social
acceptance, jealousy
and intrigue and
adventure. The singing
is usually amplified,
unlike the operatic
quality of classically
trained voices. As a
result, many songs
from Broadway have
https://tinyurl.com/y59soo55 become popular hits.
Among these are “Climb Every Mountain” from the https://tinyurl.com/y3p2z6vf
Sound of Music, “I Could Have Danced
All Night” from My Fair Lady, “Some Enchanted Evening” from South Pacific and “Sun and
Moon” from Miss Saigon. The first major Broadway musical was Showboat in 1927. Since
then, other hit productions were staged through the years including:

A. Miss Saigon
Miss Saigon is a musical by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain
Boublil, with lyrics by Richard Maltby Jr. it is a modern adaptation of
Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, which also tells the tragic tale of a
doomed romance involving an Asian Woman who is abandoned by her
Caucasian lover. The setting of the plot is relocated to 1970s’ Saigon
during the Vietnam War, with Madame Butterfly’s love story between an

between and American soldier and a Vietnamese bar girl. Miss Saigon first opened at West
End in1989 and closed in 1994 making it one of Theatre Royal’s longest-running musicals.
The USA production opened at the Broadway Theatre in New York on April 11, 1991 and
closed on January 2001 after 4, 092
performances. Then, it was again re-staged in
London in 2014.

B. The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is a Broadway musical by Andrew Lloyd

by Lloyd Webber. It is based on the novel The Phantom of the
Opera by Gaston Leroux.

The story focuses on a beautiful singer Christine Daae as she is

seduced by a mysterious disfigured musical genius known as the
Phantom of the opera. The Phantom lives beneath the Paris Opera
House and terrorizes those who work there. He demands that
Christine be the star
of the theater’s
productions. When

escapes with Raoul to the roof, where she tells
him about her underground meetings with the
Phantom. Raoul is skeptical but swears to love
and protect her always, as demonstrated in https://tinyurl.com/y54

The Phantom of the Opera is one of the longest-running Broadway musicals of all
time. At the 1988 Tony Awards, the Broadway Production won seven awards including the

Philippine Musical Plays

(Biographical Sketches of Famous Artists)

A. Andres Bonifacio, Ang Dakilang Anak-Pawis: The Musical

The musical play Andres Bonifacio: Ang Dakilang

Anak-Pawis is a five-act work commissioned by
Alfonso Puyat in 1979, depicting the life of
revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio. It was co-
produced by CCP and the Andres Bonifacio Music
Foundation, Inc., and was staged sgain at the
CCP Main Theater on August 20 and 21, 1994
with Jerry Dadap as composer-conductor and the
late Elmo Makil as Bonifacio.

https://tinyurl.com/y4u9hcry

The Hero behind the Musical

Andres Bonifacio was born on November 30, 1863 in Tondo, Manila to Santiago Bonifacio
and Catalina de Castro. As the eldest of the six children, Andres was forced to give up his
plans for higher education to support his younger siblings due to the early demise of both
parents. He worked as a broker for J.M Fleming and Company and later worked as a grocer
for Fressell and Company. Bonifacio’s tragic childhood seemed to have extended to his
adulthood. His first wife, Monica, died at a young age of leprosy. His son by his second wife,
Gregoria de Jesus, died as an infant.

In 1892, Bonifacio joined Jose Rizal’s La Liga Filipina at the same time founded
Kataastaasang Kagalanggalangan Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK). The new
organization, consisting of people from the lower and middle income groups was formed to
mount an armed resistance against the Spanish colonizers. It generated wide support from
several provinces that also established their respective regional branches. Bonifacio became

8
the Presidente Supremo of the Katipunan in 1895. Along with this development, he and his
friends Emilio Jaconto and Pio Valenzuela put up a newspaper called Kalayaan.

In the summer of 1896, following the execution of Rizal, Bonifacio and his followers tore up
their cedulas as a symbol of defiance against the government. Bonifacio proclaimed himself
President of the Revolutionary Government and declared independence on August 23, 1896.
He issued a manifesto shortly thereafter for an attack on Manila. This ignited simultaneous
revolts in other places that included San Juan Del Monte, Marikina, Montalban, San Mateo
and Cavite. During the series of clashes where Bonifaco had mixed results of success and
failure, a young upper-class politician from Kawit, Cavite named Emilio Aguinaldo surfaced.
Much of the military successes were attributed to him because of his education and wealth.
So in the Tejeros Convention of 1897, Aguinaldo was elected President of the Revolutionary
Government. Bonifacio refused to recognize the new government. Eventually, he was tried
for treason and sedition which caused him to be shot to death, together with his brother
Procopio, on May 10, 1897. He was 34 years old when he died.

B. Atang: Dulang May Musika

Atang: Dulang May Musika is a musical based on

the life of the first superstar of the Philippines, Atang
de la Rama. It was written by Floy Quintos, directed
by Alexander Cortes and with the music by Von de
Guzman. It was shown at Guerrero Theater of the
University of the Philippines Diliman in 2008 as part
of the Zarzuela Festival organized by the UP College
of Arts and Letters.

