Pink Floyd is a British rock band founded in London in 1965.

Considered a cultural
icon of the 20th century and one of the most influential, successful, and acclaimed
bands in the history of popular music, they gained popularity within the
underground circuit thanks to their psychedelic and spacey music, which evolved
over time into progressive rock and symphonic rock, acquiring the popularity they
are remembered for today. Pink Floyd is known for their philosophically rich songs,
experimental sound, innovative album covers, and elaborate live performances. They
have sold over 280 million albums worldwide, with 97.5 million in the United States
alone, making them one of the best-selling bands in history. The original lineup
included drummer Nick Mason, keyboardist and vocalist Richard Wright, bassist and
vocalist Roger Waters, and lead guitarist and vocalist Syd Barrett. Barrett's
erratic behavior, caused by excessive drug use (especially LSD), led to his
departure, and David Gilmour j
oined the group. The quartet of Mason, Wright, Waters, and Gilmour established the
definitive lineup. Waters became the band's primary lyricist, while Gilmour and
Wright took on the musical composition. Pink Floyd recorded many commercially
successful albums during this time, including "The Dark Side of the Moon" (1973),
"Wish You Were Here" (1975), "Animals" (1977), "The Wall" (1979), and "The Final
Cut" (1983), which are among the most influential in the history of popular music.
