Assignment 1 Due date: 08/04/2024
A practical assessment task (PAT) mark in schools is a compulsory component of the
final promotion mark for all candidates offering subjects that have a practical component
and counts 70% mini PAT for 3 first terms. The PAT is implemented across the first three
terms of the school year. This is broken down into different phases or a series of smaller
activities that make up the PAT.
The PAT allows for learners to be assessed on a regular basis during the school year
and it also allows for the assessment of skills that cannot be assessed in a written
format, e.g. test or examination. It is therefore important that schools ensure that all
learners complete the practical assessment tasks within the stipulated period to ensure
that learners are resulted at the end of the school year. The planning and execution of
the PAT differs from subject to subject
The end of year promotion mark will comprise 40% CASS and 60% (Mini-PAT 20%
examination 40%) end of year examination: NB Refer to TECHNOLOGY -National
Curriculum Statement (NCS), curriculum and Assessment Statement Policy CAPS
Senior Phase Grades 7-9 page 40-43.
Design Grade 9 Practical Assessment Task (PAT) that will be done by learners during
firs 3 terms. The following components must constitute the PAT
 Section A and B
 SECTION A (TEACHER GUIDELINES)
 SECTION B (LEARNER TASKS)

As the Technology Subject / Learning Area, PAT is a compulsory national formal

assessment task that contributes towards a learner's final year mark, it is essentially
that this is covered during the course of the year. All the presentation requirements must
therefore be adhered to and, with the exception of the required research, completed at
school, under the supervision of the Technology teacher.
As a Technology Student teacher, you must design PAT scenario as individually and all
the presentations must be your own original work.
NB: Your PAT scenario must combine any two core content knowledge which are
Processing, Structures, Systems and control.
Grade 12 subject with PAT components may be used as the guide on how practical
assessment task is designed.
