One day God made the man, with a heart, so that he

could love. He also decided to give the man two legs to walk
on , so that he could look after the ones he loved.
He gave the man a head, with a brain inside , and
this brain was supposed to help the man think about the
things he and the ones he loved would need, and with this
brain he could find ways to acquire everything for himself
and others.

Well, God decided to give man a mouth and a voice so that

he could use his brain to say nice things to
other men, and so he could teach what other men didn’t know
yet. And finally he gave the man a woman, that also had a heart
to love and feel, legs to walk with ,
and a brain to think about all one needed to
live in peace and for a life worthwhile living.

before he gave the man and the woman a place to

live, he showed his love for them, so that they could
learn how to love the others in the same way. And he
told them that they should love each other and everyone that
they would come to know, and he said, “When you return, I’ll be
waiting for you”.

So the man and the woman left the the place God gave
them. And God gave them many friends and animals. with
his brain, the man built a house, and lived in it
with his “wife” that he loved with the heart God gave
him.

His friend decided to also make a house, but he made a

bigger one. So the man walked to the forest with the
legs that God gave him and brought more wood to make a
bigger house than his neighbor’s, and said, “Now I have a
bigger house than yours”. And the woman God gave him got angry
because he didn’t think about the children that needed
food, because he was building a bigger house. And all the other
men also went to the forest to make a bigger
house, and bigger and bigger houses.
24
25

And one day the forest died, and the animals went away,
and the men and their families had nothing else to
eat. And he cried with the voice God gave him, and
with his heart he felt pain, and he couldn’t walk
with his legs, and his brain couldn’t think about
anything because he was hungry. And his “wife” felt sorry
for him, because she loved him and helped him think
of something to do. But she needed help, and she
asked the other men that were all in the same situation
for help. And they all thought together and loved one
another for the help they gave one another, and they finally
felt the love God had for them, and planted a new
forest, and the animals came back and loved the men for
planting a new forest with them, and they ate again and were
able to use their brains again, and each man decided to take
animals home.

But some wanted more than others, and they ate all the
animals, and one more time built big houses, and the forest
died once again. And the men became angry, then hungry, then
sad, and lonely in their beautiful houses, because they
didn’t have anyone to talk with their lonely voices
about love.

So finally the men returned to God

with their legs and their brains, but no heart, because
they had forgotten how to love and they couldn’t feel God’s
love, because they didn’t have hearts. So they died.

the children? They just didn’t listen to her. They didn’t

When I was a child, I heard people tell me many things

someone named “God”. I didn’t quite understand but,
that time, I was very young and didn’t pay much attention
anyone. They told me he was very, very nice, and I believed
it. But when I didn’t eat all my lunch, they said God would get angry
me, and I just couldn’t understand why God would want me to
eat something as terrible as beets vinegar!! I felt I would
get sick if I ate them, and surely God wouldn’t want me to get sick...
I wished everyone to eat the beets, so I didn’t have to.

Sundays the adults would take me church. The

words people said there had some kind magic because they always
made me sleep. And they said God would look down and see me sleeping
and become angry. So I never really understood if God was good or bad
when I was a child. I grew ,
people tried to tell me that people who went church were
good, because they knew everything God. So I went to church
those people there weren’t any people different
me, not better nor worse.

I sat down the front row. The man that was reading the
Bible sounded so wonderful, but I knew him. He had killed his
neighbor’s dog because it made too much noise...

night I would look the Bible, and I couldn’t

understand most it. The words were too difficult. I went
hundreds churches and nobody knew how to tell me
how I could find God. They said I had to pray, but would he talk
me if I prayed? He never did. Some people got angry
me because I asked too many questions they couldn’t answer.
So I stopped going churches to find God. Specially because
all churches told me he was there and not the other church, so
how would I know the right church and the wrong church?
And I finally stopped looking God. all, I didn’t
even know how to think Him.

One day, I sat alone the beach the evening

watching the sun go down. The only noise I could hear was the water
and the wind. The sky had so many colors I couldn’t count them.
52
53

The sea seemed to be dancing a waltz the song the wind

seemed to be singing. The sun slowly went the sea and the
sea became golden. I had never realized how perfect things were
nature that moment. It looked something like a
dream. And I finally “felt” God. Nothing anyone ever said
me God showed me who He was like the silence
nature did. His eyes could be that sky, His arms could be
the wind, His love could be the warm sun, and His heart as clear as
the sea that waltzed the sound His voice...

