Smart Traffic Lights

1.1 Introduction
Traffic lights, also known as traffic signals, traffic lamps, signal lights, robots are signaling
devices positioned at or near road intersections, pedestrian crossings, and other locations to
control competing flows of traffic. Traffic lights were first installed in 1868 in London,
United Kingdom; now used in almost every city in the world. Traffic lights alternate the right
of way accorded to road users by displaying lights of a standard color (red, yellow/amber, and
green) following a universal color code as shown in fig1.1

(and a precise sequence to enable comprehension by those

who are color blind). The developed system can help to solve
the problem of traffic congestion. The reason depends on
resent of the fixed timing program. So, our target in this paper
is to make this time unfixed according to the size of the traffic
jam, when there is a traffic jam on any road the green light
will give full time to the user of the road. If there is no traffic
jam, the green light does not give full time, but it gives
programmed time. The new timing scheme that figure1.1
was implemented promises an improvement in the current traffic light system and this system
is feasible, affordable, and ready to be implemented especially during peak hours. The system
can sense the presence or absence of vehicles within a certain range by just hoses filled with
air, and by setting the appropriate duration for the traffic signals to react accordingly. By
employing algorithms to provide the appropriate timing for the green signal to illuminate, in
general, the system works adequately, as foreseen in the design process.

1.2 Problem Statement

Traffic congestion is an increasing problem in cities and suburban spend more of their time
commuting to work, school, shopping, and social event as well as dealing with traffic light
jams and accidents. Traffic became heavy in all directions, more to and from cities as well as
between suburban locations. Suburban business locations require huge parking lots because
employees have to drive; there were few buses or trains or trolleys to carry scatter workers to
their workplace. The hope of reduced congestion in suburban had not been realized; long
commutes and traffic jams could be found everywhere. Traffic lights are sometimes
considered problems at intersections. Traffic lights that are poorly located can adversely affect
the safety and the efficiency of a vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic. Improper or
unjustified signals can result in one or more of the following:
• Significant increase in the frequency of some types of collisions
• Increased congestion, air pollution, and fuel consumption.
• Excessive delay.
• Excessive disobedience of the signal indications.
• Increased use of less adequate streets as motorists attempt to avoid the traffic signals.

1.3 Objectives

• Control of traffic lights by the preset control mechanisms.

• It can achieve optimal road traffic control solutions with the help of hoses filled with air
placed on the road for cars to pass over it.
• It maximizes the efficiency of the existing traffic control system both day and night.
• Reduce the vehicle waiting delay on road by removing the traffic congestion.
• It can count the number of vehicles.
• Increased road safety.
• It reduces the travel time in the city.
• It can also reduce the possibility of accidents on road.
• Our system is cost-effective and it can be easily set up.
