DISTANCE LEARNING
A recent study at a university compared the differences between distance and traditional learning. Students participated in
both learning methods and clearly preferred distance learning courses to the traditional learning environment. The following list
summarises the main findings of this research:
Students reported:
Distance learning, or home study, means that you study from home without having to attend classes. You study in your free
time at your own pace, so you are in full control of your progress. Distance learning is fast becoming one of the most popular
ways to study. It gives you the option of keeping up a full-time job while furthering your studies, whilst at the same time
offering you a wide variety of different courses which makes it easy for you to follow your dreams!
Although the exact services you’ll be receiving would depend on the unique training institution, there are certain things that
ALWAYS stay the same when it comes to distance learning.
They are:
• The majority of your study material will be sent to you via postal services.
• You study on your own time wherever it suits you, so you have the freedom to study whenever you have time to do so.
• You don’t have to attend any classes, so you don’t have to worry about travelling.
• Appointment for examinations can be made at any time during the twelve month period.
Distance learning is a great way to further your education. It is convenient and you don’t have to put your current affairs on
hold. You can still do the things you are doing – like go to work – and simply study when you have free time on your hands.
Distance Learning is a very smart way to study. This is especially popular amongst people who still want to work and don’t
have time to sit in a classroom all day.
• You can have a normal 9 – 5 job and study in your free time.
• You don’t have to spend any money on travelling to and from the venue.
• You can also reach the Correspondence Manager telephonically when you have any study related questions.
• There are no surprises with unannounced tests.
• You don’t have to sit through classes all day.
• You only travel once to our Office to write examination.
• You can study where and whenever you want to.

When you compare qualifications through distance learning programmes with that of traditional learning, which is more valuable and
respected?
Both traditional and distance learning programs provide quality education, with the main difference between them being the delivery method of
the content. Often correspondence learning students have the same access to the respected training institution and course materials as
students who are attending classes.
Learning depends on the individual's motivation to learn, so it still comes down to the effort that the students put into their education that
ultimately determines their success.
How do Distance Learning students cope without face-to-face contact with lecturers and classmates?
Students who attend distance learning institutions are encouraged to learn how to do research and grow independently. It seems as if
students who attend classes rely heavily on the instructor to “feed” them the required material and they do not feel the need to reinforce or
supplement lectures with the assigned textbook readings.
A sure way to break out of your comfort zone is to learn new things. This will allow you to focus on something new so that you can broaden
your horizons and apply your mind in a new way. Furthermore, it will open up new opportunities. By adding new skills and qualifications you
stand a chance to grow in your work or make a career change. Sometimes the only way up is to get out. Why not further your education or
learn new skills that allow entrepreneurial possibilities!
