PART – B

Title of the Micro-Project

1.0 RATIONALE

Depending on the type of structural member, suitable supports are placed or

built for load transfer. Structural members can span either vertically or
horizontally. Roller, pinned, and fixed connections are the three most
common types of supports in beams and structures to connect them to its
foundation

2.0 AIMS/ BENEFITS OF THE MICROPROJECT

tools like sine bar, sine center, bevel protractor, gear tooth Fixed supports is
important types of supports in beams and structures that can resist horizontal,
vertical forces and moments. They are also known as rigid supports because
they prevent both rotation and translation. This indicates that for a structure to
be stable, it only requires one fixed support..

3.0 COURSE OUTCOME ACHIEVED

Compute shear force and bending moment and corresponding shear and bending
stresses in beams subjected to point and uniformly distributed load.
4.0 ACTUAL METHODOLOGY FOLLOWED

1. Firstly we discussed the topic with all group members.

2. We collect some information about given topic with help of the internet
and books to make a report.

3. In the report we add all information related to a given topic.

4. After the making report we make ….

Beams are generally horizontal structural members which transfer loads
horizontally along their length to the supports where the loads are usually
resolved into vertical forces. Beams are used for resisting vertical loads, shear
forces and bending moments.

The beams usually have three different types of support:

 Hinged or pinned support
 Roller support
 Fixed support

Hinged or pinned support:

The hinged support is capable of resisting force acting in any direction of the
plane. Hence, in general the reaction at such a support may have two components,
one in horizontal and another in vertical direction. To determine these two
components two equations of statics must be used. Usually, at hinged end the
beam is free to rotate but translational displacement is not possible. The hinged
and roller supports are also termed as simple supports.
Roller support:
The roller support is capable of resisting a force in only one specific line or action.
The roller can resist only a vertical force or a force normal to the plane on which
roller moves. A reaction on this type of supports corresponds to a single unknown
figure.

The hinged and roller supports are also termed as simple supports.

Fixed Support:
The fixed support is capable of resisting of force in any direction and is also
capable of resisting a couple or a moment. A system of three forces can exist at
such a support (i.e., two components of force and a moment).
What are the different types of supports
and their reactions in structure?

Different types of support are as follows:

 Simple Support – In mechanics, simple support is a type of support that

can only resist forces in the vertical direction. This type of support is
often used in trusses and other structural elements. It is important to
understand the limitations of simple support when designing a system, as
the support may not be able to handle forces in other directions.
 Fixed Support: A fixed support is a type of support that can resist forces
in all directions. We use fixed beams generally in the frames and other
structures where we need more stability.

 Roller Support: Finally, roller support is a type of support that can resist
forces in the horizontal direction. This type of support is often used in
bridges and other structures that require the ability to move in one
direction.

Supports are used to provide stability to beams. They are often used at the
ends of a beam.

Applications of supports in beams include:

 Bridges
 Beams in buildings
 Beds of machine tools
 Cantilever beams

We learned the different types of Supports in beam in strength of material.

And also known the different types of supports in beam information.
