CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter includes the introduction, statement of the problem, objectives of the
study, frameworks, significance of the study and definition.

Introduction
Nowadays, high school students have a hard time balancing their school works,
activities, and non-academic activities. As a result of these factors, the academics or the
performance of the student in the aspect of academics were being affected. ECA or the
Extra-Curricular Activities are also beneficial to the students for it also give some
percentage of the grades of the students.
Extracurricular activity is an outside activity that is not related to academics.
Merriam-Webster defines extra-curricular as an “outside one’s regular work,
responsibilities, and routine.” If applied to a students’ context, this will be the non-
academic activities that they, the students, engage in based on their interests. Eccles
and Barber’s found that participation in such activities tend to reduce students’
engagement in risky behavior (drinking, smoking, etc.). Students who are part of extra-
curricular activities can get exemption and incentives which may encourage and
motivate the students to do more (Lunenburg, 2010). Extracurricular activities are
essential because they develop hobbies and interests, skills in working in groups, and
participation in athletics that lead to the discovery and cultivation of talents. By
Cadwallader, Garza, and Wagner (2002) extracurricular activities are defined as the
activities in which students participate after the regular school day has ended. But it is
not always like that. Sometimes, the school has training during class hours. The

vii

Las Piñas City, 1740

participants are being pulled out for the sake of training and this is a resulting variable
from the interaction between curricular and extracurricular activities.

An important question arises that why some youngsters remain underachieved,

are unable to have confidence in themselves and not do something great in their life.
These things in addition to their academic performance can be linked to the activities
that they do outside the classroom. Along with the benefits of participation in these
activities, one should also know about its adverse effects, how one should maintain a
balance between extracurricular and academics, How participating in different activities
can have different effects in the future. Keeping in mind the growing rate of un-
employability of the young generation especially in Pakistan, it is often claimed by the
employers that students who develop additional skills outside the classroom are
preferred over the students who just focus on their studies, as participating in
extracurricular activities develops self-confidence, improves communication skills and
also help in promoting other characteristics such as teamwork and leadership in the
individuals. But some people say that by getting involved in these activities, students
become detracted from their studies, lose their focus, and are stressed from this
overburden, and hence their academic performance decreases.

Local Studies

Extracurricular activities help keep kids in school – expert

According to Sofia Tomacruz, (2018) MANILA, Philippines – Schools can help poor
students finish elementary and high school by focusing on efforts that develop

xiii
HOLY ROSARY ACADEMY OF LAS PIÑAS CITY

extracurricular activities, University of the Philippines (UP) senior researcher Karol Mark
Yee said in a recent forum.

Yee said this will help students stay in school as this would give them more reasons to
keep attending, beyond classes and tests. Extracurricular activities range from sports to
a variety of clubs or even remedial classes.

"In other countries, tried and tested methods are that there are holistic supports. It can't
just be teaching," he said in a forum on higher education hosted by the UP Center for
Integrative and Development Studies on Thursday, October 4.

Effects of Extracurricular Participation During Middle School on Academic

Motivation and Achievement at Grade 9

According to Hughes (2016) The above research takes into account "propensity
scores to minimize selection effects in non-experimental studies". Students who are
equally likely to participate in an extracurricular activity are grouped together so that any
correlation between extracurricular activities and academic performance is not due to
another factor. This is important because participation in extracurricular activities, as
expected, correlates with race and socio-economic status. As noted in the study,
Hispanics are less likely to participate in extracurricular activities compared to Whites.
On the other hand, African Americans are as likely to be engaged in sports as Whites
but not in the performance arts. Taking these factors out allows for finding a
relationship, if there is any, between extracurricular activities and academic
performance. Not doing so only leads to the familiar academic gaps due to race and
socioeconomic status.

With propensity scores, the correlation becomes cleaner. Extracurricular activities are
indeed correlated with academics. And since minorities and poor children participate

xiv
HOLY ROSARY ACADEMY OF LAS PIÑAS CITY
St. Joseph Ave. corner Naga Road, Pulanglupa Dos,
Las Piñas City, 1740

less in these activities, this simply becomes one more channel for wealthy children to
have advantage over others. Thus, the study concludes that disadvantaged students
should be provided ample opportunities for extracurricular activities. This is one way to
increase engagement in school, reduce dropouts, and temper the effects of poverty on
education.

