THE HABITAT–‘NIKUNJ’ - ARCHEMIST ARCHITECTS

In the urban scenario where luxury, automated, modern home

designs have become a need and trend, the idea of connecting with
the nature and blending sustainability in design have too become
a necessity. Designed amid a developing area in Bengaluru, Nikunj
is an abode reconnecting man to the nature in the purest possible
way. The house is a poetry in brick and stone designed on a site
of 40’x50’.

The client have a natural interest in eco consciousness and sustainable living and
they wanted it to be reflected in every aspect of the design. A display of natural and
sustainable materials including clay roofs, stone, bricks and wood, describe the design
concept clearly.

The planning of the house revolves around the maximum use of natural light and
ventilation. The strategically placed windows and openings help spaces to get naturally
illuminated and creates a cooling atmosphere. Punctures created in staircase walls and
the ceiling, lets the natural light penetrate through during the day and disperses light
to all areas.

Main Entrance

Internally the planning of the house is kept simple with basic requirements of living,
dining, bedrooms, kitchen and a pooja room. The material selected for these spaces
go hand in hand with the ideology of having spaces that are subtle and not material
heavy.
5
THE HABITAT–‘NIKUNJ’ - ARCHEMIST ARCHITECTS

Green building techniques are implemented in the construction of the house.

1. Filler slabs have been used for the roofs. Apart from reducing cost, these slabs
reduce the consumption of concrete. Here, the use of concrete was reduced by 30%.

2. Porotherm or hollow clay blocks were used for 70% of the wall area to avoid plastering.
They were used in order to reduce usage of river sand. Both these materials help
regulate temperature and keep the interiors cool in summer and warm in winter.

3. Water harvesting is also facilitated in the house. Most of the rainwater is collected
in a separate tank and any excess water recharges the ground through a huge 15 ft
deep recharge pit.

The Client was very keen on building a Reed Bed water filtration, a natural system which
treats the ‘grey water’ from sink, bath, washing machine and hand basins. This recycled
grey water is then used for flushing and gardening with the help of a dual plumbing
system. Apart from using the solar water heaters, a grid connected with 3 Kwh capacity
solar photovoltaic panels were installed which caters to 95% of the power requirement.

As required by client, their ideologies for eco consciousness and sustainable living
reflect in the design of the house as well as the wildlife friendly garden. In current urban
scenario where one hardly gets to see common birds, having a delight to see varied
species of birds and insects, is only a dream. The landscaping around the house is not
just a visual delight but carefully planted with specific plants to attract local species of
birds and butterflies. A custom designed clay pots are integrated into the external stone
façade of the building to attract hole nesting birds like mynas, owls and parakeets.

Staircase

A small flowing water feature oxygenates the fish pond, and there are hollow mud blocks
and clay pots placed all around the garden area, which provides shelter to toads and
other reptiles. Few species of birds like Red Whiskered Bulbuls, Scaly Bellied Munias,
Tailor Birds, etc., have been breeding the garden apart from the permanently resident
common Toads. The project is not only an attempt to create a home for humans but
also for local flora and fauna.
