Nicolets transfer program gives students a head start

Nicolet Area Technical College reported an increase of 5% this fall compared to the fall of 2010 in its university transfer liberal arts program, where students complete the first two years of a bachelors degree at Nicolet. More students are discovering that they can start at Nicolet and then transfer their Nicolet credits to just about any four-year college or university in the state, said Nicolet College President Elizabeth Burmaster. This includes the UWMadison. Nicolet has a unique partnership with the states flagship university that guarantees admission to students in good standing who graduate from Nicolets university transfer liberal arts program, she stated. Nicolet currently has 51 credit transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities that cover hundreds of different majors. These agreements are with all 13 of the four-year UW campuses as well as with numerous private colleges and universities. Nicolet representatives said two of these agreements are with UW-Madison. Both the Connections Program and the Guaranteed Transfer Contract create smooth pathways for North Woods students to study at a world-class university famous for its high admissions standards. Under the Connections Program, incoming freshmen who are accepted into UW-Madison enroll at both Nicolet and UWMadison and enjoy all of the benefits each institution has to offer. This includes receiving a UW-Madison identification card that grants access to UWMadison libraries, recreational facilities, cultural and social events on the UW-Madison campus, and the ability to purchase tickets to UW-Madison athletic events at student rates. Under the Guaranteed Transfer Contract, Nicolet transfer students can move on to UW-Madison if they declare their intent to do so before they earn 30 credits at Nicolet. Under both programs, students must complete at least 54 credits at Nicolet and maintain at least a B average before they transition to UW-Madison where they are granted full junior status. Quality education and affordable tuition make the transfer program very attractive, especially in these challenging economic times, President Burmaster explained. When students do transfer, their Nicolet credits count just the same toward a bachelors degree as those they would have earned starting at the four-year college, she added. Tuition in Nicolets university transfer program is $150 per credit approximately half of what students pay at four-year campuses in the UW system.
Northland Pines Community Garden cleans up plots, prepares for future

Members of the Northland Pines Community Garden gathered to close the growing season with Putting the Garden to Rest Fest last Saturday. Gardeners worked throughout the day, cleaning up garden plots, sharing dishes for lunch and making plans for next season. I think our first year was a success, said Community Garden President Kay Her-
shberger. We were able to donate a lot of fresh produce to the Vilas County Food Pantry from the teaching portion of the gardens. The garden filled all 16 plots this summer and had a waiting list of participants, according to Hershberger. Depending on the number of current plot holders and those interested, we may expand to the original approval size of 100 feet by 100 feet, she said. This will be contingent on funding and plot commitments. In addition to cleaning up this seasons plots, garden members worked to prepare the hoop house for an upcoming winter class on gardening at Northland Pines. We intend to have Robin Indermuehles ecology class experiment with growing vegetables in the hoop house this winter, and will have the hoop house in full To GARDEN, Pg. 2B

Red Cross seeks more blood donors

With Thanksgiving near, the traditional beginning of the holiday season is just around the corner. According to the American Red Cross, there is often a decrease in blood donations during this time of year, while the need for blood remains constant. To help ensure that there is a stable blood supply during the holiday season, the Red Cross depends on volunteer donors to give blood. The organization welcomes individuals to give thanks and give life this season by making an appointment to donate blood or platelets. All blood types are needed to help maintain a sufficient supply for hospital patients. Freedom to speak
It is happening all over the country. The young, the old, the students, professionals, rich and poor are on the streets voicing their opinions by their peaceful presence. It is their right to do so. Occupy Wall Street is comprised of those who are frustrated with the political process that places the interests of corporations ahead of citizens. It started on Wall Street and within a very short time people all over our country were taking to the streets to peacefully express their opinions and frustration. According to their website (occupywallst.org), this is a leaderless resistance movement with people of many ethnic backgrounds, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that we are the 99% who will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%. We encourage the use of nonviolence to maximize the safety of all participants. Their hope is to create real change from the bottom up. LIFESTYLE Eagle Scout project benefits church pantry

