Language Lab Response Brief

Your Name: Eric Sinclair

Over the last three language labs we have learned many different thought-provoking topics.
Each week there was something new but what stuck with me most was the language lab for
week 5. In this module we learned all about dialects, how they exist within and between
languages and more. Also, in the module there was a good video titled “do you speak
American?” In this video it goes into detail about all the different dialects within our own
country. It’s crazy to me how we all speak the same language and live in the same country yet
there are thousands of different dialects that exist in The United States of America. Depending
on the geographic area you are located in, this will decide the kinds of dialects you hear and
actually say yourself.

Another video in this module that was very interesting to me was “looking forward: an
example.” In which there is a news article saying the importance of children being able to use
home dialect in school, so they did not feel as lost during class. If I was able to have more time I
would like to go back and learn more about how this applies to other languages as well. Is there
languages that try to push the formality of the language too hard so that the language never
changes? This question and many more are just some of the things I would research if I had
more time.