Some people say that little children remind them

angels. But when you have one or two “little angels”
home, you begin to think that angels don’t exist. If you
have a cat, I’m sure it’ll agree you. Some children have
such a sweet smile, except the smile they give you when they
“accidentally” put toothpaste your slippers while you were
taking a bath.

When we think angels, we think soft music and

quiet places. A house where there is a little child is only quiet when
the sweet little child is doing something he or she is not supposed
to. Little children look like angels when they are sleeping,
you leave the room and see the mess he or she left
you clean falling asleep. So you
clean the house as quietly as possible, therefore slowly, and that
takes time. you finished, you have to go the laundry
take the cat out the washing machine, give him
a chance rest, and prepare something the little
angel he wakes again.

And while you fix the delicious food that you know your little
angel isn’t going to like, you smile and think how sweet he is
close your nephew who likes to write the furniture.
Suddenly you hear something. It must be “little angel”, because the
cat hid the couch. “Sweet little thing, he doesn’t even cry”,
you think. course, he was very busy mixing his baby oil and
his baby powder the carpet the house that isn’t even
yours! So you get very angry and hit his little hand(that sometimes
seems so big!), and either he looks you and cries or looks
afraid, and next time he throws his shampoo instead.

Time to eat. you managed making him eat two spoons

the delicious food one hour, you smell something
very familiar those who have little angels like you. Time
to change his clothes. “I wonder if little angels do this too...”, you
think.

59
60

He seems to be growing so fast (sometimes not fast enough). He is

learning how to talk. He asks you 9327 questions a day, usually
followed “Why??”. That’s the hard part. When you think you
are to become completely crazy, he gets your lap
and gives you the sweetest hug, and turns you and says, “I
love you Mommy”, that’s when you understand why they call little
children angels.

If we only knew just how much we have our hearts,

maybe it would be easier to live others
misunderstandings. Wouldn’t it be easy if you could notice that the
person that sat next you the bus could be a
wonderful friend? That he or she likes the same things you do?

If we only knew just how long it takes a tree to grow,

would we cut it? If we knew what the flowers feel when we pick them,
maybe we wouldn’t. Sometimes it seems we don’t know what we are doing.
fact, I don’t think we ever know what we are doing.
Otherwise, the world wouldn’t be hungry.

I think that ourselves, we are all very lonely. We seem to

be kind lost some sort strange world.
We don’t know where the wind comes nor do we know where it’s
going . We never know what to say if someone says something
good or bad to us; the words usually come out we know it.

Sometimes we don’t feel very good who or how we are,

and we change our clothes or buy a new car, but that doesn’t change
anything us. If you look a little baby
five months, you will notice that sometimes she or he looks
one hand and the other hand, trying to feel what he
or she is doing.

I go the mountains and look the valley, and even

there alone, I don’t feel free, because I know I have to go home some
day. I’m not free stay and I’m not aware
what my hands do when I get angry. Sometimes I feel so ugly, and it’s
usually because I’m a bad mood, therefore I don’t really
feel myself, otherwise I wouldn’t feel ugly. Or am I ugly and I can’t
feel it? Have you ever felt yourself when you look
someone you don’t like? If we learned how to feel things, maybe we
would prefer to feel a flower our hands instead
a gun. Who knows? If we only knew how to feel ourselves
others, we wouldn’t feel so lonely.

When we learn how to feel our hands and our hearts, what
other hands and other hearts feel, the wars will finally end.

time to time man has been looking

something that is able to explain a reason his
existence. He has searched in all the corners the
world. He has read all the books to find the meaning
life.

He looks the mirror and doesn’t understand who he

is and where he’s going. He has looked space, and
the deep blue sea some kind
clue that will lead him to understand himself.
He studied history and science. He went the moon and
came home without a clear answer his question. “Where
am I?”, he thought. “Who am I?” Why am I here?”, like a child
that is taken a strange place and is left there alone
sometime. Maybe he’ll cry. After some time, he will
walk around the place opening and closing doors he
discovers there is nothing there. So he will probably sit
a corner and think. He will begin playing with his
hands or his feet and forget all where he is. He will
notice amazed that he can make his fingers move the way he
wants them to move. He can make his eyes see what he wants to
see, and if he feels pain, it will probably be because he
hurt himself his own hands. So he won’t hurt himself
anymore.

We have been searching so long so many places,

and we never noticed how our fingers moved when we wanted
them to. We don’t know our strength but we know how strong
others are. Is someday we learn how to look ourselves,
maybe we will find the answer, understand who we are and
undestand “Him”, who made us be this way.