Three Lakes High School sophomore Aaron Kohn was already a volunteer at the Personal Essentials Pantry (PEP) at First United Methodist Church in Rhinelander when he decided to offer his services to the pantry for his Eagle Scout project. Distribution had taken place in the churchs basement, but stored products had to be moved for easy access each month before distribution days, a task that required hours of intense labor. The church had decided on a new location for PEP, and Kohn, a member of Boy Scout Troop 672, knew there would be a need for help with the relocation effort. Kohn and his crew spent hours focused on the logistics of the move, painting rooms, setting up shelving and moving and

operation in the spring, said Hershberger. The class last year helped with the gardens in the spring and potted seedlings too. The hoop house, a greenhouse-style enclosure in the community garden area, was constructed earlier this spring with sponsorship from Eagle River Animal Hospital. Its expected to stay warm enough inside to grow certain kinds of plants during the off-season. For its first season, the Community Garden hosted the 10-week program, Got Veggies, which was hosted in cooperation with the YMCA Summer Day Camp. On Tuesdays, youths were taught by master gardener volunteers for one and one-half hours. Students learned about eating fresh fruits and vegetables, planting, caring for worm bins, water and soil conservation and painting plant markers. Hershberger said the Community Garden plans to host monthly meetings in its second year. We will be having a monthly meeting starting in April, she said. This will allow for plot holders to get to know each other. We can also address questions and issues people have about their gardens. Several area businesses and organizations, along with some anonymous donors, volunteered and donated funds to the project, including Muskyland Plumbing, Custom Landscaping, Americas Best Tree Service, Eagle River Animal Hospital, Ministry Health Care, River Valley Bank, Collins Excavating, Wisconsin Public Service, Seed to Seed Edible Garden Project, the UW-Extension and the Vilas County Youth Coalition. Ice Shanty Contest set Nov. 26 in Eagle River

The Eagle River Business Association will host its third annual Ice Shanty Contest in Eagle River Saturday, Nov. 26. Participants will parade through downtown, showing off their Christmas-themed ice shanties. Prizes will be awarded for the best entries. Judging will take place at the beginning of the parade route in the parking lot across from the old Christmas House. Hopefully what we all agree with is the right that we, the people, have to express our opinion: freedom of speech. Change typically comes with great duress. Moving to a new state or even a new neighborhood is challenging. Marriage makes new demands as eager as the bride and groom are to have their wedding day arrive. Nothing stays the same. We all know that and yet we resist change. We do not like the unknown even if it is an improvement. Those who are out on the streets of our country are attempting to bring about massive change that, in their eyes, will improve our country in many ways. We here in Wisconsin were in the streets last winter and spring attempting to bring change to our state. As we approach a recall vote for governor of Wisconsin, people will be going door-to-door, sitting in malls and other places gathering signatures for this recall. All of this in an attempt to create a change that in the minds of the participants is also an improvement. Freedom of speech again. You may agree or disagree with all of what these folks are doing. Horant to share wreath-making skills

The Vilas County Master Gardeners Club will present a demonstration given by Mary Horant of Horants Garden Center and Gardeners Gate of Eagle River on how to make grapevine wreaths. Activities to raise homelessness awareness

Frederick Place homeless shelter in Rhinelander has now been open for nine months. Representatives from Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing Inc. (NATH) have reported that the house has never been empty since it opened Jan. 31. Frederick Place has been home to 40 males (four of whom were veterans), 27 females and 12 children, for a total of 2,822 shelter nights. The average age of residents, including the children, has been 35 years old, while the average length of stay has been 38 nights. In addition to the 80 residents who have stayed at Frederick Place, another 79 individuals in need of shelter had to be turned away due to lack of available beds. The shelter has had residents from all five of the counties that it serves including Oneida, Vilas, Lincoln,Langlade and Forest counties. Shelter representatives stated that numerous successes of former residents validate the importance of developing goals and working on self-sufficiency plans with their case manager at the shelter. NATH reported that community support has been significant to the shelters success. Between 700 and 1,000 pounds of food are donated to Frederick Place each month to help with the meals. Approximately 95% of the evening meals have been prepared, shared or donated by area businesses, faith communities, families, individuals and other organizations. Many anonymous and inkind donations support shelter operations and maintenance. Volunteers help in the house as relief shelter staff and provide their time as drivers to transport residents to various appointments and job interviews. The yearly operating budget for Frederick Place is approximately $205,000. The breakdown per resident is $40 a day, $280 a week or $1,200 for one month to provide food, shelter and professional case management to residents who can stay up to 90 days, as long as they are progressing on their goals developed in their self-sufficiency plan. NATH will participate in various activities during the month of November to promote national hunger and

