Weekly Testing Requirements

Emergency equipment shall be activated on a weekly

basis.
Activation shall ensure the flow of water to the head(s) of
the device.
The duration of the activation shall be sufficient to flush
all stagnant water from the unit itself and all sections of
piping that are not part of a constant circulation system.
Self-Contained/Portable Equipment shall be visually
checked to determine if flushing fluid needs to be
changed.

Annual Testing Requirements
The recommended testing flow pressure is 207 kPa (+3.4 kPa -0 kPa) [30 psi (+0.5 psi –0.0 psi)]

LOCATION
Safety stations shall be accessible within 10 seconds of
the hazard, approximately 16.8 m [55 ft].
Safety stations should be situated on the same level as
the hazard, and the path of travel should be free of
obstructions.
Emergency equipment locations should be well-lit and
identified with highly visible signs.
All employees exposed to hazardous materials should
receive instruction on the location and proper use of
emergency equipment.
In areas where freezing conditions are possible, units must
be protected from freezing or equipped with freeze
protection.

Annual Testing Requirements

EMERGENCY SHOWER
The showerhead shall be positioned 208.3 to 243.8 cm [82
to 96 in] above the surface floor of the user.
The shower shall deliver a minimum flow rate of 75.7 L/min
[20 gpm] for 15 minutes and produce a water column
50.8 cm [20 in] wide at 152.4 cm [60 in] above the
surface floor of the user, with a clearance of 41 cm [16 in]
from any obstruction.
The shower design shall allow the flushing flow to remain
ON without the need for the operator's hands.
The valve shall be easy to operate, transitioning from
“OFF" to “ON" in one second or less, with the actuator
positioned no more than 173.3 cm [69 in] from the
surface floor of the user.

Annual Testing Requirements

EYEWASH and EYE/FACE WASH

They shall provide a controlled flow to both eyes
simultaneously at a velocity low enough to prevent injury.
Eye/face wash equipment must deliver a minimum of
11.4 L [3 gal.] per minute of water for 15 minutes.
Eyewash-only units must deliver a minimum of 1.5 L [0.4
gal.] per minute of water for 15 minutes.
Outlets shall be protected from airborne contaminants.
The flushing fluid shall cover the area between the interior
and exterior lines of a gauge, positioned less than 20.3
cm [8 in] above the eyewash nozzle.
The flushing fluid flow pattern shall be between 83.8 to
134.6 cm [33 to 53 in] from the surface floor of the user
and a minimum of 15.3 cm [6 in] from any obstruction.
They shall be designed to allow the flushing flow to
remain ON without the need for the operator's hands.
The valve should be easy to operate, transitioning from
“OFF" to “ON" in one second or less.

Annual Testing Requirements

COMBINATION UNIT
The Combination Unit must meet the requirements of an
emergency shower.
The Combination Unit must also meet the requirements of
either an eyewash or eye/face wash, depending on the
application.
Components of the Combination Unit should be capable
of operating simultaneously and positioned in a way that
allows users to utilize the components simultaneously.