When we learn how to understand our own meaning, the

long search will come an end.

Ever the beginning man has been wondering his

mind. One the aspects that has greatly interested him are the
different ways which he is able to communicate other
people.

Man created languages to be able to communicate himself

orally others. Later he invented graphic signs and
was able to write his fellow men. As time went
inventions like the telegraph, the telephone,
radio, television, fax, computer and so on greatly simplified
communication. All these ways reaching his fellow
human beings were the result the use of the brain,
man’s conscious and mechanic part of the mind. They are means
of communication that can be heard, seen and physically felt.

But some man’s most brilliant ideas(including

many inventions) are felt rather than rationally made up. This
is where telepathy, so many other faculties, comes
. There are two basic kinds telepathy: one is
done mental harmonization and is related the
brain; it consists using the same wave length of the
brain that another person is using and has been greatly studied
scientists; the other one is done
Mental projection and is based the fact that all
human beings are connected to one another a
common conscience.

The second kind of telepathy might be the first step a

further evolution man, where all our previous
inventions become unnecessary.

There are many different holidays each country, and

there is one holiday which most countries celebrate, which is
Christmas.

When you ask a person what she thinks Christmas, you

may get all different kinds answers, nice ones and not
very nice ones. Mothers will probably think: “Christmas means I’ll
have to spend a whole week the kitchen!”, and fathers
may think: “There goes all the money I saved to buy a new car...”,
or even, “I hate wearing that hot Santa Claus suit! Why me!!”.

Shops and stores love Christmas, them it

means great business, and the poor and lonely
Christmas is most the time a reason to be sad.
other words, Christmas has lost its true meaning.
Unfortunately, the world today only believes Christmas if
it comes with a lot presents and food.

I don’t think I need to mention the meaning

Christmas, the name says it itself. It tells
a story someone who came to the world to leave us
a message. But apparently most us didn’t quite
understand it fact, I don’t think anybody did, and
the time the message got us, it was changed
people who read it us. So we don’t even know
what the message was . All the we know is that he
was a good man, and that his words were worth gold, too good
most people to understand, and maybe too
simple people to believe . But he left us this
holiday which, English, was given his
name.

The purpose this holiday may be to try to

understand why he came or why we should be the
people we love this day. It certainly has nothing to do
money. It may have to do
giving and taking, but nothing to do “presents”. It may even
have to do special presents, but the kind presents
that aren’t available shops or stores; they’re probably not

102
103

available most us because we don’t really know the real

meaning love. least, not like He loved.
So anyway, we have something to think next
Christmas besides Santa Claus and the turkey potatoes
Mom makes.

Christmas or wether it’s not!!!

So you have been studying English

one hundred and fifty years and sometimes it seems you don’t
know anything, doesn’t it? You study, and study and try to
memorize these crazy prepositions, but you never seem to know
them all. Ugh!! As Charlie Brown would say.

When you think you know everything you need, someone

introduces you a foreigner and tells the foreigner that
you speak English and you have this terrible feeling that
suddenly you don’t remember anything, that you just forgot
everything. This foreigner begins talking you
a gleam his eyes because he finally
found someone who knows English. You look his
mouth moving faster and faster and you feel your brain
getting emptier and emptier...You become pale, your legs feel
weak...and the floor seems to be getting closer. Then,
a moment, you notice that the middle
everything he said you understood one or two words, so you
pay attention and understand a few more, when finally you more or
less think you have understood what he was talking . Your
legs become stronger, the color your face slowly starts
coming back and the floor didn’t get any closer. Let me give you a
suggestion, breathe in deeply and then breathe out and say: “You
will have to speak slowly so I can understand you”.

What you have to know is that there are many kinds

English: Brazilian English, American English, Italian
English and so .
Each person will speak English the way he learned it. And when
you learn English as a second language, course you will
have a Brazilian(Italian,Spanish..) accent your English,
even if you studied the best English or American
teacher town.
order you to have a British or American
accent, you have to live one these countries
a while (that means more than only spend a couple
months). No English school will be able to teach
you how to understand an Italian English and a Spanish
English and so . To acquire the ability
understanding someone who speaks English quickly you have to
spend time
109
110

people who speak English, listen songs

English, listen all your English tapes,
watch movies English reading the legend,
other words you have to practice!!!
It isn’t important first that you understand
every word the person is saying, it is more important that
you understand what he is talking , the context. If you
like to read, then find some books English the
library concerning matters you like and read and if you don’t
like to read, try learning how to like reading
( least sometimes)!

