PERFORMANCE TASK NO. 3
Concentration of Solutions

Direction: Answer the following problem and use the GUFSA method.

1. If there is 0.6 g of Pb present in 277 g of solution, what is the Pb concentration in parts

per million?

2. A fungus that grows on peanuts produces a deadly toxin. When ingested in large
amounts, this toxin destroys the liver and can cause cancer. Any shipment of peanuts that
contains more than 25ppb of this dangerous fungus us rejected. A company receives 20
tons of peanuts to make peanut butter. What is the maximum (in grams) of fungus that is
allowed?

3. A solution contains 50 mL of ethanol in 300 mL alcohol of solution. What is the percent

by volume concentration of the solution?

4. A bottle of hydrogen peroxide also known as Agua oxigeneda is labeled 3% by volume.

How many mL of agua oxigenada are in a 500 mL bottle of this solution?
5. 15 grams of Sodium bromide (NaBr) is dissolved in 400 mL of solution. What is the
molarity of the solution?

6. 10 grams of Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is dissolved in 500g of water. What is the molality
of the solution?

7. 25.7g of formaldehyde (CH2O) is dissolved in 3.25 mol of carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4);
calculate the mole fractions of formaldehyde.

8. What is the percent by mass concentration of a sugar solution that contains 8g of sugar
dissolved in 15g of water?
