TASK 2
1. Kindly research and read about Pharmacological
considerations in Intravenous Therapy
Answer the following question briefly.
a. What is intravenous therapy, types of IV solution and the
different complication of IV therapy?
b. As a professional, cite your strategies in preventing and
managing the occurrence of each IV therapy complication

▪ Intravenous therapy is a way to give fluids, medicine,


nutrition, or blood directly into the blood stream through a
vein.

Types of IV solution

0.1% saline (NS)


Sodium or chloride replacement
Used with blood products.

5% Dextrose in water
Replaces deficits of total body water
Not used alone: dilution of electrolytes can occur

Ringer’s Solution
Replaces fluids
Used for burns, bleeding, dehydration

COMPLICATION OF IV THERAPY

AIR EMBOLISM- air enters the vein through the IV tubing

Symptoms:
▪Tachycardia
▪Chest pain
▪Hypotension
▪Decreased LDC
▪Cyanosis

Treatment

▪ Clamp the tubing


▪Turn the patient on their left side & place in Trendelenburg
position
▪Notify the HCP

INFILTRATION- IV fluid leaks into the surrounding tissues,

Symptoms
▪pain
▪swelling
▪coolness
▪ numbness in the site
▪ no blood return

TREATMENT

▪ remove the IV
▪ elevate the extremities
▪apply warm or cool compress
▪ do not rub the area

INFECTION- entry of microorganism into the body via IV

Symptoms
▪ tachycardia
▪ redness
▪ swelling
▪chills & fever
▪ malaise
▪ nausea & vomiting
TREATMENT

▪ remove the IV
▪ obtain cultures
▪ possible antibiotics
▪ administration