Oh, and the prepositions, you’d better memorize them

or else you won’t go Advanced Nine! Just Kidding...Don’t
memorize them, learn them. Try to relate the preposition the
verb, and it will be easier. And if someone introduces you a
foreigner that speaks fast, either speak Portuguese
him as fast as you can to see if he also gets pale and weak,
or you ask him to “please speak slowly”!! Don’t let your English
depend only the method and the teacher, make it depend
you!

I think I’m getting old, or maybe crazy, who knows? Maybe

I’m not the only one. one time people bought this or
that thing because it was style. Then came a rebellious
generation who said they didn’t like to follow a style: they
dressed different the people style, but they all
dressed the same themselves...
They had their own “style”...

So years went and nowadays we see different kinds

styles. The latest style now is girls and
boys to look the same; that way when you meet someone, you
many times have to guess “what” you are talking to. Sometimes
the voice doesn’t help much. Some teenagers say they hate to
wear clothes that are style and that’s why they
wear clothes like their friends do...
Am I making myself understood? Many us say we
don’t care what people think us, but we try to
always be the latest style so people won’t think we are
stange. It seems we are always living others, and
not enough ourselves. But others don’t pay our bills
and solve our problems, why should we live them?

It used to be nice to go a wedding to see two

friends yours getting married, nowadays we go to see
what everybody is wearing!!!! I wonder if being honest
oneself will ever be the latest style? I keep
thinking if I will ever be able to go out and not worry
absolutely what people may think my
clothes!!! It seems we are always hiding our clothes,
our painted hair, our makeup. Men go academies to
look like Hulk, and girls go beauty parlors to look like
Marilyn Monroe. They could try looking like themselves once
a while...

When a man marries a girl that wears a lot makeup,

I wonder if he is going to recognize her the morning
or the shower: “Who are you?! What are you doing
my bed?!” And when a girl marries a man who looks
like James Dean but behaves like Odie(Garfield’s dog friend),
that’s a serious matter... Who is behind all that makeup and
all those muscles? You never know.
114
115

If you aren’t style you are weird. Maybe if being

weird were style, we wouldn’t have to worry so much
clothes, muscles and cars and start worrying
the hungry children the world and the
wars, and perhaps even find a solution them, for we
would have a lot time to think this.
Being strong and beautiful is temporary, being yourself is
everlasting(forever).
Now, let me put my makeup because it’s almost
time to go the academy...

It’s not easy to be a teenager. Most us know

that. Now imagine a teenager’s Mother or Father!

Being a teenager means your voice begins changing when

you are a boy, and it usually changes the middle
a sentence, just when you’re talking to a pretty
girl. If you are a girl, strange things start happening
your body, and you look very weird the
little dresses you are used to wearing, and it seems the
ribbon your mother put your hair makes you look very
stupid.

You don’t know if you are an adult or a child, therefore

you don’t know if you play your toys or sit
the living room your parents’ friends and
talk politics. Your mother makes you nervous when she
says you are her little baby or your dad says you are almost
a big boy now. So you begin hating your clothes, your school,
your dog, your bedroom and your neighbor. You tell your
teacher she looks like a frog, put a snake in your sister’s
purse and threaten to run away from home. That’s all normal
teenagers. The world doesn’t seem enough a
teenager. “Why is it so weird?”, he thinks while he paints
his hair purple to look different.

You know a teenager far away when he’s smoking

because he usually holds the cigarette like a pencil, which
is the only object that size that his hands know. Those
are the times you try your first drink, and second, and
third...and sleep the bathroom, or better, the
toilet. No problem, Mom goes there and cleans everything. Mom
will talk the principal and apologize
the teacher being called a frog, and oh, she won’t
tell your Dad she saw you smoking( least she
talks to you).

Being a teenager is stealing your Dad’s car, your

brother’s new jeans and your Mom’s money to go a
party. Then when you arrive home the morning, everybody
is waiting you looking very angry, and you just
don’t understand why! So you decide to run away, but not now,

There are times life that you feel the need to

understand the behavior some human beings. It’s very
difficult to understand why people do what they do and what
they get that, or even how little some
people sell themselves.

Almost everyone has probably already had a friend who

did or said this or that you your back,
and if you have, then you know how awful this feels. Maybe
you are one those people who spend months
wondering why he or she did that and never get
a conclusion. Maybe it was
money(usually one the most common reasons),
or some other kind interest, and then you feel
even worse. a year, you realize
how much time you spent worrying someone who
probably isn’t worth a second your thoughts, and
there has been an entire world out there waiting you.

