Have you ever seen ads that say, "Learn a foreign language in 6 weeks or your money back!
“From the first day, your pronunciation will be excellent. Just send... "and so an? Of course, it
never quite happens like that. One’s mother language is easier to learn, but it also requires a lot of
practice to be fluent. And think of how much practice that gets! Before the Second World War,
people usually learned a foreign language in order to read the literature of their country.
Now, speaking a foreign language is what most people want. Every year, millions of people
begin to learn one. How do they do it? Some people try it at home with books and records of
tapes; some use radio and television programmes; others use computers and networks; and still
others go to evening classes. If they use the language only 2 or 3 times a week, it will take a long
time, just like learning a foreign language at school. A few people try to learn the language fast by
studying for 6 or more hours a day. It is clearly easier to learn a language in the country where it is
spoken. However, most people cannot afford this, and for many, it is not necessary. They need the
language in order to do their work better. For example, scientists and doctors chiefly need to be
able to read books and reports in a foreign language. Whether the language is learned quickly or
slowly, it is hard work. Machines and good books will help, but they cannot do the student’s work
for him.
17. According to some advertisements, you need to pay your money if you cannot learn a foreign
language in 6 weeks. _______
18. Now, most people try to learn a foreign language in order to do their work better. _______
19. The best way to learn a foreign language is to go to the country where the language is spoken.
_______
20. Learning a foreign language is an easy job for most people. _______
21. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Foreign languages are easy to learn and don't take much time to practice.
B. Learning a foreign language is a challenge that requires a lot of practice to become fluent.
C. Learning a foreign language in six weeks is a new and highly effective method.
D. Foreign languages are only used to communicate at work.

metal filter into a cup containing a quarter as much sweetened condensed milk, then stirred and
poured over ice in a glass.
Coffee was introduced to Vietnam by the French in the late 19th century, but the country
quickly became a big exporter.
At Trung Nguyen Coffee - the Vietnamese equivalent of Starbucks, with a chain of cafés across
the city - the coffee menu stretches to five pages. The varieties of Vietnamese coffee drinks
produced by Trung Nguyen deserve exploration. They come with different bean combinations
and recipes, and nice names such as "Success", "Creation", "Discover" and "Thought". The
“Passiona, another brand of Trung Nguyen has been promoted for women with the promise that
drinking this type of coffee would maintain perfect skin and a life of "passion and success".

Solar power is energy from the Sun, which has been producing energy for billions of years, but
only in recent years this energy is being collected and changed into heat and electricity across the
world.
The energy from the Sun has given power to all living things from human or animals to other
living organisms through photosynthesis. Photosynthesis takes place when plants use the Sun's
energy to make their own food, and then of course, all other living organisms eat the plants or
animals receiving that energy indirectly from the Sun.
However, collecting solar power to create electricity and heat is not easy like this. It requires solar
thermal (heat) collector boxes or solar panels which are very expensive. Moreover, there are a
couple problems with solar power collecting. Firstly, the amount of sunlight will vary depending
on location, time of day, year, and weather conditions. Secondly, the efficient way to collect this
energy is a difficult question which scientists are still working hard on.
In summary, solar power is a useful source of heat and electricity for the world, but there are some
challenges to overcome before it becomes the only source of energy for the world's needs.

The World Wide Web was developed by British physicist and computer scientist Timothy
Berners-Lee as a project within the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in
Geneva, Switzerland. Berners-Lee combined several existing ideas into a single system to make
it easier for physicists to use data on the Internet. Most important, he added multimedia - the
ability to include graphics - to the hyperlink concept found in a previous Internet service known
as gopher. Berners-Lee had begun working with hypertext in the early 1980s. An early
prototype implementation of the Web became operational at CERN in 1989, and the idea
quickly spread to universities in the rest of the world.
Groups at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign researched and extended Web technology. They developed the first

