Day 1
Performs addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers fluently using flexible strategies of
composition and decomposition

Subtract single digit numbers by counting backwards.

Students subtract using counting backwards method.

Introduce concept of backwards using jumping game to jump 1 step backward and so on.
Ask few volunteers for this.
Teacher demo of counting backwards using fingers to explain numbers counted backwards
+ examples
Can use a video on backward counting to revise the concept. Video in reference folder

1. To introduce concept of backward counting, you can draw a number line (1-10)
on the floor.
2. You may invite one student at a time to stand on the number line and instruct him/her to
jump one step forward, two steps backward and so on.
3. You may repeat step 2 with 2-3 students.
4. You can explain that counting backwards can also
be done using fingers and hold up both your hands to explain that each finger represents a
number. 5. You may demonstrate
counting backwards from 10 to 1 using your fingers and encourage students to count along
with you. 6. You may play CRL-Backward
Counting to reinforce the concept of backward counting.

Students practice subtraction using counting backwards method through an activity.

Provide numbered icecream sticks (1-10) 1 set to each group. They have to arrange them
as per the question and count backwards to get the answer. Provide teacher an IMG to
explain this.
teacher to write question on board, students use icecream sticks to count backwards
1. To arrange icecream sticks as per the question and count backwards to get
the answer, you may divide students into groups of 5 and provide one set of numbered
icecream sticks (1-10) to each group.
2. You can write the sum on the board - There are 9 boxes. 3 have worms in
them. How many are ?
3. You can ask students to arrange the icecream sticks in a row and then count
backwards to get an answer.
4. You may refer to IMG to carry out step 3.
5. You may repeat steps 2-3 to solve 1 more sum.

Students practice subtraction using counting backwards method through an activity.

Create CRL to explain counting backwards 1 example as in book

Give practice through CRL for 4 more questions. Write answers in notebook.
1.To practice subtraction using backward counting, play CRL and solve sums one each
slide.
2.You may

Day 2
Performs addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers fluently using flexible
strategies of composition and decomposition

Subtract single digit numbers by crossing out.

Students subtract using crossing out method.

Can use any items to show taking away and find what is left. Teacher to
demonstrate this.

Students practice subtraction using crossing out method through an

activity.
Use CRL to explain cross out pictorially. Can use CRL 2

Students practice subtraction using crossing out method by completing a

worksheet.
Create a worksheet for practice or can use the greyscale pearson worksheet
Day 3
Performs addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers fluently using flexible
strategies of composition and decomposition

Subtract single digit numbers by crossing out.

Students subtract using crossing out method.

Use video CRL to recap this method (Can use CRL-1) + some questions solved
together

Students practice subtraction using crossing out method through an

activity.
As a continuation of the above activity, display questions and provide beads or
counters and students do it independantly.

Students practice subtraction using crossing out method by completing a

worksheet.

Day 4
Performs addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers fluently using flexible
strategies of composition and decomposition

Subtract single digit numbers using the number line.

Students subtract using the number line.

Draw number line and students jump backwards based on the question. Every
student to get a turn doing this or they jump in pairs to save time.

Students practice subtraction using number line method through an

activity.
Ask students to use their ruler as numberline. Display question as CRL. They
use numberline to find answers and write in their notebook.

Students practice subtraction using number line method by completing a

worksheet.

Day 5
Performs addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers fluently
using flexible strategies of composition and decomposition

Solve picture stories using subtraction.

Students solve subtraction word problems.

Introduce word problems using CRL (Can use CRL-10)

Students practice subtraction word problems through an

activity.
Create CRL with questions. Solve 1 together. Then display 4
more questions, students write answer in the notebook. Show
how answer is arrived at through CRL.

Students practice solving word problems by completing a

worksheet.

Day 6
Performs addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers fluently
using flexible strategies of composition and decomposition

Identify and solve addition and subtraction picture problems.

Students solve addition and subtraction word problems.

Introduce a story through a CRL and how to identify key words to

know whether to add or subtract.

Can use a video on addition to revise once before word problems.

video in reference folder

Students practice addition and subtraction word problems

through an activity.
Using a CRL, work on questions a-d from Pg 120 of CB together.

Students practice solving word problems by completing a

worksheet.
Ask students to work on questions e-h from Pg 120 on their own.

Day 7
Performs addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers
fluently using flexible strategies of composition and
decomposition

Identify and solve addition and subtraction picture

problems.

Students solve addition and subtraction word

problems.
Create a story and display as CRL. Solve it together.
Student use counters to solve each problem.

Students practice addition and subtraction word

problems through a creative activity.
Students are given a situation. In groups, they practice to
enact the situation and arrive at the answer.
Students present their drama on the situation given to
them.
