WATER MANAGEMENT IN S.A.

Seventy percent of the earth's surface is covered by water. Seventy-nine percent of all water on Earth is salt.
Less than three percent of all water is fresh water.
Of the 3% fresh water, only 0.3% is surface water that is easily accessible for us to drink or use in the production
of the food and commodities we need to live. The rest are:
69% - frozen
0.7% - in the atmosphere
30% - underground
Water is a finite source. The same amount of water that was on earth a million years ago is still here and will not
increase. What will need to change is how we utilize this valuable and life-giving resource so that we can
continue to live. We will have to learn not to waste. Of the fresh water we use, :
70% is used for agriculture
20% used for industrial purposes
10% used for domestic and human consumption.
In the production of food, it is essential that we innovate constantly so that new ways can be found to use less
water and to waste less water.
To produce one kilogram of beef, we need 15,000 liters, or 15 m ɜ of water.
To produce one kilogram of rice, we need 3,5000 liters, or 3.5 m ɜ of water.
We are fortunate that innovation in modern agriculture has ensured that we can efficiently monitor the water
content of the soil. This ensures that soil can be effectively irrigated by new systems that waste less water, such
as surface and underground drip irrigation. Yet more than 60% of irrigation water is still wasted due to
inefficiency. The efficient measurement of available water in the root zones of different crops can help curb this
wastage.
