Information of the “Polymers” Talk

Date: 30 May 2011 (Monday)

Time: 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM
Venue: L1, University Science Centre, the Chinese University of Hong Kong
Speaker: Prof. To NGAI (Assistant Professor)
Title: Synthetic Polymers in Modern Life
Language: primarily in Chinese, assisted in English
Material: English

Abstract: Polymers are widely used in daily life in different areas, ranging from plastic bags to fridge interiors.
The speaker reviews various applications of polymers in relation to the structures and properties of the
polymers. Six types of polymers (polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, Teflon, poly(ethylene
terephthalate), and Kelvar) are discussed. New technologies in polymers, such as co-polymers and polymers
from renewable sources are also reviewed.

Speaker Profile: Prof. To NGAI is now the assistant professor in the Chinese University of Hong Kong and
his research focuses on the designing, synthesizing and measuring interactions between polymers, particles
and soft materials.
