Topic 2: People should follow the customs and traditions when people start to live in a new

country. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

ANSWER:
These days, an increasing number of people are immigrating into another city for various
reasons, while some believe that they should quickly learn new customs in new places, others
still keep their old habits and beliefs. In my point of view, adapting to new traditions is totally
beneficial for newcomers/ adapting to new traditions brings about significant advantages for
newcomers.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that understanding and behaving as an indigenous person
quickly helps an immigrant to integrate into a new community. Firstly, by participating in
traditional festivals, eating and making traditional cakes or meals to learn about traditional
values, newcomers may easily broaden their friends’ network/engaging in traditional festivals
and partaking in the preparation and consumption of traditional cuisine allows newcomers to
expand their social circle, share common interests and discover more about the new city from
local residents. Isolating themselves from community’s activities and events or refusing to accept
new rules of life may lead to a feeling of desperation and loneliness in a new environment.
Secondly, learning about cultural identities through customs and traditions can make
immigrants to be more sympathetic and compassionate with distinction in communicating,
interacting and actions of local people/ gaining an understanding of cultural identities through
customs and traditions helps immigrants develop empathy and compassion towards the unique
ways in which local people communicate, interact, and behave. This can result in increased
intimation, mutual understanding and tolerance in relationships with people around,
consequently, building a better community, a connected world.
On the other hand, it is said that failure to absorb intangible social rules can cause/ bring
discomfort problems to newcomers. Primarily, lack of customs in public is more likely to
generate a bad impression about an individual in the eyes of a crowd. For example, lining up to
wait for your turn in a restaurant or a supermarket is something conventional in Western
countries, but it is not in some Asian countries. Not following the line in a casher of a souvenir
shop can make other customers angry and yell at you in public, which is really embarrassing/
Failing to observe proper queuing etiquette in a cashier line at a souvenir shop can lead to
anger from other customers who may express their frustration publicly, causing significant
embarrassment. Additionally, without deeply understanding local customs or traditions,
enterprises which have intention to start a business there may waste a large amount of money in
some circumstances. For instance, the Steak restaurant T&T totally changed their menu in
Indian branches as they did not know that almost all Indians do not consume beef because of
their religion.
In conclusion, it is certainly true that adopting traditions and rules in a new city where people
you have just arrived is the best way that someone/they can enjoy and integrate into a new life.