A Study to Determine the Effects of Extra Curricular Activities to the Academic

Performance of Selected Students in a Night High School

According to anonymous (2019) Nowadays, high school students have a hard time
balancing their school works, activities, and non- academic activities. In result of these
factors, the academics or the performance of the student in the aspect of academics
were being affected. ECA or the Extra Curricular Activities are also beneficial to the
students for it also give some percentage of the grades of the students.

Based from the past studies, researchers discovered that academic performance of
students in schools are affected by the of ECA of the students. The extracurricular
activities have a big role that mainly affects the academic performance of the students.

The main respondents of the researchers are the Grade 7 – 10 students who are
participating the different extra – curricular activities inside and outside school. The
researchers decided to interview this student as they are the main scope of this study.

Extracurricular are those that fall outside the scope of your regular curriculum.
Extracurricular activities exist for all students. Extra-Curricular activities molds the
students to social, academic, physical and emotional growth of students. Examples of
extracurricular activities are student governments, academic clubs, scouts, athletes, fine
arts, publications, and special interest activities.

This research takes place at Regino Mercado Night High School, consolidated in the
school year 2018-2019. Most of the time, the Junior High School Students are the one
who have many experience taking extracurricular activities while having their
academics. The purpose of this study is to know the effects of extracurricular activities
to the academic performance of selected students in Regino Mercado Night High
School and if extra curricular activities would be an advantage or disadvantage for the
students.

According to Gallemit, “et al” (2016-2017), the Department of Education (DepEd)

memorandum or the Republic act no. 10533 or Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013
(K-12 Law), grades between academic and extracurricular activities are being
separated. Points from extracurricular activities are not to be added to the overall
grades of students anymore. The researchers believe that this is an aspect of the study
that will greatly affect the academic performance of students especially, the ones who
are active in Extra-curricular activities and dependent on it in improving their grades.

Local Literature

Work towards extracurricular activities – Philippines

According to anonymous (2018) Extracurricular activities are important for working

and for learning as well. We find parents telling and encouraging their teens to study
more and play less. All this is done in pursuit of a goal. The parents believe that
devoting quality time in studies would surely bring success in future.

However, apart from the books and e-learning, there is something more which can
attract and help in well-rounded education. Some major activities under extra curricular
include basketball, baseball, drama, student government, choir, computer clubs and
much more. Enrolling in them and playing these games can highly affect studies. It can

xvi
HOLY ROSARY ACADEMY OF LAS PIÑAS CITY
St. Joseph Ave. corner Naga Road, Pulanglupa Dos,
Las Piñas City, 1740

make learning easier and comfortable. Moreover, students can also make them as their
career.

Besides being a stress releaser, these activities also boosts socializing with peers and
enhances student’s time management and the stress management skills. Furthermore,
the extra-curricular activities also help to aggravate a candidate’s appeal while applying
for admission in a college.

It is to be understood that students participating in extracurricular works are held to a

higher-strata. They know the method of living in groups by developing leadership skills
and managing tensions in easier way.

What Makes Students in the Philippines Actively Participate in Extra-Curricular

Activities?

According to Nathan John Gatchalian (2015) Extra-curricular is defined as extra

activities done by students in a school but not part of the regular class curriculum, and
activities defined as something done for pleasure or purpose that usually involves a
group (Merriam-Webster, 2015). Extra-curricular Activities are extra activities done by a
group of students in school for pleasure or a particular purpose outside the regular class
curriculum.

The types of extra-curricular activities include: (1) sports, (2) jobs—working before and
after class hours, and (3) anything done by a student not for a grade or graduation
requirement (Wierschem, n.d).