Colder temperatures and falling snow will soon be upon the North Woods and, though he spends months in preparation before snowfall, George Brunette looks forward to snowmobile season. A volunteer for Three Lakes Trails Inc., Brunette prepares snowmobile trails, working cooperatively with the U.S. Forest Service and the state of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Using chain saws, tractors equipped with scoops and brush hogs, plus allterrain vehicles with winches, he and other volunteers clear trees, brush and rocks from trails. He posts signs in preparation for the snowmobile season and, when the snow arrives, he begins grooming. Brunette is responsible for maintaining and preparing approximately 20 miles of trails from Hiles to Alvin and north to Highway 70. Its an ongoing process. We put in about 1,500 hours per year getting trails ready. We have a map at the groomer shed on which we write sections weve brushed and what parts arent finished, Brunette explained. Before they are opened, Brunette rides the trails with a county coordinator who certifies that trails are ready. Snow groomers are 10 feet wide. Brunette tries to make trails wider so the machine can go one way, then come back the other.
Weve come a long way from when we used bed springs and fencing. The groomers spend about 700 hours taking care of 140 miles every two to three days and nights. We like to have everything ready by Thursday for the weekend warriors, he said. Trails may extend across lakes and through swamps, but are not groomed. Brunette stated, Inexperienced drivers dont realize how wet those marshes are normally. Weve had a drought for the past 10 years, but now weve been getting more rain so theres more moisture. For every inch of rain we get, swamps give up about 4 inches to the lakes. Grass serves as an insulator, so those wetlands dont freeze well, he added. When we pack down the grass with snowmobiles after the first snow when its cold, we repeatedly travel fast and plane over the top so the machines dont sink. We compact it 10 to 15 feet wide, then move on. Weve been doing that for 40 years, he explained. Brunette worked with heavy equipment before retirement, so he fell right into using machinery to clear and groom trails. Ive fixed our machinery in order to return it to the shop and have also helped lots of people whose snowmobiles have broken down. You have to be able to solve problems, concluded Brunette.

YMCA to offer day camps

In light of a school holiday slated Monday, Nov. 14, the YMCA of the Northwoods Eagle River Branch has announced that it will provide a day camp for children ages 5 to 12. The Schools Out camps will be held when area schools are not in session and will begin at 6:30 a.m. and run until 5:30 p.m. at the YMCA of the Northwoods Eagle River Branch. Students should take a lunch. Participants will receive a midmorning snack and an afternoon snack. Students also should dress appropriate for the weather. The YMCA has a licensed facility and a trained staff ready to provide children with a day-camp experience. The program will include gym time, board games and craft activities for children to participate in throughout the day. The cost of the full-day program is $23 for members and $27 for the general public. To ensure a spot for Monday, Nov. 14, participants should sign up by Thursday, Nov. 10. LIFESTYLE Wildlife center announces canoe winner

Northwoods Wildlife Center recently celebrated the official end of its summer season with what has become an annual tradition when the winner of the handcrafted wooden canoe was drawn. The canoe has been spotted all summer at various events around the North Woods. The winning ticket was purchased by Chuck Gross of Rhinelander. Gross, a craftsman himself and owner of Chuckn Stones Construction, purchased his ticket at St. Germains Pig in the Pines Rib Fest. The wildlife center raffled a number of handcrafted canoes over the years as a fundraiser to help offset the growing costs associated with wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, and the environmental education programs it delivers throughout the year. The canoe raffle is always a nice fundraiser for us. The canoes are always so incredibly beautiful that folks cant help but take an interest, said Diane Chart, executive director at the center. We make some money from the raffle proceeds, but more importantly, we get the

I assure everyone that the canoe is waterworthy and that some past winners are using the canoe; however, there are others displaying it as a work of art, said Chart. The wildlife center is

