School Library
-a library that is established to support the
curriculum-related research and instructional
reading needs of pupils and teachers and
provides the collections, related equipment and
instructional services of a staff for an
elementary or secondary school.
School Library
A School Libraries are often the first
real contact of children with the
libraries. A school library should aim to
interest and challenge the child in
developing reading school.
School Librarian
The school librarian is responsible in working with
teachers to enrich the program of instruction
through supplementary materials of every
description, provide the necessary materials of
every description, and organize them for efficient
use, teach the students what the materials are and
how they are used.
The Librarian should not be only educationally qualified but also
possess:
• Leadership
• Initiative
• Ability to manage
• Enthusiasm
• Friendliness
• Cooperative attitude
• Mental alertness
• Creativity
• Tact
• Love for books
• Passion for Children and adults as well, and
• Variety to interest
Historical Development of School Libraries
The development of school libraries can be traced to the beginning of the
public library movement in the last half of the nineteenth century in the
United States. Public Libraries served the needs of public school which
were sometimes built in close proximity to a public library. It was in New
York where librarians were first recognized as teachers rather than clerks.
The period after World War II was an era of growth in the development of
school libraries, the development of technology and the application of
technology in education.
John Newberry – is considered the “Father of Children’s
Literature. He was the first to conceive the idea of publishing
books for children.

The modern concept of a school library was introduced in the


Philippines by Lois Osborn. The first school library established
in the Philippines is Pampanga High School.

Three Categories

- Professional : Education & Certified as Librarians by PRC


- Paraprofessional : qualified in special
area of library work

- Nonprofessional : has clerical and/or


secretarial training/ experience to carry
out routine operations
DUTIES OF LIBRARY PERSONNEL

Duties of Professional Librarian:


helps integrate technology in school program;
plans w/ teachers to help students use library
resources & development information literacy skills;
offers staff development. Programs; acquires
materials/ technologies to meet needs, updates self
professionally
Duties of Paraprofessional:

produce materials; repair equipment; assist users locate/ select/


use materials & equipment; plan/ prepare displays; answer simple
reference queries; maintain library records

Duties of Non professional staff:

performs clerical secretarial work (e.g. correspondence,


maintains/updates records & inventories, transacts library operations
(e.g. files invoices, verifies purchases etc.)
Objectives
A school library has the following objectives:

1. It supports all educational programs of the school;


2. It cultivates reading habits in school children;
3. It develops interest to use the library for their overall development;
4. It inculcates the habit of seeking help of additional sources other than
text books;
5. It develops self-learning skills of students;
6. It nurtures good moral values and principles in the children;
7. It keeps the teachers and management informed with the latest
updates in education sector.
Specific to School Library Overall objective
- help students be literate- learn how to
learn : know how knowledge is organized/ how
to find & use information

- prepared for lifelong learning – can


always find information for any task or decision
at hand
Functions
To achieve the above said objectives a school library performs the
following functions-

1. It provides suitable documents;


2. It makes available text books and other additional reading materials;
3. It procures handy documents, illustrated picture books with bold and
large fonts to create the interest of children.
4. It procures latest teaching learning material – CD, audio – visuals etc. to
improve the teaching skills of teachers.
5. It keeps reference books, dictionaries, year books, directories,
encyclopedias, travel books.
Functions
6. It makes available biographies, autobiographies of freedom
fighters and other national and international personalities to
develop respect and love for nation and humanity.

7. It procures magazines like Times Magazines, Readers Digest etc.,


different newspapers, and other light reading material like fiction
books, general knowledge books, poetry books.

8. It provides books of simple meaningful stories of classics,


Panchatantra, animals and birds to give moral values and ethics to
children.
