BY: AKINNIYI ABIMIFOLUWA M. & R.N AREMU OLUWAFOLAKEMI O.
DATE: 7TH March, 2024

OBJECTIVE:
The main objective is to:
1. understand HEPATITIS B
2. create strategies to promote birth dose Hepatitis B vaccination for new born in Nigeria
3. identify keys to note in implementing these strategies

Introduction

Hepatitis remains a significant public health concern in Nigeria. The introduction of birth dose
vaccines for newborns is crucial in preventing vertical transmission and reducing the burden of
hepatitis-related illnesses.

STRATEGIES:
 ESTABLISH OR PARTNER WITH A COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER: Depending on location,we may
establish a community based vaccination center or partner with an existing community health
center. The idea is to have a working facility, and skilled hands, technicians and midwifery.
Working with skilled experts, community health worker (CHW), Traditional Birth Attendant
(TBA), is very paramount here; we may train these folks, guide them while we work hand in hand
with them to reach our major Target, the new born, while ascertaining a functioning vaccination
center.

 MOBILE OUTREACH PROGRAM: Awareness is the mother of the game, organizing outreaches
across different local government of the state, reaching the target audience, which are pregnant
women, and they can be seen in hospital or health centers.

 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Note: the primary audience are in the community health centers, the research facilitator lists different
number of clinic to work with, sends a letter to the various stakeholders in the community for
appropriate permission to always come around for sensitization during the antenatal days; data can
be collected and relationship can be established with the hospital or center and pregnant women to
finally meet with them on delivery day to administer the vaccines to their baby, and every other
referred babies by the TBA or CHW (very essential to train the TBA, CHW and the RESEARCH
FACILITATOR).

TBA stands for Traditional Birth Attendant: they are individuals in the community who have
traditionally assisted women during childbirth. TBA should be trained to identify newborns in need of
vaccination, and referring them to the nearest vaccination center identified or established .

CHW stands for COMMUNITY HEAKTH WORKERS, trained health care providers or volunteer, who
work within the community to provide basic health services, education & support. In this Project their
roles involves conducting vaccination at health centers, and community outreach events, ensuring
that new born receives birth dose vaccines in timely manners.

Both TBA, CHW plays a vital role in ensuring that newborn receive the birth dose hepatitis
vaccination, particularly in location where access to formal health care facilities may be limited They
serve as key links between the health care systems and the community.
Conclusion:

A list of local government, should be worked on, facility should be noted; and partnership document
should be rolled out. Rf (Research Facilitators), Chw (Community Based workers), Tba (Traditional
Birth Attendant), vaccination centers needs to be worked on, training and others should encouraged.