Extra-curricular activities fulfill two (2) basic conditions: (1) they are not part of regular
school curriculum; and there is a structure for a pro-social mission or goal (Brown, n.d).

xvii
HOLY ROSARY ACADEMY OF LAS PIÑAS CITY
St. Joseph Ave. corner Naga Road, Pulanglupa Dos,
Las Piñas City, 1740

Extra-curricular activities are effective when: (1) students have the chance to cultivate
relationships with adults and pro-social peers; (2) the activity has goals that encourage
students to achieve great things; (3) students have the opportunity to be leaders or
being in-charge of a committee; (4) the activity is age-appropriate; and most importantly
(5) the activity is enjoyable for the student.

Participation in extra-curricular activities promotes greater academic achievement

because school-related activities are more strongly associated with achievement
(Gerber, 1996).

Extra-curricular activities are essential because they develop: (1) hobbies and interests,
(2) skills in working in groups, (3) participation in athletics that lead to the discovery and
cultivation of talents (Lunenburg, 2010).

Foreign Studies

Academic Performance and Behavioral Patterns

According to Valentin, Kassarnig, Mones., Enys. & Lehmann, Sune. (2018)

Identifying the factors that influence academic performance is an essential part of
educational research. Previous studies have documented the importance of personality
traits, class attendance, and social network structure. Because most of these analyses
were based on a single behavioral aspect and/or small sample sizes, there is currently
no quantification of the interplay of these factors. Here, we study the academic
performance among a cohort of 538 undergraduate students forming a single, densely
connected social network. Our work is based on data collected using smartphones,
which the students used as their primary phones for two years. The availability of multi-
channel data from a single population allows us to directly compare the explanatory

xviii
HOLY ROSARY ACADEMY OF LAS PIÑAS CITY
St. Joseph Ave. corner Naga Road, Pulanglupa Dos,
Las Piñas City, 1740

power of individual and social characteristics. We find that the most informative
indicators of performance are based on social ties and that network indicators result in
better model performance than individual characteristics (including both personality and
class attendance). We confirm earlier findings that class attendance is the most
important predictor among individual characteristics. Finally, our results suggest the
presence of strong homophily and/or peer effects among university students.

Factors Affecting Student Academic Performance: Case Study from University of

Somalia in Mogadishu-Somalia

According to Dahie, Abdulkadir (2018) This paper investigated factors affecting on

student academic performance. The paper had four objectives which are: 1) to examine
the role of learning techniques on student academic performance. 2) To identify the
impact of home related aspects on student academic performance. 3) To investigate the
relationship between study habits and student academic performance. To describe the
effect of physical resource on student academic performance. This study was
conducted through case study method to examine role of factors affecting on student
academic performance. The study utilized descriptive, correlation and regression
analyze to answer the research objectives and to test the research hypothesis. The
researchers collected the information from 80 students in University of Somalia. These
respondents were provided a questionnaire with five main construct which measuring
learning technique, home related aspects, study habits, physical resource and
academic performance. The study found that there is strong positive relationship
between learning techniques and student academic performance at (r=.964 and
p>0.01). This shows that if students get well learning technique, they will come with
good performance. The findings indicated that there is strong positive relationship
between home related aspect and student academic performance at (r=.790 and
p>0.01). The result displayed strong positive relationship between study habits and
student academic performance at (r=.819 and p>0.01). Finally the study showed strong

xix

St. Joseph Ave. corner Naga Road, Pulanglupa Dos,
Las Piñas City, 1740

positive relationship between physical resource and student academic performance at

(r=.819 and p>0.01). It is evident that learning technique, home related aspects, study
habits and physical resource have positive relationship with academic performance.
Similarly, students with good academic performance have better learning techniques,
home related aspects, study habits and physical resource.