Teachers will guide students in learning how to work together in getting along with each other.
They will help students with group projects both in and out of the classroom.
Volunteer work and working at local businesses will teach students important life skills about the
world they live in. This will help students become an important part of their communities.
Some experts say it will take five years for changes to begin in schools. Some say it will take

atmosphere there. As expected, the air was so great and clear. We felt very excited about this
place. After having lunch at my grandparents' house, we took a short nap and made all

People in Beijing cannot see the sun because the air is full of smog (a mixture of smoke and fog).
The smog is so thick that it blocks the sun all day. People really miss seeing the sun. Beijing's

responsibility." This is really a hit with tourists. One from Mexico said: "It looks like science
fiction. It's kind of cool, but it's also worrying." The air quality in China's cities often becomes bad
in winter. People burn more coal for heating in the winter months. This causes more pollution.
Many workers wore face masks on their way to work. They did not want to breathe the poisonous

The struggle to have eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest was
the origin of International Workers’ Day, which is also referred to as May Day or Labor Day. The
celebration commemorates the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago in 1886, when Chicago police
shoot workers who were striking to establish the eight-hour day. Many workers died in the event.
Historically, the first congress of the Second International, which was an organization of socialist
and labor parties formed in Paris on July 14, 1889, called for international demonstrations on the
1890 anniversary of the Chicago protests. In 1891, the Second International recognized May Day as
an annual event. In 1904, Social Democratic Party organizations and trade unions of all countries
were called on to demonstrate actively on May First to establish eight hours of work a day and to
get workers' rights. Unions of all countries were urged to go on strike on May 1, wherever it is
possible without injury to the workers.
Most countries celebrate International Workers' Day on May 1st, except in the United States and
Canada, where Labor Day is held in September. Millions of working people and their labor
unions, all over the world, organize street demonstrations and street marches. Several countries
celebrate the day with parades, shows and other patriotic and labor-oriented events.

Over the past 600 years, English has grown from a language of few speakers to become the
dominant language of international communication. English as we know it today emerged around
1350, after having incorporated many elements of French that were introduced since the Norman
Invasion of 1066, Until the 1600s, English was, for the most part, spoken only in England and had
not extended even as far as Wales, Scotland, or Ireland. However, during the course of the next
two centuries, English began to spread around the globe as a result of exploration, trade
(including slave trade), colonial and missionary work. Thus, small groups of English speakers
became established and grew in various parts of the world. As these communities proliferated,
English gradually became the primary language of international business, banking, and
diplomacy. Currently, about 80 percent of the information stored on computer systems worldwide

Many parents are concerned that their children will spend time on social networking which
they could be using to do their homework, exercises, or interact with people in the real world.
They may feel that social networking sites are a waste of their children’s time. However, new
research claims that the communication opportunities provided by social networking encourage
young people to explore their interests, develop technical skills, and work on new forms of self-
expression. The three-year study carried out by a University of California research team that
interviewed over 800 teens and conducted over 2000 hours of online observations. It found that
social networking helps teenagers learn the social and technical skills they need to be
knowledgeable citizens in the digital age.
The study concludes that social networking contributes to young people’s extended
friendships and interests. While the majority of teens use social networking sites to “hang out”
with people they already know in real life, some use them to find like- minded people. Those
interested in chess or international politics, for example, can expand their circle with others who
share the same interests and can find information that goes beyond that they have access to at
school. They can also publicize and distribute their music, art work, or writing to online
audiences, and gain visibility and enhance their reputations. Teenagers create new modes of self-
expression and rules for social behavior online. New forms of online media allow them to acquire
technical skills through creating videos, writing blogs or customizing their online profiles. The
researchers said teens usually respect one another’s authority online, and they are often more
motivated to learn one another than from their parents or other adults.
Social networking has become a societal reality. Children and teens commonly use these sites
to interact like adults. With social networking such an important part of youth social culture, it
can be extremely difficult to completely keep teens away from social networks. Instead, it is better
for parents to allow their kids to access the appropriate websites while teaching them to use them
safely and responsibly.

