A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics V

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:
a. visualize the ratio of 2 given numbers
b. express ratio using either colon (:) or fraction; and
c. participate actively in class

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Introduction to Ratio

B. Reference 21st Century Mathletes

PP 142 - 147

C. Materials blackboard, student textbook, LCD Screen

III. Procedure Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

A. Preparatory Activities

1. Preliminary Activities

 Prayer
Everybody stand up (A pupil will lead the prayer)

 Greetings
Good morning class!
How’s your day? Good morning Sir!
We’re fine Sir!
 Energizer
Really? Let’s see if you are, to make
you more active and alert, let’s have an
energizer.
(Teacher will play a short video) (Pupils will dance together with their teacher)

 Classroom management
Grade V, take your seat and arrange
your chairs. Then, pick up all the pieces
of papers you’ll see. Thank you Sir!

 Checking of attendance
Is there any absentee for today?

Very good! Nobody is absent today Sir

2. Drill
Class I have some marbles and stones here; all
you have to do is to separate the marbles from the
stones and count all of them. After that we will
group them into two and compare the numbers of
each group.

Okay class let’s do it. (the students will group and count the marbles
and stones)

Okay class, do you know what do we call the

things you have done?

It is what we call ratio and that is our topic for

today.

3. Review
Before we proceed to our new lesson, again Division of decimal numbers sir!
class what is our last lesson?

Let me see if you still remember our past

lesson. Yes, Sir

Are you ready?

(The teacher will post their past activity on the

board)

4. Motivation Yes, Sir!

Class lets watch a short video about ratio
Are you ready?
(The teacher will present a short video)

B. Developmental Activities

1. Presentation

Our lesson for today is about Ratio.

(the student will read the definition of ratio)
A ratio is a comparison of two different things
or numbers. We generally express the two
numbers as a ratio using a colon (:).

Example 1:

Section Girls Boys Total

5-Google 20 13 33
5-Gold 25 15 40
Total 45 28 77
If we want to compare:

The total number of pupils from 5-Google

compare to the total number of pupils from 5-
Gold.
- There are 33 pupils from 5-Google as
compared to the 40 pupils from 5-Gold.
- We write 33:40 (Read: 33 is to 40).
(the pupils will read the answer)
(Again class please read)

The total number of girl pupils from 5-Gold to

the total number of girl pupils from 5-Google.
- There are 25 girl pupils from 5-Gold as
compared to the 20 pupils from 5-Google.
- We write 25:20 (Read: 25 is to 20).

Statement Ratio
5-Google to 5-Gold 33:40
5-Gold girls to 5-google
25:20
girls
Yes, Sir!
(Is it clear class?)

Example 2:

Write the ratios in colon and fraction form (The student will read the statement)
A ratio is also defined as the quotient of the first
quantity divided by the second quantity.
Therefore, a ratio is also a fraction. The first
quantity is placed in the numerator while the
second quantity is placed in the denominator.

Yohan, is one of the best basketball player in

his team, makes an average of 20 points, 5
blocks, 10, rebounds, 15 assists, and 5 steal
per games. Find the ratio of his steal to
rebounds, points to assists, and steals to
blocks. Write the ratios both in colon and in
fraction form.

Statement form Colon Fraction

form form
Steals to rebounds 5:10 5/10
Points to assists 20:15 20/15
Steals to blocks 5:5 5/5
Yes, sir!
Is it clear class?

C. Generalization (the students will read the definition)

Okay class, again how can we define ratio?

Correct!
D. Application (Yes, sir!)

For your activity, class you already have your

own group right? (The students will answer the activity)

Okay class, form a circle with your groupmates

(the teacher will post their activity)

Krissina is a caretaker in a large zoo. Her

morning routine includes feeding the animals.
She feeds the 10 deers, 3 elephants, 4 giraffes,
3 zebras, 9 monkeys, 6 snakes, 4 crocodiles,
and an alligator. Find the ration of elephants to
deers, giraffes to monkeys, snakes to
crocodiles, monkeys to deers, and alligator to
elephants.
Write the ratios both in colon and in fraction
form.

IV. Evaluation

Write each ratio in colon and in fraction form

1). 18 roses to 5 chocolates 6). 13 bottles to 34 cans

2). 21 girls 20 boys 7). 8 ballpens to 16 pencils
3). 12 eggs to 1 chicken 8). 3 bags and 4 baskets
4). 5 apples to 4 oranges 9). 17 kids to 19 adults
