2023 saw a sharp escalation of the armed conflicts in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which
led to serious violations of human rights. Congolese women and children are exposed to the worst forms of abuse
and exploitation. By the end of December, over 6.5 million people were displaced internally, marking one of the
largest displacement crises globally, second only to Sudan. This crisis stemmed from prolonged conflict, leading
to a dire and protracted humanitarian situation and food insecurity. Rising prices of fuel and fertilizer, along with
climate-related shocks, made it challenging for people to afford basic necessities. Additionally, the country faced
epidemics of measles, malaria, monkeypox, and cholera. Heavy rains also triggered flooding, worsening living
conditions for the most vulnerable.
