FALL/WINTER MEMBERSHIP MEETING NOVEMBER 20

Save the date - Sunday, November 20 at 6:30 p.m. to attend the Fall/Winter Membership Meeting at the Clubhouse. As a Member there is no more important single duty for you to perform for your Club than to attend this meeting and for you to listen and be heard. Attend and listen to your Board discuss the Club's financials. Listen as the board speaks to the strategic direction of the Club. Listen as the candidates standing for election to the three open positions on the Board introduce themselves. Listen to Committee Chairs briefly review the activities of their committees this year and their plans for next year. Listen to an overview of the proposed major revisions to the Club's bylaws. Then speak. Let your opinions and recommendations be heard. This meeting is the time for you to speak up and tell the Club's leadership and your fellow Members what you believe is good about the Club and constructive criticism about what can be improved. Speak about your suggestions regarding ways to make the ICD a better Club. It's been said that people get the government they deserve. Let your vote speak to the two major issues regarding the governance of our Club, namely our bylaws and the elections to the Board. According to Club bylaws, a quorum at a membership is composed of Members present. Attend the Membership Meeting so that a substantial quorum is achieved and a broad base of opinions is heard. Refreshments will be served. Ben Parlapiano

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT GIVING THANKS

I recently attended a seminar, and one of the topics covered a worklife balance. In the session they challenged us to make a gratitude list where each day for 30 days, we list three things for which we are grateful or thankful. In total I'll have 90 things that I am grateful for on the list when I complete it. While that might sound simple to do, once you move beyond the obvious like family, friends, a job, etc. it really does challenge you to think a bit deeper, and it starts to make you realize how much you have in life to be thankful for. This month, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I thought I'd make my own gratitude list about the Italian Club of Dallas. I am grateful for our Members. You support us enthusiastically and you talk to me often and honestly about what we can do to make our Club better. I am grateful for Angelo Vaccaro who contributes so much and in so many areas to ensure our Club's success, and I am grateful to Chef Tommaso for always striving to make our culinary and experience offerings better. I am grateful to my predecessors, as President, who have spent their time sharing with me what they have learned. I am grateful to many of our founding and long-time Members who take their time to help educate me about the Club's history and give me a foundation for our future direction. I am grateful to our many financial contributors who take it upon themselves to find ways to help support the Club's financial growth. I am grateful to the many people who oversee and support our committees such as Cultural, Communications, Charitable Outreach, Events, Membership and Marketing. I am grateful to the Members whose entire families get involved in supporting our Club regularly on many levels. I am grateful to the Members of I Colori Italiani for their continued participation and representation of the Club. I am grateful for the many very diverse offerings that we present in our facility to showcase our Italian heritage. I am grateful we can play bocce together, we can learn to speak Italian together, we can learn to cook together, we can sample wines together, and I am grateful that we have the freedom to celebrate Italian holidays together and a place to do it. While my list could go on much longer, my space is running out, so I'll conclude this by saying that I am grateful that I am an ItalianAmerican and I am grateful that I have the support of so many people to help our Club present our culture to those who wish they could be Italians! Before I close I would like to remind everyone of our General Membership Meeting on November 20. I encourage you to attend and have your voice heard as we discuss the future direction of the Club. This year has been one of financial stabilization and operational refinements for the Club. Moving forward we have to look to the growth of our Club in many areas. With the lack of a capital campaign in 2011 we are forecasting a downturn for the end of 2011 compared to last year. In order to sustain our financial stability it will require even more effort than last year and it will require new thinking, new ideas and a renewed focus on areas such as rentals and offerings to keep our momentum. Some of the best ideas this year have come from you, our Members. I encourage you to bring your voice and your ideas to the Membership Meeting on November 20, so we can work together to grow our Club. I hope each of you have a festive, safe and Happy Thanksgiving! Michael Trovalli, President ICD.Mike.Trovalli@gmail.com

ICD GROUP OUTING TO KIMBELL ART MUSEUM'S CARAVAGGIO AND HIS FOLLOWERS IN ROME
The Kimbell Art Museum is know nationally for the quality of the touring exhibits it offers to the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex, and few exhibits have been as highly anticipated as the one currently featured ~ Caravaggio and His Followers in Rome. You'll want to be part of the group of Italian Club Members and guests who will go to view this exhibit on Saturday, December 10, 10:00 a.m. at its only United States stop! One of the most influential figures in the history of art, Caravaggio (15711610) overturned the artistic conventions of the day and created singularly dramatic paintings, both sacred and worldly. This ambitious exhibition explores the profound impact of his work on the wide range of painters of Italian, French, Dutch, Flemish, and Spanish origin who resided in Rome. Arranged by theme, it includes over 50 paintings, with Caravaggio's compelling images juxtaposed with those he inspired. This is the second largest display of his paintings in North America and only the third Caravaggio exhibition to be held in the United States. Carpooling will be arranged for our trip out to Fort Worth. And, in what has become a favorite post-Kimbell activity, those who want to discuss the exhibit and any other topic that might arise! will go to lunch at the Taverna Risotteria & Pizzeria in Sundance Square. Prices for the exhibit are $14 for ICD Members, $16 for ICD guests, $12 for ICD Members aged 60+, $14 for ICD guests aged 60+, $12 for students with ID, and, as always, FREE for Kimbell Members. Space is very limited, so ICD Members only will be able to RSVP until Nov. 23 ~ remaining spaces will be made available to ICD guests at that point. Please RSVP at icdcaravaggio.eventbrite.com, and contact Mary Ann Webster at culture@italianclubdallas.org with any questions. Don't miss this singular opportunity to learn about one of Italy's most innovative and influential artists. Though he lived only 38 years and had a life filled with controversy, the beauty and maturity of his art are undeniable. Come spend an afternoon with Caravaggio and His Followers in Rome! Mary Ann Webster

