1. (10 points) The first few lines of the Christmas song Twelve Days of Christmas: On the first
day of Christmas my true love sent to me, a partridge in a pear tree. On the second day of
Christmas my true love sent to me, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree. On the
third day of Christmas my true love sent to me, three French hens, two turtle doves and a
partridge in a pear tree. And so on. In all, how many gifts were sent by the True Love to his
Lover from the first day to the twelfth day of Christmas? After the gift-giving, which of these
gifts has the highest quantity? By how many?

first day : 1
sixth day: 21
second day : 3
seventh day: 28
third day: 6
eighth day: 36
fourth day: 10
ninth day: 45
fifth day: 15
tenth: 55
eleventh day: 66
twelfth day: 78

We add the totality from the first day to twelfth day which is equivalent to 364 gifts.
Therefore, the total gift given by the true lover is 364 gifts.
How many presents are there altogether?

Partridges: 1 × 12 = 12
Doves: 2 × 11 = 22
Hens 3 × 10 = 30
Calling birds: 4 × 9 = 36
Golden rings: 5 × 8 = 40
Geese: 6 × 7 = 42
Swans: 7 × 6 = 42
Maids: 8 × 5 = 40
Ladies: 9 × 4 = 36
Lords: 10 × 3 = 30
Pipers: 11 × 2 = 22
Drummers: 12 × 1 = 12
Therefore, the Geese and the swans has highest quantity among the gifts given,
that both have the equivalent of 42 quantities each.

2. (5 points) John bought eight old coins from Andrew, Andrew told John, “These eight old
coins look alike. But one is slightly heavier than the others. I will give you these old coins for
free if by using a balance scale, you can determine the heavier one in exactly three wieghings.”
John was so happy to take home the free old coins. How did he do that?

Let ABC vs DEF be your first weighing. If it's balanced, you know the fake is either G or
H, and this may be verified with a single weighing, such as G against A. If the initial weighing
was uneven, weigh AD against BE next. If it's balanced, it suggests either C or F is a fake,
which may be determined with a single weighing. If it moved in the opposite direction of the
previous weighing, the counterfeit coin swapped sides, indicating it's either B or D. In any
case, you only need one more weighing to determine which one it is.

3. (5 points) During the first day of classes, every person at the virtual meeting of thirty-five
people said hello to each of the other people at the meeting exactly once. How many "hellos"
were said at the meeting?

4. (5 points) To improve her handwriting, Pauline practices writing the numbers 1 to 200 in
words. How many times will she have written the word “one” in all?
5. (5 points) Find the difference when the sum of the first 100 positive odd integers is
subtracted from the first 100 positive even integers.

6. (5 points) Find two whole numbers whose product is 1,000,000. Neither of the two numbers
has any zeroes in it.

7. (5 points) Present a challenging problem on the space provided. Then, show your solution
afterwards.
8. (5 points) Kindly discuss briefly what you have significantly learned in this lesson. You may
also ask a question about this topic.

I learnt a lot about problem solving and how to be an effective problem solver. An
excellent problem-solving ability is something that every person should have. Every day, we
face challenges that we must be able to solve on our own.
