Behavioral Family Model of Teaching Lesson Plan for a Math Block Period

Standards Common Core Standard: Eighth Grade Math 7a and 7b

Solve linear equations in one variable.
a. Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one
solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions. Show
which of these possibilities is the case by successively
transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an
equivalent equation of the form x=a, a=a, or a=b results.

Objectives  Students will be able to solve multi-step equations that

include the distributive property, combining like terms,
moving variables to one side, and solving the two-step
equation.

Materials and  Math foldable

Resources  Multi-step equations task cards that include all steps
 PowerPoint with notes on solving multi-step equations

Anticipatory Set (10 Students will be asked to brainstorm what they know about solving
equations based on what they have learned in seventh grade (inverse
minutes)
operations, variables, one-step and two-step equations). Students will
be given the opportunity to share. We will review as we share.
Activities/Procedures Input/Modeling:
1. Review order to solve equations – undo addition and subtraction then
undo multiplication and division.
2. Review distributive property and multiplying everything within
parenthesis by the outside.
3. Introduce the steps to solving a multistep equation – Distributive
property, combine like terms, move variables to one side, and solve the
two-step equation. Students will take notes during this time.
4. Model 1 problem that involves all the steps.
5. Complete a problem together that all involves all the steps.
6. Complete a second problem together that does not involve all the steps
to show how to identify when to move on from a step.

Check for understanding/Guided Practice:

(During the second block period)
Students will create a foldable that shows each step of the process to refer to.
They will be guided through this by the teacher.
Students will work with their partner (the person sitting next to them) to solve
a series of problems on the task cards given to them. They will both solve the
problem and then check to see if they both arrived at the same answer.

Independent Practice:
Students will be given 5 practice problems to solve. The teacher will circulate
the room to provide help. Any problems not completed in class will be for
homework.

Closures Students will be given an exit ticket at the end of class that has one
multi-step equation that they need to solve.

Assessments Formative:
Formative assessments will take place throughout the lesson with
cooperative learning and student completing the exit ticket.
Summative:
After covering the unit, students will take a test over the whole unit
which will also include identifying the number of solutions.
