Cigarette Should be Banned

Tobacco smoking is the practice of burning tobacco and ingesting the resulting smoke. The
smoke may be inhaled, as is done with cigarettes, or simply released from the mouth, as is
generally done with pipes and cigars. The practice is believed to have begun as early as 5000-
3000 BC in Mesoamerica and South America. The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) is the
global standard for systematically monitoring adult tobacco use. In the Philippines, the
Philippine statistics Authority (PSA), in coordination with the Department of Health (DOH),
conducted GATS in 2021 as a household survey of persons 15 years of age and older. The survey
result showed the tobacco use decreased from 29.7% in 2009 and 23.8% in 2015 to 19.5% in
2021. Still, one in five, or 15.1 million Filipino adults aged 15 years and older, are current
tobacco users. The percentage of adults using tobacco was eight times higher among males
(34.7%) the females (4.2%).
Republic Act No. 9211, also known as the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003, is an omnibus
law regulating smoking in Public places, tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, and
sales restrictions, among other requirements. There is now general agreement that in order to
substantially reduce smoking rates, governments need to adopt a comprehensive approach to
tobacco control. This should include a range of measures, notably: a total ban on tobacco
advertising and promotion; restrictions on smoking in public places and in the workplace;
sustained increases in tobacco taxation combined with measure to curb smuggling; large, bold
health warnings on tobacco products; smoking cessation and health education campaigns; and
the regulation of tobacco to standards agreed by the health community rather than those set by
the tobacco industry.
To sum it up smoking is not just about its users but on how it affect the one who’s using it. It
also state that many of the users are adults aged 15 years and older which also explains the bad
influence on the young people, that is why cigarette should be banned in the Philippines