17. Most teenagers are said to use social networking sites for interacting with existing friends.
_____
18. According to the passage, teens spend 2000 hours online annually. _____
19. Parents had better give their children instructions to use the social network properly. _____
20. It is said that it’s not easy for teens to avoid social network. _____
21. The word “It” in line 7 is nearest in meaning to:
A. a social networking site. B. an interview
C. research D. the University of California
22. What information is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Social networking has given teens the ability to connect with others.
B. Social networking is beneficial for teens.
C. Majorities of teens say social media helps them find different points of view.
D. The author mentions international politics to give an example of a shared interest.

NASA's Mars Global Surveyor has orbited the planet since March 1999 on a mission to map and
study the planet's entire surface. The long-term mission has produced particular insights into the
dynamic planet's changing seasons and shifting weather, including its infamous dust storms.
Perhaps the most famous of all Martian missions is that of the Mars exploration rovers Spirit and
Opportunity. These two rovers reached opposite sides of Mars in January 2004 and have
proceeded to explore the planet far more extensively than previous missions. The rovers have
covered several miles and returned more than 100,000 high-resolution images. Probing soil and
rocks, they have also used their fully equipped lab modules to conduct robotic field geology tests
on the Martian surface and even below it. Many future Mars missions are already in development
and will take place long before any human visits the planet. Scientists hope that robotic craft can
delve far beneath the Martian surface to return data, and possible samples, of the planet's geology.
Such missions could even find signs of the water, and possible life, that may lie hidden beneath
the planet's forbidding exterior.

If you haven’t already had a coronavirus vaccine. It’s likely you’ll be offered one at some point.
For many people this can’t come soon enough but others may feel wary about having a new
vaccine. (23) ______it make them feel unwell. First, let’s look at how some of them work to see
why they can’t give you Covid. mRNA vaccines use a tiny piece of the virus’s genetic code called

These days, most people in Britain and the US do not wear very formal clothes. But sometimes
it is important to wear the right things.
Many British people don’t think about clothes very much. They just like to be comfortable.
When they go out to enjoy themselves, they can wear almost anything. At theatres, cinemas and
concerts you can put on what you like from beautiful suits and dresses to jeans and sweaters.
Anything goes, as long as you look clean and tidy.
But in Britain, as well as the US, men in office usually wear suits and ties, and women wear
dresses or skirts (not trousers). Doctors and business people always wear quite formal clothes.
And in some hotels and restaurants men have to wear ties and women tidy dresses.
In any ways, Americans are less formal than Britain people, but they are more careful with
their clothes. At home, or on holiday, most Americans wear informal or sporty clothes. But when
they go out in the evening, they like to look nice. In good hotels and restaurants, men have to
wear jackets and ties, and women wear pretty clothes.
It is difficult to say exactly what people wear in Britain and the US, because everyone is

18. Doctors and business people do not wear formal clothes. ______
19. Men wear ties and jackets when they have dinner in good restaurants. ______
20. American people are more formal in their dressing than British people. ______
21. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Lawyers always wear formal clothes even though they are at home.
B. Most people in Britain and the US wear formal clothes.
C. Women are not allowed to wear trousers in the office.
D. Though everyone is different, they wear the same clothes in offices.
22. What do you think the passage is mainly about?
A. Recent dressing habits in the Britain and the United States.
B. This is why informal clothing is popular in the UK and USA.
C. When we should dress formally.
D. What should we wear in a formal way?

Many parents are concerned that their children will spend time (23) ______social networking
which they could be using to do their homework, exercises, or interact with people in the real
world.
They may feel that social networking sites are a waste of their children’s time. However, new
research claims that the (24) ______opportunities provided by social networking encourage young
people to explore their interests, (25) ______technical skills, and work on new forms of self-
Those
interested in chess or international politics, for example, can expand their circle with others who
share the same (26) ______and can find information that goes beyond that they have access to at
school. They can also publicize and distribute their music, art work, or writing to online
audiences, and gain visibility and enhance their (27) ______Teenagers create new modes of self-
expression and rules for social behavior online. New forms of online media allow them to acquire
technical skills through creating videos, writing blogs or customizing their online profiles. The
researchers said teens usually respect one another’s authority online, and they are often more
motivated to learn (28) ______than from their parents or other adults.

