What Is It
Musical Plays
Musical plays has had a long storied history; the style dates all the way back to the
ancient Greek theatre back in the 5th century BCE.The musical play is a popular generally
lighter form of musical drama than the opera. The themes are usually more contemporary
and the musical melodies are more manageable by the average singer. The acting is less
intense and dramatic and the choreography and dance sequences provide entertaining
breaks in the unfolding plots. From the 20th to the 21st century, Broadway plays of New York
and West End productions of London kept musical plays alive. Most of the musicals are
originally written and composed but some are adaptations of classical operas like Miss
Saigon and Aida where Lea Salonga starred. Since it is impossible to make these musicals
known through live performances alone, film adaptations have been made.
In the Philippines, the musical play is a more recent development than on Broadway
and the West End. Unlike its western counterpart, Philippine Musical plays rely mostly on
adaptations of novels, literary works or biographical sketches of famous artists.

In 1892, Bonifacio joined Jose Rizal’s La Liga Filipina at the same time founded
Kataastaasang Kagalanggalangan Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK). The new
organization, consisting of people from the lower and middle income groups was formed to
mount an armed resistance against the Spanish colonizers. It generated wide support from
several provinces that also established their respective regional branches. Bonifacio became
8
the Presidente Supremo of the Katipunan in 1895. Along with this development, he and his
friends Emilio Jaconto and Pio Valenzuela put up a newspaper called Kalayaan.
In the summer of 1896, following the execution of Rizal, Bonifacio and his followers tore up
their cedulas as a symbol of defiance against the government. Bonifacio proclaimed himself
President of the Revolutionary Government and declared independence on August 23, 1896.
He issued a manifesto shortly thereafter for an attack on Manila. This ignited simultaneous
revolts in other places that included San Juan Del Monte, Marikina, Montalban, San Mateo
and Cavite. During the series of clashes where Bonifaco had mixed results of success and
failure, a young upper-class politician from Kawit, Cavite named Emilio Aguinaldo surfaced.
Much of the military successes were attributed to him because of his education and wealth.
So in the Tejeros Convention of 1897, Aguinaldo was elected President of the Revolutionary
Government. Bonifacio refused to recognize the new government. Eventually, he was tried
for treason and sedition which caused him to be shot to death, together with his brother
Procopio, on May 10, 1897. He was 34 years old when he died.
During the American occupation, Atang almost singlehandedly tried to promote the
kundiman and the Filipino Zarzuela. She produced the plays Anak ni Eva and Bulaklak ng
Kabundukan that earned her the label as “Queen of the Kundiman and Zarzuela” in 1979.
Her stints in major theaters in Manila became opportunities for her to propagate the
kundiman and zarzuela. In 1987, Atang was proclaimed National Artist for Theater and
Music for her dedication and propagation of original Filipino theater and music. She was
married to National Artist of Literature, Amado V. Hernandez.

C. Katy! The Musical
The musical Katy! is about the life of
bodabil star, Katy de la Cruz. It was initially
presented by Actors Studio East Production
in 1988. The play featured music by Ryan
Cayabyab and lyrics by Jose Javier Reyes.
It starred Mitch Valdes in the title role.
Katy became associated with the jazz genre when it became nationally popular in the 1920s.
Her signature piece was the “St. Louis Blues”. At the same time, she was able to master scat
singing. In 1930s, she became identified with the song “Balut” inspired by the local duck egg
delicacy. She would also appear in films and received the FAMAS Best Supporting Actress
for her role in the film Inspirasyon. She also went to international tours where she performed
in San Francisco, Las Vegas, concert halls of Thailand, Taiwan, Australia, Singapore and
Hawaii. Of her four children, two followed her career path. Katy died at the age of 97.

psychological suffering; when the beer garden hostesses where Mandy sings take pride in
themselves; when Miguel’s other finds fulfillment in her son’s eventual success or when
Miguel’s younger sister plays a crucial role in his reconciliation with their father. The climactic
song Magsimula Ka is a fitting theme for the musical and its contestants in search of fame
and fortune as the three main characters- Miguel, Mandy and Mario- joined a national pop
song competition “Philippop” and reach the final stage.
The song had earlier won Song of the Year award in the First Cecil Awards of 1982, Grand
Prize award in the First ASEAN Song Festival in 1981 and the Third Prize award in the 4th
Metro Manila Popular Music Festival in 1981.
In 2010, a revival of the musical was held at the Music Museum with one of the original
stars, Isay Alvarez and her husband Robert Sena as producer and director, respectively.
The scene starts with the the Philippop scene and then turns back the clock to the
graduation ceremony of the four friends- Miguel, Mandy, Mario and Monina.

What I Have Learned
From the musicals presented above, we can see desperation, love, war, greed, ambition and
many others. To end our lesson on a good note, read the poem entitled “Desiderata” written
by Max Ehrmann which tells us to strive for high ideals. Read and reflect on what the poem
has to say.
DESIDERATA
Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may
be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull
and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare with others, you may become
vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons that yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own
career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But
let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high
ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not
feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and
disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield
you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many
fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be
gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and
the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no
doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in
the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham,
drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
