Contest Guide
What is it?
The Health and Temperance Contest
is a formal event that is expected to
be upheld in formal settings. The 2024
ZEUC Health and Temperance Contest
recognizes the use of all official languages
in Zimbabwe which means our youths
can make use of English or any of our
local languages like Shona. Candidates
however will not be allowed to mix the
languages in their presentations that is
an English speech should not include
any Shona words or the reverse.
There is need to ensure inclusivity in
our Health and Temperance Contests
as such clubs should make an effort to
include persons living with disabilities in
the contest. A moderator shall determine
the use of assistive technology, cue cards
and other tools that the candidates
may require to present their facts to
the audience. Judging criteria shall also
be adjusted taking into consideration
the unique challenges and strengths
of participants with special needs.
Adjustment of time and the use of sign
language are possible ways that can be
used to ensure that those living with
disability are included in the contest.
Candidates living with disabilities will
be allowed to bring other individuals in
the event that they require assistance
in their presentation.
Speeches
The objective of this format is to
allow the youth to present facts on
a chosen topic in a formal address
or discourse delivered to a physical
audience while exhibiting the pub-
lic speaking abilities of the youth.
Candidates are required to make
a formal address or discourse to
the audience presenting the facts
of their chosen topic following the
rules of public speaking. Speeches
should fully explore the subject in a
way that enables the audience un-
derstands it better while ensuring
that the information being given
is factual. Information should be
researched from credible sourc-
es and conspiracy theories are
strongly discouraged as this may
continue to perpetuate false in-
formation. Marks are also going to
be awarded for diction, grammar,
gestures and the use of audio visu-
al aids (including Powerpoint). Be-
low is the time allocation expected
for each club.
Adventurer : 3 minutes
Pathfinders : 4 minutes
Ambassadors and Young Adults : 5
minutes
Social Media
It’s great to see a focus on using social
media to spread the message of health
and temperance among young people.
Here’s a suggestion for the presenta-
tion format:
1. Choose a Topic: Candidates taking
part in this social media category will
also be using the same topics as those
being used by candidates in the phys-
ical contests..
2. Engaging Presentation Styles: Can-
didates can explore various presen-
tation styles such as short speeches,
storytelling, demonstrations, inter-
views, or even creating catchy and
informative infographics, animations
or any other. We await to see how far
creative you can become ...
3. Follow Time Limit: The presenta-
tions should be concise, within three
to five minutes across all clubs, ensur-
ing that the content is engaging and
holds the audience’s attention.
4. Use Social Media Platforms: Upload
the presentations on popular social
media platforms like Facebook, In-
stagram, or TikTok. Consider using
hashtags related to health and tem-
perance to increase reach and en-
gagement. Candidates are to upload
their presentations on the day of their
federation physical contest ...
5. Authentic and Factual Content: Em-
phasize the importance of presenting
factual and scientifically-proven in-
formation. Candidates should avoid
spreading misinformation or conspir-
acy theories.
6. Tagging Requirements: When post-
ing the presentations, candidates
should tag the relevant youth pages,
including the Zeuc youth page, their
respective Conference Youth page,
and their Federation Youth Pages.
7. Evaluation Criteria: Marks will be
awarded based on the number of en-
gagements, creativity of the presenta-
tion, and the content itself. Ensure that
candidates are aware of these criteria
when preparing their presentations.
8. Coordination with Conferences:
Conferences should be responsible
for selecting the best performances
(one candidate per topic) and submit-
ting the videos to the ZEUC Media and
Communication Coordinator for fur-
ther promotion and selection of the
best between conferences presenta-
tions.
By following these guidelines, candi-
dates can effectively use social media
as a platform to spread the Adventist
Health Message to a wider audience
and engage with the youth in an inter-
active and meaningful way.
Research Paper

4. Discuss ways the church can assist
people living with disabilities.

YOUNG ADULTS (22years+)

1. Can one still have a healthy diet on a
low budget?
2. Identifying signs of mental illness is not an easy task. Discuss ways
of identifying early warning signs of mental illness and how best to
assist when those signs are identified.
3. To what extent are dietary supplements necessary for a healthy diet?
4. Discuss stigma towards persons with disabilities.
Research Paper Guidelines
Focus (1-10):
• Make your Research paper clear and
concise. This should be the single
most important takeaway for your
reader. Place it prominently in your
introduction.
• Use headings and subheadings to
break down your writing and guide the
reader through your argument.
• Ensure each paragraph has a clear
topic sentence that supports your main
point.
Development (1-10):
• Use specific examples, anecdotes, or
statistics to illustrate your points.
• Connect your claims to relevant and
credible sources. Cite them accurately
and ethically using an appropriate style
guide.
• Avoid logical fallacies and ensure your
arguments are well-reasoned.
Comprehensiveness and Integration
of Sources - Health (1-20) and Spiritual
(1-20):
• Choose sources that are authoritative,
up-to-date, and relevant to your topic.
• Don’t simply summarize sources;
analyse them and explain how they
support your claims.
• Integrate sources seamlessly into
your own writing, ensuring your voice