Solar energy can be trapped in several ways. One of the most effective technologies is the use
of solar power plants. These power plants are specifically designed to produce electricity on a
larger level. Other appliances and technologies that work on solar energy are solar cookers, solar
heaters, and solar cells.
Solar cookers are the most revolutionary methods of cooking nowadays. Instead of using
conventional fuels such as gas or wood, solar cookers work with the help of sunlight. They have a
glass lid which captures and concentrates all the sun rays to produce heat and cook food. Solar
cookers are eco-friendly and economical means of cooking.
Solar heaters are the appliances that help in heating the water with solar energy. These devices
work on the fluid-based technology. That means, either air or an anti-freezing fluid is put into the
collector so that the water can be heated without any electricity.
The last and third form is solar cells. These solar cells directly convert solar light into
electricity. Many calculators, wrist watches, and similar systems work with this technology. Not

Humans rely on natural resources for survival, but not all natural resources are renewable.
Therefore, it is necessary for everyone to conserve natural resources. There are several ways to do
this in your own home.
1. Use less water. Taking shorter showers or turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth can
cut down on water waste in your home. Only use your dishwasher or washing machine when
there is a full load, and switch to energy saving appliances if possible.
2. Turn off the lights. Turn off any lights or televisions after you leave a room. Unplug appliances
like air conditioners, toasters, and coffeemakers when not in use, as they can continue to use small
amounts of electricity. Additionally, LED light bulbs require far less wattage than standard bulbs,
so switching to this alternative lighting method can also help conserve resources.
3. Use renewable energy. Renewable energy is abundant and unlimited. Using solar panels or
wind energy can significantly reduce our reliance on natural gas and cut back on resource
depletion over time.
17. All natural resources are renewable, so people do not need to conserve. ______

Plastics is the term commonly used to describe a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic
materials that are used in a huge and growing range of applications. Everywhere you look, you
will find plastics. We use plastic products to help make our lives cleaner, easier, safer and more
enjoyable. We find plastics in the clothes we wear, the houses we live in, and the cars we travel in.
The toys we play with, the televisions we watch, the computers we use and the DVDs we watch
all contain plastics.
Plastics are organic materials, just like wood, paper or wool. The raw materials used to
produce plastics are natural products such as cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt and, of course, crude
oil. Plastics have become the modern material of choice because they make it possible to balance
today’s needs with environmental concerns.
The term “plastic” is derived from the Greek word “plastikos”, meaning fit for moulding. This
refers to the material’s malleability, or plasticity during manufacture, which allows it to be cast,
pressed, or extruded into a variety of shapes - such as films, fibres, plates, tubes, bottles, boxes,
and much more.

they should not be included in the UK’s total in their present state these days.
Such areas can support higher species richness but “very often the report finds that those benefits

authors.

Pollution from wood burning causes half of all harm from home heating, but provides only
11% of heat, says public health group
The air pollution from wood burning in homes is responsible for more than £1bn a year in
health-related damages in the UK and €10bn (£8.5bn) across the EU, according to a report.
The analysis from the European Public Health Alliance found the total costs of early deaths,
illness and lost work resulting from outdoor air pollution produced by all home heating was
€29bn a year.
Wood burning was the biggest single cause of these costs, accounting for 54% of the total in the
UK and 40% in the EU. This is despite wood stoves producing only 11% of heat in UK homes and
14% in the EU. The report combines burning wood in stoves and on open fires: in the UK two-
thirds of people use stoves.

The researchers said their cost estimates were conservative because lack of data prevented
them from including the effect and the influences of indoor air pollution from heating.
Compared with transport, regulators have largely neglected heating and cooking as sources of
air pollution, the EPHA said. The report found that heat pumps and solar water heaters produced
no air pollution at homes using them.