NOVEMBER BOOK CLUB NEWS

In Amore: The Story of Italian American Song, author Mark Rotella brings to life the great Italian American voices of the twentieth century, as he recounts the tremendous contributions to American music made by Italian immigrants and their children. Rotella poignantly describes the bigotry and challenges faced by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Mario Lanza, Tony Bennett and other great voices as they rose from humble beginnings in their adopted country to achieve fame and fortune through the strength of their musical talents. Join the Book Club to reminisce about these great voices on Thursday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m. For more information, contact the Book Club Coordinator, Norma Iacovo at niacovo@tnsk.com or 972-386-4321. Remember that Christmas is just around the corner, and CDs of many of these talented Italian-American artists can be purchased through the ICD's portal to Amazon. CDs make great stocking stuffers, and Amazon donates to the Club a percentage of any purchase made through the Club's portal. Norma Iacovo

FREE LADIES MOVIE NIGHT IN NOVEMBER MOONSTRUCK

Love arrives with the full moon in New York's Little Italy, and you are invited to share the laughter and the tears with the Castorini family in this classic romantic comedy. Ladies Movie Night continues our popular series on Thursday, November 3, 7:00 p.m., with Moonstruck. In her most memorable role, Cher stars as Loretta Castorini, the unmarried older daughter of a second-generation Italian family, who blossoms under the attention of a young baker and finally finds passion and true love. The movie also features a very young and handsome Nicolas Cage as Loretta's new love and Olympia Dukakis as her wise Italian mama. Sharply written, incisively directed, and beautifully acted, Moonstruck has earned its place among the screen's classic comedies. This romance is a charming slice of Italian-American life that is a joy to watch. The movie also includes some scenes and memorable arias from Puccini's opera La Boheme at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. This event is FREE and open to all ladies. The Clubhouse will open at 6:30 p.m. A light pasta and salad buffet dinner will be provided by our own Chef Tommaso. Invite your girlfriends to the Italian Club for a relaxing night of dinner, trivia, and the movie. Bring a dessert to share, if you wish. Beverages will be available for purchase. We will be in the bar area for this month's film, which will make for even more fun and familial viewing ~ as if in your own Castorini-like Italian home! Please remember to register your attendance (no charge) so we'll know you are coming. Contact Mary Ann Webster at culture@italianclubdallas.org if you have questions, and please RSVP at http://ladiesmoviemoonstruck.eventbrite.com. We'll see you at the movies on November 3rd! SPECIAL OLYMPICS BOCCE A WIN-WIN EVENT

There were no losers at the Special Olympics Bocce Tournament held at Oran Good Park in Farmers Branch on Saturday, September 24. The Special Olympians and their families, tournament administrators, monitors, and scorekeepers participated in an event where everyone came away winners. While the scoring might seem to prove otherwise, the intensity and spirit of good sportsmanship demonstrated by all the participants; the dedication to, and almost palpable love families and friends had for the Olympians; the hard work of Tournament Director Julia Scott and her staff; and the onfield positive interaction of monitors and scorekeepers with the contestants and their astute handling of the games made winners of them all. It was indeed a day of celebration of all that is good in the human spirit. Very special thanks go to the Italian Club of Dallas members whose participation helped to make it a very special time: Annettee DiCarlo, Tony DiCarlo, Lisa Newman, Megan Sparks, Tina Neal, Karen Mungioli, Kathy Miller, Fred Hansen, Nick Parigi, John Pulley, Jay Laurenzi, Luigi Mungioli and Nick Bonvino. As Julia Scott said at the end of the day, See you all next year. Ben Parlapiano

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

AGNELLO CON LE CIPOLLINE STEWED LAMB WITH BUTTON ONIONS
From Basilicata, here is a very tasty, simple recipe for stewed lamb with button onions. Serves 6

When it comes to what to drink with a great meal, Italians don't limit themselves to wine and limoncello ~ they also enjoy good scotch! Why don't you branch out, too, on Saturday, November 19, when the Italian Club of Dallas presents a scotch tasting and dinner featuring the exceptional Scotch of Dalmore. Established in the Scottish Highlands in 1830 and acquired by Whyte & Mackay in 2001, Dalmore produces the finest of single malt Scotches. Chef Tommaso will create one of his excellent four-course dinners, with each course designed to complement each individual scotch. Whyte & Mackay representative Trent Roberts will guide participants through the tasting, with products ranging from a 15 year-old single malt to the magnificent 1263 King Alexander III single malt. Door prizes and a raffle featuring gifts donated by Whyte & Mackay will add the final touch to the festivities. You may think that all scotches are the same ~ or that scotch isn't really the drink for you ~ but this event will show you otherwise. Each pour will highlight the individuality of the product and will show that there is a scotch for every palate. Don't miss this one-of-a-kind evening featuring outstanding cuisine, drinks, and fellowship in the Clubhouse's warm and welcoming setting. Cocktails will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Look for the menu to be posted online. The cost for the event is $60 for ICD Members and $80 for ICD Guests.
