KWL grid
A KWL is an effective way to identify to draw on prior learning and fill in learning gaps.
They can be used at the start and end of a lesson or at the start and end of a topic.
Three before me
In order to encourage learners to act as resources for each other, they have to ask three people
for help before they ask the teacher. This develops confidence, resilience and independence.
Emojis
At key points in the lesson, ask learners to draw an appropriate emoji to reflect their thinking
and learning. Mini whiteboards can be used for this or learners can do it in the margin of their
work. This enables the teacher to see where students are secure and where they need support.
This can be used in a sophisticated way when learners identify the strategies they used when
they encountered a difficulty.
Muddy points
Learners identify one or two points that they are unclear about from the previous lesson.
They work with a partner or a group to build their understanding and address misconceptions so
that they become less ‘muddy’.
Traffic lights
Traffic light colours can be used by learners to self-assess.
Learners who are ‘green’ can support students who are ‘amber’. This enables the teacher to
support learners who are ‘red’ and do not understand.
