HOT WORKS
Activities that may produce enough energy to ignite flammable
atmospheres or combustible materials are categorized as hot work. A
hot work permit applies to work that develops sparks, flames, or heat
sufficient to cause ignition.

Examples of hot work include:


 Open flames, welding, or torch cutting, grinding.
 Using spark producing tools or equipment.
 Abrasive blasting.
 Running internal combustion engines.
 Work on, or near live electrical apparatus.
 Energized electrical devices not rated for the electrical classification of the area.

General Safety Precautions


 Use approved PPE during all welding, cutting, and brazing activities, including when providing
help/assistance.
 Wear leather gloves and body protection, safety boots, arm guards and leg guards (as needed) to provide
protection against heat, sparks, and flying metal particles.Do not wear pants tucked inside boots.
 Remove combustible material from around the work area or protect materials from sparks, slag or heat with
fireproof material or wetting.
 Visually inspect equipment daily. Immediately remove or repair/replace defective or damaged
equipment.
 Provide a portable fire extinguisher(UL) near the hot work area.
 Cover all sewers in hydrocarbon facilities within 23 m(75 ft) of the work area.
 Maintain a trained fire watch during welding and cutting operations and for 30minutes afterwards.
 Do not perform welding, cutting, and brazing in oxygen enriched environments (i.e., an
oxygen concentration greater than 23.5 %).
 Verify the surface, pipeline, or vessel/container to be cut, welded, or brazedhas been drained, cleaned,
and purged to remove all flammable or toxic material (including residue).

Transporting, Moving & Storing Gas Cylinders
 Valve protection caps in place & secure.
 Cylinders hoisted on cradle, sling board, or pallet only.
 No magnets or choker slings.
 Move by tilting & rolling on edge.
 Transport by powered vehicle: secured upright only.