Top 8 Benefits of Extracurricular Activities for High School Students

According to Crimson (2018)

1.Some students worry that participating in extra-curricular may take away too much
time from their schoolwork, thus hurting their grades; however, extracurricular activities
can actually improve your grades and your outlook on school in general
2. Explore Interests and Create Broader Perspectives
When you participate in multiple different activities, you’ll get the opportunity to explore
a range of interests and unlock passions you never knew you had!
3.Higher Self-esteem
The more you achieve success through activities you’re passionate about, the more
your self-confidence will improve.
4.Social Opportunities
Let’s be honest, making friends can be hard but one of the easiest ways to make friends
is through extracurricular activities!
5.Productive Breaks
Extracurricular activities give you something fun to do aside from school. It also gives
you the chance to explore you are passions to discover things you may be interested
6.Essential Life Skills
On top of all of the benefits of extracurricular activities we already talked about, one of
the greatest advantages extracurricular activities give you are “real world” skills.
7.Resumes

xx
HOLY ROSARY ACADEMY OF LAS PIÑAS CITY
St. Joseph Ave. corner Naga Road, Pulanglupa Dos,
Las Piñas City, 1740

Without much previous work experience, one of the only ways hiring managers can
assess your ability and work ethic is through your extracurricular activities.
8.University Applications
It’s pretty much impossible to get into any university in the US or UK without
extracurricular activities. Universities in the US & UK want to see that you’ve gone
above and beyond in your intended area of study and have made a difference and/or
excelled your field.

The Impact of Extra-Curricular Activities On Friends and Academics

According to Green, Ashley (2016) Research has proven time and time again that
children’s friends can directly impact their academic performance. But, what about a
connection between extracurricular activities, friends and academic performance?

“There has been quite a bit of research on extracurricular participation and it is generally
thought to be very helpful for children. However, there were some unanswered
questions we thought were important to pursue,” explained Professor Emeritus Dr. Jan
Hughes.

Before the students entered middle school and had a chance to participate in
extracurricular activities, they were measured on a wide variety of variables related to
academic and social performance. Researchers interviewed those students several
times during their middle school years. The goal was to find out if there really was an
effect of extracurricular activities on both academic and social outcomes.

School Engagement Higher for Children Involved in Extracurricular Activities

xxi
HOLY ROSARY ACADEMY OF LAS PIÑAS CITY
St. Joseph Ave. corner Naga Road, Pulanglupa Dos,
Las Piñas City, 1740

According in United States Census Bureau (2018) A new report from the U.S.
Census Bureau shows that children tend to have higher levels of school engagement
when involved in one or more activities, like sports, lessons or clubs.

The report, “A Child’s Day,” found that 42 percent of children who took lessons were
highly engaged compared to 33 percent of children who did not. The report also
examined school engagement and other measures of child well-being.

Children in poverty were less likely to participate in each of the three extracurricular
activities (sports, lessons and clubs) than those not in poverty. Children with a college-
educated parent were more likely to be in a gifted program, and less likely to have ever
been expelled or repeated a grade.

The Disadvantages of Extracurricular Activities

According to Moss, Lauralee (2017) Students have a variety of extracurricular

activities to choose, from speech team to chorus to multiple sports for every season.
This variety can benefit students immensely. According to the children's education
company Scholastic, extracurricular let your child enjoy himself in a fun, stress-free
environment, get some exercise and make friends outside of school for all the positive
aspects, extracurricular activities can cause some problems for students. Be sure the
disadvantages of extracurricular activities do not outweigh the advantages. Putting
children in extracurricular activities too early can cause burn out. Scholastic states
parents should not think that an early start in anything will lead to a career because
most children do not grow up to be professional musicians or athletes. Extracurricular
activities can teach children discipline, teamwork and other life skills but early
involvement might be overwhelming for young students.

The Importance of Students’ Motivation for Their Academic Achievement –

Replicating and Extending Previous Findings

According to Steinmayr, Ricarda., Weidinger, Anne. & Schwinger, Malte (2019)

Achievement motivation is not a single construct but rather subsumes a variety of
different constructs like ability self-concepts, task values, goals, and achievement
motives. The few existing studies that investigated diverse motivational constructs as
predictors of school students’ academic achievement above and beyond students’
cognitive abilities and prior achievement showed that most motivational constructs
predicted academic achievement beyond intelligence and that students’ ability self-
concepts and task values are more powerful in predicting their achievement than goals
and achievement motives. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the
reported previous findings can be replicated when ability self-concepts, task values,
goals, and achievement motives are all assessed at the same level of specificity as the
achievement criteria.