Biography of Atang de la Rama

Honorata de la Rama-Hernandez was more
popularly known as Atang de la Rama. She was a
singer, bodabil performer and the first Filipina
actress. She was born in Tondo, Manila on January
11, 1991. At the age of seven, she was already
performing in a number of Spanish zarzuelas
https://tinyurl.com/y25qqb7n
including Mascota and Marina.

During the American occupation, Atang almost singlehandedly tried to promote the
kundiman and the Filipino Zarzuela. She produced the plays Anak ni Eva and Bulaklak ng
Kabundukan that earned her the label as “Queen of the Kundiman and Zarzuela” in 1979.
Her stints in major theaters in Manila became opportunities for her to propagate the
kundiman and zarzuela. In 1987, Atang was proclaimed National Artist for Theater and
Music for her dedication and propagation of original Filipino theater and music. She was
married to National Artist of Literature, Amado V. Hernandez.

The Musical Production

In the UP production of the musical, the songs rendered by
Ms. Laurel as Atang included Nasaan ka Irog, Pakiusap,
Madaling Araw, Nabasag and Banga and Masayang Dalaga.
She also sung duets with her husband such as Kitang Dalawa
and Pilipinas Kong Mahal. But what elicited enthusiastic
audience response were the duets with Katy de la Cruz,
Magkano and Bibingka Mo? and Mamang Gusting. The Play
also featured the two men in Atang’s life- General Artemio
Ricarte and her husband.

C. Katy! The Musical
The musical Katy! is about the life of
bodabil star, Katy de la Cruz. It was initially
presented by Actors Studio East Production
in 1988. The play featured music by Ryan
Cayabyab and lyrics by Jose Javier Reyes.
It starred Mitch Valdes in the title role.

Biography of Katy de la Cruz

Catalina de la Cruz was born in Bustos,
Bulacan on February 13, 1907 and died on
November 10, 2004. Popularly known as
https://tinyurl.com/y6e5j9fw Katy de la Cruz, she was hailed as the
“Queen of Filipino Jazz” and “Queen of
Bodabil”. Katy’s formal schooling ended when she was just in third grade. In its place, she
became active in show business. She started at the age of seven when she was hired by a
Manila film theater to sing to the movie audiences in between movie screenings. Those
routines would later evolve into bodabil where Katy would learn her songs by listening to
phonograph records and the English language from her brother. As a rising star, she had the
opportunity to perform alongside Atang de la Rama. Soon, she became the main performer
in Manila’s largest theaters.

Katy became associated with the jazz genre when it became nationally popular in the 1920s.
Her signature piece was the “St. Louis Blues”. At the same time, she was able to master scat
singing. In 1930s, she became identified with the song “Balut” inspired by the local duck egg
delicacy. She would also appear in films and received the FAMAS Best Supporting Actress
for her role in the film Inspirasyon. She also went to international tours where she performed
in San Francisco, Las Vegas, concert halls of Thailand, Taiwan, Australia, Singapore and
Hawaii. Of her four children, two followed her career path. Katy died at the age of 97.

The Musical Production

The opening scene starts with a visit by Katy, already in her old age, to the theater where
she used to perform during her glorious past. Katy reminisces her past. The musical then
unfolds as a retrospect of her performances. Some of the songs in the musical are Minsan
ang Minahal ay Ako; Saging; and Tingnan Mo nga Naman. In January 2013, a revival of the
musical was held at CCP Main Theater, co-produced with the Spotlight Artists Centre. It was

Blando for choreography.
https://tinyurl.com/y4qteac5 The Tale behind the Musical

scheming cousin Adolfo. Aladin, a weak Muslim prince from Persia has also been banished
by his father, the Sultan Ali-Adab, for deserting his troops in battle.

Met with unpleasant circumstances because of greed, jealousy and love, still, the four “ill-
starred” lovers meet in the jungle in a joyful reunion amidst their respective freedoms. They
all travel to Albania where Aladin and Flerida are converted to Christianity. Florante marries
Laura, and Aladin marries Flerida in a jubilant double wedding. The reunited couple reigns

The Myth behind the Musical

This myth on the origin of Mount Mayon is centered on https://tinyurl.com/y2vp8vmd
an immortal tale of love between Ulap and Magayon. As
they are about to reunite, Magayon is unfortunately
struck by a stray arrow and Ulap, as he held Magayon in
his arms is fatally stabbed in the back. The two lovers
are laid to rest. The mound of earth under which they are
buried grows bigger with the passage of time.
Eventually, the mound rises up to become kown as “the
volcano with a perfect cone”, named Mayon.

Restaging of Daragang Magayon

The restaging of the original musical play was held at the CCP Main Theater on February 8,
2013, followed by a performance in Albay entitled Daragang Magayon: An Istorya ni Mayon.
This musical revival was a production of E-Dance Theater. It included film animation and
some dance revisions to meet the choreographic demands of the new production directed by
Katrina Santos Mercado. It was also highlighted by the involvement of National Artist for
Literature and Albay poet laureate Virgilio Almario, Abdon Balde for dramaturgy and Gerald
Mercado for choreography. The music of Ramon was retained. The composer conducted an
ensemble consisting of the UP Rondalla, Novo Concertante Manila Choir and singers
Stefanie Diclas Quintin (soprano), Agrifino Jonaf del Fierro (bass) and Jay-El Viteno (tenor).

