THE FIVE ACTION EXERCISE

The purpose of this exercise is to learn how to simply play an action and to change the action on the breath.

Through improvisation or by choice, you have discovered actions.

THREE STEPS OF THE ACTION EXERCISE

1. Say the action, then take a breath and play the action while speaking the lyric. The action should start on the
breath. Do this for all five actions.

2. Say the action, then take a breath and play the action while singing the lyric. The action should start on the breath.
Do this for all five actions.

3. Do not say the action, just let go and live while singing and acting for all five actions.

NOTES:

1. The actions change when you decide they change. So an action can be played for one line, three lines, five
lines, etc. OR you can be singing and holding a note and play three different actions. You do NOT necessarily
need an action for every sentence.

2. Some actions are internal, some are physical and some are both at the same time.

3. Some actions need adverbs as in "to teach" - to teach sweetly, impatiently, angrily, matter-of-factly