Career Planning: Resume Writing Tips – Honors, Awards, and Accomplishments

According to Peterson's (2018) In a competitive academic and job market, many

students or recent grads find themselves lost in the shuffle, especially when other
applicants have similar academic or work histories. Academic and work
accomplishments are what set you apart from the hundreds, perhaps thousands, of
other candidates vying for the same seat in college or that job you really want.
Admissions directors and hiring managers know that past achievement usually predicts
future performance. They also know that achievers are self-starters, motivated, and an
asset to their school or company.

Maximizing Educational Outcomes with Extracurricular Activities

xxiii
HOLY ROSARY ACADEMY OF LAS PIÑAS CITY
St. Joseph Ave. corner Naga Road, Pulanglupa Dos,
Las Piñas City, 1740

According to Alhadeff, Sam (2019) Ensuring the educational achievement of children

in America is both a core value of the American people and a vital goal of the United
States federal and state governments. The United States spent over 600 billion dollars
in 2013-14 (in 2016 dollars) on public education, which amounts to roughly 12,500
dollars per pupil in the public education system in kindergarten through twelfth grade. [1]
Of its many goals, America’s public education system aims to educate its future leaders
and citizens. Policymakers throughout the nation are constantly striving to implement
new strategies that maximize these educational outcomes. While the focus has primarily
been on educational achievement and classroom learning, extracurricular activities
(EAs) have also been championed as a complementary strategy that aids in the
improvement of behavioral and cognitive learning, teaching valuable life and learning
skills that translate to better success both inside and outside of the classroom.

5 Proven Benefits to Multiple Extracurricular Activities

(Balancing Out Study)

According to Jennings, Jana (2019)

Better Academic Performance
Far from being overwhelmed, my daughter made all A’s in her academic classes. By
participating in extracurricular activities, she learned new skills to apply to school. And,
her grades reflect how beneficial those activities were.

More Adaptable
If a child participates in more than one activity, they will encounter multiple sets of rules
and expectations from teachers. They will also have the opportunity to meet kids with
different personalities and interests.

Better Social Skills

By participating in extracurricular activities, children will gain social skills from interacting
with authorities and their peers. They will also learn about teamwork by playing a sport
or participating in group classes such as music or drama.

Less Screen Time

According to a research report by Common Sense Media, the average teen spends
over nine hours per day playing video games or watching TV.

Decreased Risk of Obesity

According to the CDC, obesity has affected about 12.7 million children and adolescents
over the past decade.

Children who participate in sports will lead healthier lives, be physically fit, and be more
active than their peers who sit inside consuming media.

Importance of Extracurricular Activities for College Admissions

According to Saran, Ruchi (2020) Extracurricular activities are not extra but it shows
what extra activities you have done outside your classroom. It also builds your
confidence, positive energy, and helps remain focused.

Let’s take Tara and Sid who are in Grade 11 and both have applied to the University of
Michigan for a computer science major. Both Tara and Sid have excellent grades and
Sid has an ACT score of 36 while Tara’s ACT score is 34. Sid is a tennis player and has
won many Inter-School matches and teaches the local kids’ tennis while Tara has spent
her last 5 years building an app for her school to track the school buses and is the
founder and President of her girls Robotics club. She also raised $1500 to teach the
local girls how to code.

How Can We Measure School Performance?

According to Cowen Institute (2017) The Cowen Institute’s new report, How Can We
Measure School Performance? examines accountability systems for schools,
comparing both national and international frameworks. The publication of the report
coincides with the efforts of the Louisiana Department of Education and Orleans Parish
School Board to revise their accountability standards. By examining the ways in which
other communities hold their schools accountable, the report offers ideas on innovative
practices and measurement tools. The report shows that accountability is not a one-
size-fits-all model and that there are many ways to approach this issue. It is intended to
inform both education stakeholders and the public-at-large as they consider changes to
the current accountability standards.

Academic success: Is it just about the grades?

