Task –APRIL 6, 2024

Task: Exploring Educational Philosophies Through a Math Lens

Objective: Analyze how different educational philosophies (perennialism,

progressivism, humanism, and postmodernism) would influence the teaching of
mathematics in secondary education for students in the Philippines.

Instructions:

1. Research: Briefly define each of the following philosophies: Perennialism,

Progressivism, Humanism, and Postmodernism.
2. Subject Focus: For each philosophy, identify at least two key characteristics that would
significantly impact how mathematics is taught in a secondary classroom.
3. Philippines Context: Consider the specific educational context of the Philippines. How
might these philosophies be adapted or modified to best suit the needs of Filipino
students?
4. Mathematical Examples: Choose a specific mathematical concept relevant to the
secondary curriculum in the Philippines (e.g., trigonometry, probability). Explain how
you, as a future math teacher, would approach teaching this concept using each of the
four philosophies.
5. Discussion & Reflection:
o Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each approach in the Philippine context.
o Discuss the potential challenges and opportunities that arise from implementing these
philosophies.
o Reflect on which philosophy resonates most with you as a future educator, and why.

Additional Tips:

 Utilize educational resources from the Philippines Department of Education (DepEd) to

understand the national curriculum for mathematics.
 Research the works of prominent Filipino educators or mathematicians for their
perspectives on math education.
 Consider interviewing a current math teacher in the Philippines to gain insights into their
experience and teaching philosophy.
