ABSTRACT

Globally, more than 150 million women become pregnant with a large percentage requiring

supervised delivery. In response to curb maternal mortalities most accords were held to reduce

and eliminate maternal mortality. However, there is a huge gap in the number of ANC registrants

and the number of supervised deliverys. It is important to ascertain why this discrepancy exists.

This study therefore seeks to determine factors that contribute to low supervised delivery.

A Hospital-based cross-sectional study design was employed to assess factors that contributed to

low supervised delivery among mothers who had delivered once or more in the Abuakwa North

municipality. Structured questionnaires were used to collect information on socio-demographic,

the level of knowledge on supervised delivery, the attitude of health staff towards supervised

delivery and the access to maternal health services among other variables. Descriptive analysis

was performed to determine the level of access to maternal health services, level of knowledge,8

attitude portrayed and sociocultural factors preventing use of supervised delivery.

A total of 80 participants were involved in the study. The knowledge level on importance of

supervised delivery among participants was …….. The access to maternal services facilities were

low (48.7%) and there was a portrayal of positive attitude by the health staff (57.5%) according

to the study participants. It was found that the ………. were significant sociocultural factors that

prevented expectant mothers from using supervised delivery.

It is recommended that the health directorate of the municipality as a matter of urgency lobby

and provide ambulances to help ease accessibility to health care facilities.