According to Cachia, Moira., Lynam, Siobhan. & Stock, Rosemary (2017)

Researchers examining academic success often quantify it in terms of assessment
grades. This assumption is questioned here by considering the students’ understanding
of academic success. The presented study aimed to identify students’ views of its
definition and the factors they perceive as crucial in attaining it. Sixteen undergraduate
Psychology students at a modern university in London, United Kingdom took part in one
of three focus groups. Participants defined academic success as: the accomplishment
of the learning process; gaining subject knowledge; and developing employability skills.
Thematic analysis of the collected data resulted in two themes: intrinsic factors,
including motivation, self-directed learning and personal skills; and extrinsic factors,
including teaching content and the student support structure.

Importance of extracurricular activities in school life

According to Naik, Nirbhay (2018) There is always an argument that extracurricular

activities are not so much important in a child’s life. For development, extra activities are
also most important in student’s life.
Students are pressurized during exams and they have performance pressure too of
gaining good grades. In such conditions, there is a need for some extra activities. You
cannot force a student to just read books and become intelligent. Extra activities are
also important for the overall development of students. Sometimes when a school offers
sports and extra activities parents do not allow their children to participate. Some
students also feel that they do not need the activities, all they need is to concentrate on
their books in many school teachers have to convince parents to permit their children to
participate in activities. Parents feel that extra activities will distract their children from
studies.

Benefits of Getting Good Grades in High School

According to Morin, Amy (2020) The need to get good grades is a common topic of
conversation among teenagers and their parents. Do your talks involve threats or
encouragement? There's a big difference and one may actually be a better approach
than the other.

When talking to your teen about grades, it may be tempting to discuss the dangers of
bad grades. But scare tactics like, "You'll never get into college," or "You won't get a
good job," aren't likely to be effective.

Instead, you can talk about the benefits of getting good grades. By giving real-life
examples, you can provide motivation for your teen to study hard today. There are five
benefits you can use to jump-start your conversation with your teen.

Why Extracurricular Activities Are Important While Studying

According in WES World Education Services (2019) Extracurricular activities are

available to all college students. They typically take place on campus, but they are
optional and do not interfere with your required courses. Extracurricular activities can
include social clubs, sports teams, student government, volunteering, or even an
internship.

Extracurricular activities can add more personality to a résumé and improve the quality
of the student’s overall job application. An employer might be more inclined to request
an interview. For example, if a student was heavily involved in their college debate
team, it might showcase their leadership potential. This means that you showed
initiative to go “above and beyond.” It also means that you have some communications
experience that might become relevant to the position.

Benefits of Extracurricular Activities in Students Development

According to Singh, Ajay (2020) The extracurricular activities have shown several
positive advantages in recent research and studies from teaching them socialization
and team skills to stress management and health benefits.
The extracurricular activities need a regular time dedication and initiative such as being
in a sports team, playing an instrument, participating in a theatre group, or taking an
online course. Letting your kids explore several hobbies can assist prevent them from
partaking in negative activities students sometimes become comprised.

Impressive Extra-Curricular

According to Newman, Shawna (2020) Now that it’s time to start thinking about the
college admissions process, it’s important to consider what you’ll need to put on
applications as well. The college application process can seem daunting, but high
school students can prepare themselves in a fun way--by including the fun student
activities you were involved in during high school. When it comes to your participation
experiences, you don’t want to leave blank space! Use your time wisely to ensure that
you’ll have activities to put down. Keep in mind, however, that colleges are aware when
you add a ton of extra-curricular your junior or senior year.

Amazing Extracurricular Activity Examples for Collage Applications

According to Sarikas, Christine (2020) An extracurricular is any activity you

participate in outside of class. It can be associated with your school, such as a sports
team or club, or completely separate. They also include any jobs or internships you
have had, as well as volunteer work you have performed. Extra-curricular cover a wide
range of activities and interests, from painting to science to helping the homeless and
more.

Extra-curricular let you participate in an activity you enjoy, whether that's playing
football, painting, or another activity. Practicing this activity regularly will help you get
better at it, and you may be able to develop new skills that you find useful in the future.
Doing something you enjoy not only makes you happier but can also give you a much-
needed break from schoolwork.

