2 o Give each group Worksheet 1.1. Students read the problems and
discuss possible solutions.
o Students share ideas as a class and vote for the best solution for each
problem.
o Give each group Worksheet 1.2. Have students match each problem
with the right response.

Extension
Have groups discuss what advice they would give for each problem. Encourage
students to give their reasons why.

Fast finishers
Using Worksheet 1.3, have pairs write three sentences that each include at least
one phrasal verb, to check for understanding.
o Explain that the phrasal verbs in Worksheet 1.3 can be used to replace
some phrases in the problems (Worksheet 1.1) and responses
(Worksheet 1.2).
o Give each student a copy of Worksheet 1.4 and ask them to find the
phrasal verb calm down. Tell them to look at the first line in Response
B (Worksheet 1.2). Explain that take a deep breath and relax can be
replaced by calm down.

o Put students into pairs. Have them look for phrases in worksheets 1.1
and 1.2 that can be replaced by the phrasal verbs in Worksheet 1.4.
Explain that they only appear once – either in the problems or the
responses: they cannot appear in both.

Alternative activity
Draw the table on the board and give a marker to each pair. Have students come
and write their answers.
o Have each pair write a problem, using Worksheet 1.1 to help them.
Remind students to include some of the phrasal verbs from the lesson.
Monitor and assist as necessary.
o Once completed, have pairs pass their problem to the pair on their
left. Have them think of a reponse (solution) and write it underneath.
o Continue this way until each pair has written a response to each
problem. For larger classes, continue until four or five pairs have
written a response.

o Once the problem is returned to the original pair, have pairs read the
problem and the responses received to the class.
o Note down any errors to write on the board. Elicit corrections from the
class.