Childrens book series stems from museum storyboards

Local artist Marilyn Annin will introduce a series of childrens books about the history of the North Woods. The books have been printed directly from the original story boards created by Annin for exhibits mounted at NorthernWaters Museum in Land O Lakes. The storyboards were displays for children to read while their parents were involved with the more sophisticated exhibits. Working with Mary Sethness and Bill Stout, both of Watersmeet, Mich., Annin was able to publish her storyboards in a book format for the public. This series of four small books will be packaged in a portfolio called Up North Stories. The first book, Gillis the Glacier, is the story of the Ice Age land formations in the Land O Lakes area. The first of two book signings is scheduled Friday, Nov. 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Artistree Gallery in Land O Lakes. Forest Lake Country Store will host a book-signing event Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The portfolio will sell for $29.95. Proceeds from the books will benefit the Land O Lakes Historical Society and Land O Lakes Area Artisans Inc. Riverstone to host chef demo, luncheon

Riverstone Restaurant & Tavern will host a ladies-only event Saturday, Nov. 19. Gathering time will begin at 11 a.m. at the restaurant, located on Railroad Street near the bridge in downtown Eagle River. The event will include food and wine with cash bar available and registration for a gift basket valued at $100 to be awarded to an attendees. At 11:30 p.m., guest chef Cyndy Lagerhausen will demonstrate one of her seasonal recipes just in time for Thanksgiving menu planning. Lagerhausen is the owner of FoodStyle Cooking School. The school offers a variety of classes which feature Asian cooking, entertaining, baking and desserts, and include demonstration and tasting for all levels of cooking experience. After graduation from culinary school, Lagerhausen owned and operated Discriminating Taste Catering in the Chicago, Ill., area. She also attended the Winona School of Photography. During her demonstration at Riverstone, she will speak about what food styling is and her experiences in this career. Wine director Ron Meinholz will provide commentary on each wine poured and will offer discounts for purchase of the wines tasted. Other features offered will be discounts on roasted garlic grapeseed oil, a signature offering for diners at Riverstone, and gift card sales. On this day only, with every $50 in gift cards purchased, a free $10 card will be issued or added to any individual card sold. Specials on gift card sales, grapeseed oil and wines will continue through Saturday evening dinner. Nicolet College to offer precollege academies

Citing success with its Environmental Science Academy for ninth- and 10thgraders, Nicolet Area Technical College will now put the finishing touches on two more pre-college academies for early next year that will focus on engineering and health occupations. Both academies, designed for high school freshmen and sophomores, will run simultaneously for five consecutive Saturdays, Jan. 28, Feb. 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Nicolets Rhinelander campus. Each academy is designed to teach students engineering and health-care skills and also give them a chance to explore careers in these fields along with learning skills they will need to be successful in college. Everything will be designed around hands-on activities that are fun for students, said Susan Kordula, academy coordinator and director of admissions and PK-16 Pathways at Nicolet College. Students in the Engineering Academy will learn the engineering design process to define, build and test solutions to a variety of engineering problems. Projects will teach students how to apply math and science skills and demonstrate the importance of communication when working as an engineer. Careers theyll explore include those in the aerospace, electrical, manufacturing, architectural and mechanical engineering fields. Those in the Health Occupations Academy will learn about and get to practice a wide variety of basic medical procedures on Nicolets new, high-tech patient simulator known as Meti-Man. This state-of-the-art computerized mannequin can re-create hundreds of medical scenarios. Students will use criticalthinking skills to work through different medical situations in a safe learning environment. Tuition for each academy is $487, however, a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction will cover all tuition costs for students who are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Annual lutefisk dinner planned

Pioneer Lake Lutheran Church will hold its 30th annual Christmas lutefisk and Swedish meatball dinner Sunday, Dec. 4, with seatings at 4 and 6 p.m. at the church, located at 3675 Church Road in Conover. The menu will include lutefisk with drawn butter and milk gravy, Swedish meatballs with brown gravy, boiled potatoes, green beans amandine, cranberry sauce, beet pickles, lefse, Swedish rye bread, dinner rolls, assorted pies and beverages. Group prepares to support troops

The Eagle River Area Troop Support Group has announced that the deadline to ship holiday packages overseas to active military personnel is near. Folk dance, concert slated Nov. 13