Do Extracurricular matter in the college admissions process?

xxix
HOLY ROSARY ACADEMY OF LAS PIÑAS CITY
St. Joseph Ave. corner Naga Road, Pulanglupa Dos,
Las Piñas City, 1740

According to Perkins, Leigh (2019) High school students often wonder if

extracurricular matter in the college admissions process. The short answer is yes. But,
before plunging into a longer answer about why they matter and what kinds of
extracurricular activities you should pursue, consider that, for admissions officers,
extracurricular break into the Top 4 of must-haves for an applicant, but they do not
outweigh what you do in the classroom or how you perform on entrance exams.

There is good evidence for basing admission decisions more heavily on academic
performance than on how many hours you volunteered at a triathlon or how many
weekends you devoted to building a homecoming float. According to research cited in
The Atlantic, the students who perform best in college are those who have good grades
in high school. That’s why your transcripts are a better indicator of your college potential
than either your extracurricular activities or your entrance exam scores.

While extracurricular land on the middle rung of the importance ladder and cannot
substitute for good grades and solid test scores, several studies indicate that students
who participate in extracurricular have better attendance, achieve higher SAT scores,
and have higher GPAs than students who opt out of after-school activities.

Synthesis

"In other countries, tried and tested methods are that there are holistic supports.
It can't just be teaching," he said in a forum on higher education hosted by the UP
Center for Integrative and Development Studies on Thursday, October 4. There are
conflicting results, the review of literature does seem to reveal that there is a positive
relationship between participation in extra-curricular activities and student achievement.
The majority of the studies indicate that there is a positive impact on grade point
average (GPA) and scholastic aptitude tests (SAT) results when the students participate
in extra-curricular activities. The literature review also points out several other positive

impacts of participation in extra-curricular activities. Students that are involved in

activities tend to have higher self-esteem, develop better social skills, and build better
relationship with friends and adults. The review of literature also reveals that the
students that participate in extra-curricular activities also live healthier lives and make
better decisions concerning their health. The results vary from study to study. The
literature review points to a need for more studies. There is a need for a study to
investigate the relationship between participation in extra-curricular activities.

Research Design

The researchers chose the Causal- Comparative/ Quasi type of research design
to gather data from the participants. This will determine what is the relationship among
the variables if there is any relationship among them. The selected students who is
active and who participated in extra-curricular activities which is held in the school of
Holy Rosary Academy of Las Piñas of Grade 11 students will be given survey
questionnaires through google forms or in case of error is through messenger and
Gmail. The type of Research Approach used is Qualitative Research.

Sample and Sampling Technique Used

The participants will be selected using a Convenience Sampling technique. This

approach will assist the researcher in narrowing his or her attention to the sample
population of interest. To carry out the convenience sampling technique, the researcher
will concentrate solely on the selected students from Gr 11 ABM participants, as well as
give all participants a fair and equal chance.

Research Instrument

Researchers choose open-ended questions to allow participants to give free-form

answer and can express their opinions. Survey type using google forms will be given to
selected students and few respondents who join the extra-curricular activities. And in
case there are students who can't open google forms, they can even use messenger so
that they won't have any difficulty. Because there is still covid-19 so we can't do the

survey that we will give to each student, we should still apply social distancing or it is
better to just stay at home.

Data Collection Procedure

The researchers will get the total population of Grade 11 ABM students through
their class representatives or class president. The researchers will get the data by their
representatives and distribute the link of google forms to their classmates and ask also
the permission of their adviser. After gathering and investigating their responds the
researchers then analyze their answers.

Data Analysis Procedure

The data gathered from respondents will be analyze through thematic analysis.
Open ended questions will be given to the respondents and later on overview the
behaviors of the respondents and connection of extra-curricular activities to student’s
academic performance.

Statistical Formula Used

From Statistical Tools, you will use the term Statistical Formula Used then. Now,
narrate how you are going to use the mathematical formulas or statistical tools on your
study. Are you going to use Inferential or Descriptive Statistics? For what? Put also the
specific formula and explain the terms/concepts per formula.
