BASIC PARTS OF AN AUTOMOBILE ENGINE

PARTS DESCRIPTION/FEATURE ACTUAL PICTURE


ROOF Protects the vehicle occupant from sun heat, rain,
and snow and also serve as a carriage for extra
baggage and luggage.

WINSHIELD Protects the driver and the passengers seating in


the front seat from strong winds, dust, and smoke
and other flying debris.

WING/SIDE Enables the driver to anticipate what is in the


MIRRORS back of the car or the blind spots, and is very
(LEFT/RIGHT) helpful during parking routines.

WINDSHIELD Enables the driver to wipe unnecessary foreign


WIPER materials in the windshield, especially raindrops
during rainy weather the obstruct vision when
driving.

HOOD A hinged cover usually found at the front side of


the vehicle that covers the entire engine
construction.

GRILLE Aside from its aesthetic purpose , used to protect


the radiator and the engine itself at the same
time allows air to get inside the engine.

HEAD LAMP The primary light source at the front of the


vehicle used to light the road during night time
driving.
BUMPER A structure mainly replaced at the front and at
the back of the vehicle that receives impact in
case of a collision with another vehicle, reducing
damage to the car and occupants.

LICENSE PLATE A plastic or metal sheet with figures that serve as


the identification and registration number of the
vehicle.

INDICATOR/SIDE Indicates the direction of the vehicle as it charge


LIGHT its travel course, either going left or right

DOOR The entrance and exit passage of the vehicle


occupants when going in and out of the car.

WHEELS An essential part of the vehicle as it moves the


car forward or backward

DOOR HANDLE Used to open and close the door whenever the
driver and the passenger get in or out the car.

DOOR WINDOW Protects the driver and the passengers at the


side area from strong winds, dust and smoke,
and other flying debris.

TAIL LIGHT Provide notice to other drivers fro them to see


the rear area of a vehicle and lights on when the
brake is applied.
TRUNK The mains storage compartment for baggage and
cargo usually found at the back of the vehicle

DASHBOARD Located just in front of the driver, this is the


vehicle control panel, displaying the controls and
indicators in operating the vehicle.

REAR VIEW A mirror in front of the driver enabling him to see


MIRROR the rear or back view, especially when parking

SEAT Gives the driver and the passenger comfort when


sitting inside the vehicle.

STEERING WHEEL Gives the car its sense of direction by turning it


either clockwise (turning to the right or
counterclockwise (turning to the left)

HORN Gives a loud sound to signal or inform other


vehicles or pedestrian of the vehicle’s presence.

BRAKE Creates friction when being squeezed to the disc


or rotor of the wheels, thereby slows down or
entirely stops the vehicle.

TIRES A circular-shaped rubber material that encloses


the rim in transferring the car’s load to be
ground, providing traction to the road surface
GEAR STICK A metal lever found beside the driver seat used to
change gears for manual transmission cars or
driving setting for automatic transmission cars.

CLUTCH PEDAL Found on the far left on the floor of the driver’s
side with the brake and throttle on the far right, it
is the pedal stepped by the driver to operate the
clutch.

BRAKE PEDAL Found on the center on the driver’s side floor


with the clutch pedal at the left and accelerator
pedal on the right, it is the pedal stepped by the
driver to make the vehicle slow down or have a
full stop.

Accelerator Pedal Found on the far right on the floor of the driver’s
side, it is the pedal stepped by the driver to make
the vehicle go faster.