C. Noli Me Tangere, The Musical

In 1996, Noli Me Tangere returned to CCP, but this time as a
musical play composed by Ryan Cayabyab with libretto by
National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera. It was staged at the
CCP Little Theater from February 1 to 4, 1996 as a
production of Tanghalang Pilipino. The creative team
included Edna Vida as choreographer, National Artist
Salvador Bernal as set and costume designer, Masaaki Sano
as lighting designer, Gerry Fernandez as associate lighting
designer and Nonon Padilla as stage director.

https://tinyurl.com/y2t9hbez 12
This musical play closely follows the storyline
of the original novel and the opera. There are
slight differences in the partitioning of the story
into different acts and in the dramatization of
the ending as well as in the music libretto.

The musical play has a more contemporary

approach in the musical and compositions
owing to Caybayab’s chromatic and
rhythmically innovative style, as compared with https://tinyurl.com/y4n6beoz
De Leon’s highly tonal and more lyrical
character. Slected songs in the musical include Sa Muling Pagkikita, Dalawang Liham,
Tatlong Sulok ng Pag-ibig, Ang Mga Sawimpalad, Ang Multo sa Lawa, Ang Totoo ay Totoo
and Sa Bagtasan ng mga Landas. Noli Me Tangere, the musical play had its rerun in 2011-
2012 during the 150th anniversary of Rizal’s birth as part of the Tanghalang Filipino silver
anniversary celebration and again in 2013 at the CCP Little Theater. Audie Gemora directed
a young cast composed of mainstream actors which include Mark Bautista and Gain
Magdangal alternating as Crisostomo Ibarra and Cris Villonco as Maria Clara.

D. El Filibusterismo, The Musical

El Filibusterismo also returned as a two-act

musical play that was taged at the CCP Main
Theater from August 8 to 10, 1997 as a
production of Tanghalang Pilipino. The creative
team was composed of Ryan Cayabyab for
music, Jovy Mirroy for the libretto, Edna Vida
for the choreography, National Artist Salvador
Bernal for the set and costume design and
Nonon Padilla for stage direction.

E. Magsimula Ka, The Musical

The musical Magsimula Ka by Gines Tan was

staged at the CCP Main Theater from April 7 to
24, 1988. As the winner of the CCP Playwriting
Contest in 1983, it became one of the longest-
running musicals at the CCP. It later underwent a
series of revivals in the ensuing years during
which time some of its initial lead performers
eventually became stars in their own right.

Magsimula Ka is the story of young dreamers

whose ambitions begin to fade amidst life’s
realties. The play responds to thr young people’s
lingering question of whether there is hope for
them in this cruel world. A major factor in realizing
this hope is to start and uphold one’s talent or
amibition despite all odds. This is evident when
they meet a disabled girl whom they befriended
and teach how to overcome her physical and

https://tinyurl.com/y3ab5lg2 13
psychological suffering; when the beer garden hostesses where Mandy sings take pride in
themselves; when Miguel’s other finds fulfillment in her son’s eventual success or when
Miguel’s younger sister plays a crucial role in his reconciliation with their father. The climactic
song Magsimula Ka is a fitting theme for the musical and its contestants in search of fame
and fortune as the three main characters- Miguel, Mandy and Mario- joined a national pop
song competition “Philippop” and reach the final stage.

The song had earlier won Song of the Year award in the First Cecil Awards of 1982, Grand
Prize award in the First ASEAN Song Festival in 1981 and the Third Prize award in the 4th
Metro Manila Popular Music Festival in 1981.

The 1988 Production and 2010 Revival

The original cast was a combination of veteran singers and new talents. The composer/
musical director was Gines Tan, while the musical arranger was Ryan Cayabyab,
choreography was Edna Vida, set design by Fredie Jingco, light design by Monino Duque,
sound design by Mylo Samiento and costume coordination by Edgar Alegre. Direction was
by Nestor U. Torre.

In 2010, a revival of the musical was held at the Music Museum with one of the original
stars, Isay Alvarez and her husband Robert Sena as producer and director, respectively.
The scene starts with the the Philippop scene and then turns back the clock to the
graduation ceremony of the four friends- Miguel, Mandy, Mario and Monina.

What I Have Learned
From the musicals presented above, we can see desperation, love, war, greed, ambition and
many others. To end our lesson on a good note, read the poem entitled “Desiderata” written
by Max Ehrmann which tells us to strive for high ideals. Read and reflect on what the poem
has to say.
DESIDERATA
Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may
be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull
and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare with others, you may become
vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons that yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own
career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But
let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high
ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not
feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and
disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield
you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many
fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be
gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and
the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no
doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in
the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham,
drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
