Donations to Warm The Children, a program to provide winter clothing to qualified families and sponsored by the Vilas County NewsReview, are beginning to come in and now reached approximately $16,982 toward its goal of $50,000, according to News-Review Publisher Kurt Krueger. In past years, the publics response to our request for donations, especially in these economically challenging times, has been heartwarming, commented program coordinator Sharina Adams. I am confident that, during the News-Reviews 15th season, our readers will again prove their generosity. For more information about the program or to become a

Members of the Northland Pines Community Garden gathered to close the growing season with Putting the Garden to Rest Fest last Saturday. Gardeners worked throughout the day, cleaning up garden plots, sharing dishes for lunch and making plans for next season. I think our first year was a success, said Community Garden President Kay Her-
shberger. We were able to donate a lot of fresh produce to the Vilas County Food Pantry from the teaching portion of the gardens. The garden filled all 16 plots this summer and had a waiting list of participants, according to Hershberger. Depending on the number of current plot holders and those interested, we may expand to the original approval size of 100 feet by 100 feet, she said. This will be contingent on funding and plot commitments. In addition to cleaning up this seasons plots, garden members worked to prepare the hoop house for an upcoming winter class on gardening at Northland Pines. We intend to have Robin Indermuehles ecology class experiment with growing vegetables in the hoop house this winter, and will have the hoop house in full To GARDEN, Pg. 2B

Freedom to speak
It is happening all over the country. The young, the old, the students, professionals, rich and poor are on the streets voicing their opinions by their peaceful presence. It is their right to do so. Occupy Wall Street is comprised of those who are frustrated with the political process that places the interests of corporations ahead of citizens. It started on Wall Street and within a very short time people all over our country were taking to the streets to peacefully express their opinions and frustration. According to their website (occupywallst.org), this is a leaderless resistance movement with people of many ethnic backgrounds, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that we are the 99% who will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%. We encourage the use of nonviolence to maximize the safety of all participants. Their hope is to create real change from the bottom up. the whole thing. You might be one of the 1% or one of the 99%. You might agree and maybe you have participated in some way. There are as many opinions as there are readers of these words. Hopefully what we all agree with is the right that we, the people, have to express our opinion: freedom of speech. Change typically comes with great duress. Moving to a new state or even a new neighborhood is challenging. Marriage makes new demands as eager as the bride and groom are to have their wedding day arrive. Nothing stays the same. We all know that and yet we resist change. We do not like the unknown even if it is an improvement. Those who are out on the streets of our country are attempting to bring about massive change that, in their eyes, will improve our country in many ways. We here in Wisconsin were in the streets last winter and spring attempting to bring change to our state. As we approach a recall vote for governor of Wisconsin, people will be going door-to-door, sitting in malls and other places gathering signatures for this recall. All of this in an attempt to create a change that in the minds of the participants is also an improvement. Freedom of speech again. You may agree or disagree with all of what these folks are doing. You may wish they would all go home and just

Consider what would have happened if, in the course of our history, the right to protest, to speak up, to make changes was disallowed. Slavery would probably still be a way of life. We might be under the control of England. Women might not have a right to vote or be seen as equal to men. This is what we are, a country with freedom of speech at its very foundation. Colder temperatures and falling snow will soon be upon the North Woods and, though he spends months in preparation before snowfall, George Brunette looks forward to snowmobile season. A volunteer for Three Lakes Trails Inc., Brunette prepares snowmobile trails, working cooperatively with the U.S. Forest Service and the state of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Using chain saws, tractors equipped with scoops and brush hogs, plus allterrain vehicles with winches, he and other volunteers clear trees, brush and rocks from trails. He posts signs in preparation for the snowmobile season and, when the snow arrives, he begins grooming. Brunette is responsible for maintaining and preparing approximately 20 miles of trails from Hiles to Alvin and north to Highway 70. Its an ongoing process. We put in about 1,500 hours per year getting trails ready. We have a map at the groomer shed on which we write sections weve brushed and what parts arent finished, Brunette explained. Before they are opened, Brunette rides the trails with a county coordinator who certifies that trails are ready. Snow groomers are 10 feet wide. Brunette tries to make trails wider so the machine can go one way, then come back the other.
Weve come a long way from when we used bed springs and fencing. The groomers spend about 700 hours taking care of 140 miles every two to three days and nights. We like to have everything ready by Thursday for the weekend warriors, he said. Trails may extend across lakes and through swamps, but are not groomed. Brunette stated, Inexperienced drivers dont realize how wet those marshes are normally. Weve had a drought for the past 10 years, but now weve been getting more rain so theres more moisture. For every inch of rain we get, swamps give up about 4 inches to the lakes. Grass serves as an insulator, so those wetlands dont freeze well, he added. When we pack down the grass with snowmobiles after the first snow when its cold, we repeatedly travel fast and plane over the top so the machines dont sink. We compact it 10 to 15 feet wide, then move on. Weve been doing that for 40 years, he explained. Brunette worked with heavy equipment before retirement, so he fell right into using machinery to clear and groom trails. Ive fixed our machinery in order to return it to the shop and have also helped lots of people whose snowmobiles have broken down. You have to be able to solve problems, concluded Brunette.

The Michigan Public Service Commission (Commission) will hold a public hearing to consider the Sept. 30, 2011 application of Wisconsin Electric Power Company, d/b/a We Energies (Wisconsin Electric) to implement a power supply cost recovery (PSCR) plan and PSCR factor of $0.00533 per kWh to compute its Michigan customers bills for the calendar months of January 2012 through December 2012.
