Let Us Study

Diwali Festival of India

India celebrates many festivals in honor of gods and goddesses and

Diwali is one such festival. Each region has its own stories as to why they
celebrate Diwali. According to me, this long carnival comprises of events
which brings out the “navarasas (Nine Emotions) in us. I call it a carnival
because we start anticipating the festival many days before- shopping for new
clothes, bursting crackers, etc. We exchange gifts with friends and relatives,
wrapped up with all these nine emotions in order to brighten up our mood
and spirit and be away from the daily routine and enjoy!

Life is already a continuous sequence of emotions leading to

extraordinary happenings with different hues and colours. Among these
emotions, the navarasas or the nine emotions which are the basics of all
emotions play the most important role in our life. Diwali is a festival which
brings out all these emotions, not in a single day. Each and every year during
Diwali we face at least one such event or happening relating to these nine
emotions. Every year I have seen a flavor of at least one of these navarasas in
my life.

Love and beauty: The most popular myth about Diwali is that Rama
returned from exile with Lakshmana and Sita. We all know about the
immense love and passion between Rama and Sita. India is one such country
where we have many festivals when we can get together with our loved ones.
It is a fascinating experience to celebrate these festivals with love and
harmony.

Fun or humour. We find humour in various situations but cannot forget

our younger days full of mischief and fun especially in school and college life.
The girls had brought crackers into the classroom. When the lecturer came
in, a cracker burst with a loud noise and the shell shocked lecturer left the

2
classroom as if threatening to report to the principal. But she came back calm
and composed and took the incident in fun spirit because it was diwali time.

Sadness. Sad incidents in life do bring grief in life but these happenings
eventually lead to deep introspections and work as a catalyst to evolve as
better people. A diwali day, some years back passed by with this emotion.
When we shifted to a new place and called our neighbour’s son to burst
crackers, it was a unique emotion we felt when they said that their son was
deaf and dumb and can’t hear the noise.

Anger: In South India, newly married couples celebrate their first diwali
in the girl’s house and the son-in-law and their family is invited. The son-in-
law’s anger for not fulfilling his dowry demands and wishes like gifting a ring
or a two wheeler is well known. This happens to be in continuation of the
dowry during marriage. This is still going on in interior parts of India. The
happiest Diwali will be one such time when dowry system is fully abolished.

Peace: is what we feel when we exchange pleasantries with our friends,

relatives and neighbours. Charitable acts within our limits, like distributing
sweets and clothes in hospitals and orphanages gives extraordinary peace for
some.Diwali is one such day when our mind, body and the universe undergoes
a complete harmony and we feel like sharing whatever we have with others.

Fear: It is well known that children are not aware of this emotion and
also ignorant of what exactly fire can do to them. Bursting crackers can lead
to fire accidents. Personally I would discourage bursting crackers. But thanks
to TV channels, the noise of crackers has considerably come down!

Bravery: In South India, the concept and reason for celebrating Diwali
itself is to recognize bravery. Bravery and courage to fight bad and evil is
depicted by the story of Lord Krishna and Sathyabama killing the demon
Narakasura.

Kindness: This is an emotion we rarely come across in human beings.

Diwali is a day when we can display our care and kindness to many. There
are lots of people who don’t even care or are interested in the celebration
because the reason is simple. Affordability constraint.

3
Awe and wonder: I was fortunate to come across a Divine Being who
was a depiction of extreme kindness – Kanchi Paramacharya. I am thankful
for living this life during His Avatar and I had this great opportunity of having
his Dharshan during a Diwali day which I consider a awe-inspiring
experience.

It is only during Diwali do we experience all these nine emotions when

we find even mundane things to be fascinating. So let us utilize the
opportunity of sharing these priceless emotions with everyone and especially
those who are near and dear to us.

Let Us Remember

Diwali Festival of India

• According to hindu mythology, diwali was celebrated for the

first time when Lord Rama(symbolizing Good) trounced raavan
(symbolising Evil) and rescued his spouse Sita from his
captivity.People of ayodhya celebrated this event by lighting
earthen diyas, and it has continued since then in India. As the
festival coincides with amavarsha(new moon night),it is believed by
people that evil demons can haunt their homes on that day and so
they light their houses with diyas to ward off evil.
• Diwali is also seen as a celebration of goddess lakshmi, the
goddess of wealth. She is thought to visit every house on that day
and fill it with wealth and prosperity. In some parts of India
especially west bengal, goddess kali is worshipped.
• Diwali in India is not just a festival of lights but a festival of
togetherness, of spreading happiness, of fostering new relations
and healing soiled ones. People throng bazaars, malls to buy new
clothes, gold and silver articles and a host of other goods before
this festival. Gifts are exchanged among friends and near and dear
ones to lift the spirits and churn up emotions. The bursting of
crackers and spreading of rangoli patterns add enthusiasm and
colour to this beautiful festival.