The Second Sunday Folk Dance will host a concert performance by the longtime duo Mustards Retreat Sunday, Nov. 13, at Fortune Lake Camp, located on Highway 2 between Iron River, Mich., and Crystal Falls, Mich. The duo consists of David Tamulevich and Michael Hough, who have traveled the folk music circuit for 35 years. White Water (Dean and Bette Premo) are the hosts of the Second Sunday concert/ dance events that also feature dance music by The Front Parlor Dance Band. All events will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Admission is $7 per adult and children younger than 15 are free. Season tickets for all scheduled events are $35. Tickets are available at Ben Franklin store in Crystal Falls; The Music Tree in Iron Mountain, Mich.; Central Arts and Gifts in Iron River; and at the door. Doll club elects officers, sets next meeting

The Enchanted Doll Club of the Northwoods will hold its next monthly meeting Saturday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. at Olson Memorial Library in Eagle River. Arlene Vlies will present a program on Becassine, who began as a cartoonlike character in the French magazine La Semaine de Suzette. The Becassine character became so popular that several different companies made her into a doll. Officers for the 2011-12 year were elected at the clubs last meeting. The new officers are Arlene Vlies, president; Sally Young, vice president; and Judy Wainwright, secretary-treasurer. The officers will assume their duties at the November meeting. Octobers meeting included a presentation by Beth Krause of the Dollers of Southeast Wisconsin Doll Club about the Rose Percy Luncheon Event scheduled in May 2012, in Milwaukee The luncheon will explain the history of the Rose Percy doll and will feature an exhibit of her extensive wardrobe. Proceeds from the luncheon will be donated to a Milwaukee Veterans Affairs hospital that conducts research on spinal injuries. Oneida Clerk of Courts office to end processing of passports

Effective Jan. 1, 2012, the Oneida County Clerk of Courts office will no longer accept passport applications. According to Oneida County Clerk of Circuit Court Brenda Behrle, the costs of accepting passport applications outweigh the benefits. In order for this office to maintain its designation status as a passport acceptance facility, the requirement for annual employee recertification, training and processing applications is found to be cost-prohibitive, she said. Community Learning Center to host holiday cooking classes

The Three Lakes Community Learning Center will host two holiday cooking classes Tuesdays, Nov. 15 and 22, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in Room 208 at Three Lakes School. The Badger State Girl and Boy representatives from Three Lakes High School will speak to the group. Christmas Fest slated this Saturday

The Plum Lake Womans Club will hold its Christmas Fest Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sayner community building. Homemade soups and chili made by members of the womens club, along with brats, sauerkraut, hot dogs and homemade pies provided by the Friends of the Plum Lake Library, will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and St. Marys Altar Society will hold a cookie sale. Holiday shopping will include handcrafted items from womens club members and Friends of the Library. Breakfast with Santa set at Phelps School

The Phelps eighth-grade class will host its Breakfast with Santa fundraiser Saturday, Dec. 10, from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Phelps School commons area. Menu choices will include pancake, scrambled egg or a combination meal of both, along with sausage links and either milk or coffee. Advance tickets will cost $5 for either the pancake or scrambled egg meal and $7 for a combo meal. A limited amount of tickets will be available at the door and will cost $8 for any meal. Bake sale items and photos with Santa will also be available for purchase. Santa will give a free gift to those visiting him. Class of 2016 students Lexi Lucas, Nicole Fiebrantz, Shania Warchol and C.J. Crawford will sell advance tickets. Annual Hunters Supper planned at Phelps Congregational Church

To celebrate the deer hunting opener, Phelps Congregational Church will host its annual Hunters Supper Saturday, Nov. 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. The family-style dinner will include meatballs, potatoes and gravy, vegetables, coleslaw and pie. Donations of $10 for adults and $5 for youths younger than 10 will be accepted at the door. Children younger than 5 will eat free. The church is located on Highway 17 in Phelps. The Michigan Public Service Commission (Commission) will hold a public hearing to consider the Sept. 30, 2011 application of Wisconsin Electric Power Company, d/b/a We Energies (Wisconsin Electric) to implement a power supply cost recovery (PSCR) plan and PSCR factor of $0.00533 per kWh to compute its Michigan customers bills for the calendar months of January 2012 through December 2012.
