What This Module is About
Listening is an important skill. In communication, listening is effective when
conveying a message. In music it requires time, and focus especially when you are in to a
production work.

This module will teach the learner skill in listening as well as the ability to analyze
music, as well as understand the elements and its types.

The learner demonstrates an understanding of basic concepts and processes in


music and art through appreciation, analysis and performance for his/her self-
development, celebration of his/her Filipino cultural identity and diversity, and
expansion of his/her world vision.

KEY - STAGE STANDARD

The learner demonstrates understanding of salient features of music and art of the
Philippines and the world, through appreciation, analysis, and performance, for self-
development, the celebration of Filipino cultural identity and diversity, and the
expansion of one’s world vision.

What’s New

Art songs and excerpts of opera are two different categories in music. Here, the
learner will understand how music is created along with identity or qualities.
Art songs are usually a solo singer being accompanied by a piano. On the other hand, opera
song is a drama set to music and are performed by actors accompanied by an orchestra.
This module will give the learner the ability to classify the different vocal ranges and
voice types of art songs and opera performers.

What Is It

There are 6 types of voices in music


1. Soprano – the highest voice and usually play the heroines of an opera.
They often sing many arias.
2. Mezzo-Soprano – This is the middle female voice, and has a darker, warmer sound than
the soprano. Mezzos often play mothers and villainesses, although sometimes
they are cast as seductive heroines. Mezzos also play young men on
occasion,
aptly called “pants roles” or “trousers roles”
3. Alto – is the lowest female voice. Alto is a rare voice type. Altos usually portray older
females, witches and old gypsies.
4. Tenor – high, bright and versatile male voice that can be more lyric or dramatic.
5. Baritone – mid-high voice
6. Bass – low and dark male voice

Summary

Music is an art of one’s soul, the expression of the inner being of an individual. Music
now a days have really change in almost all aspect, yet, because it’s an art, we let it be
because music is dynamic. We let it be because music speaks in many languages. It spits
out the culture, norms and tradition of everyone who engages in it. Music even touches our
soul and brings healing. So, no matter what type of music it is, as long as we are into it and
as long as we engage to it, we allow ourselves to reflect our inner self.