It’s as difficult to understand why people do the things

they do as it is to understand why they don’t do what is
expected a “human being”. Sometimes it is
frightening to deal people, you never know what
they are going to do. There is something you need to know
about this: we are just like them. We may not look like them
and we may not do the things they do, but many
ways we are alike. Of course there are differences
you and a person like the “friend” we
mentioned , the way you look life.

If a person lives for his work then he doesn’t have a

life, he has a job. If he lives money and does
anything to get it, then he is miserable, when he
doesn’t have money, he has nothing. The Bible mentions that
many ways those who want to see it.
But men can choose to be blind and deaf, so it depends
the person.

126
127

The best part all this is that the world is

full wonderful people besides only “Frankensteins”.
That helps those us who don’t quite know what we
want to be. Their behavior will help us choose something
our lives. Human beings were given the right to
choose many things. We can choose between a tree and
a telephone pole, a friend and a briefcase full
money, life or some other kind
existence. Let’s hope we all learn how to
“see” life and make a choice that will give it a true
meaning, not only a pocket that is full.

Beaches are wonderful! Except when you are a

surfer and you don’t know it; the water and too
deep; front a very big wave;
strange objects the water; too far
the ground and you don’t know how to swim;
trying to sleep a long burning day
the sun suntan lotion;
a boat and a fish a very big mouth and
the water; full sand your
slippers; arriving the latest-style bikini and it
starts to rain; mention to your friend something
the beautiful girl lying the sand and find out
she’s his girlfriend; and when the waiter brings you the bill
the restaurant you had dinner.

Oh no, but beaches are wonderful! Except when you arrive

there and have to take all those things out the
car; spend a whole week the same house your
mother-in-law, find out the hamburger you ate was spoiled and
have to stay bed; spill all your new suntan lotion
the sand; step a dead fish; forget your
wallet some bench; smile a girl and she smiles
your younger brother; buy sun glasses there for US$
25.00 and find the same ones for US$ 5.00 the next
corner; or even lose your swimming suit the water!

Beaches are really wonderful, except when you notice you

don’t fit your swimming suit anymore; you are so
white that people can’t stand looking you; your
boyfriend looks the brunette that cute little
bikini; you burn your feet the sand; and meet your
boss there having told him you were sick.

Beaches are terrific! Even after you went through

all this and when you get the car to go home, you
find out your car has a flat tire...

B – FILL IN THE BLANKS WITH THE CORRECT PREPOSITIONS:

“UNDER”, “BEYOND”, “OF”, “IN”, “AFTER”, “BY”, “FOR”, “WITH”,
“ABOUT”, “INTO”, “ON”, “AT”, “BEHIND”, “FROM”, “BEFORE”.

I saw a very different person TV last night.

They say he has very strange powers. He can bend spoons and
forks and make vinegar smell like perfume. It was really
terrific to see something so amazing being done a human
being, and he told everyone his experiences and how he
made things happen. This isn’t the first person who I’ve
heard that does these kinds things. And that
makes me wonder why he doesn’t use his power a way
that would be help to the world.
Instead changing vinegar perfume, why not
changing mud food? All the spoons he bent could
be use those who have to eat their
hands lack spoons. It must be great to
have this kind power, and awful not to know how to
use it. all those coins he bent, some people
could eat more than a month! Am I wrong?

That seems to be the basic history mankind, he

has power and uses it to bend coins and spoons, create bombs
and faster airplanes, computers and so and doesn’t find
a solution the world’s basic needs. Have you tried
eating a fast airplane, a bomb or a computer? I don’t think
it tastes very good. A hamburger is cheaper and tastes much
better. All you need are about five coins but they can’t be
bent...

I think I’ll call all these powerful people my

house a beer some night and ask them to do
something!!!! They’ll probably bend all my spoons or throw a
bomb my backyard.

138
139

There must be an answer all the problems

this world, some door, our
eyes, or probably front us. Each person has
his own reality. Some people really need a faster airplane,
spoons to bend and people to show that ,others need
hamburgers or anything else they can eat. The fact is that
people don’t know how to see other realities.

The only way you can make people get together is to

watch a football game. Could you imagine how many spoons we
could bend if we could bring our minds together?
Unfortunately, all that is our knowledge and those
who have it don’t know what to do it, so if you
know how to bend coins, please don’t do that, give them
someone who needs them; and if you have a great
idea how to make a fast airplane, you
make it, try to find a faster way to make things better
this world; and if you are great making
bombs, why don’t you sleep one your
pillow instead? We don’t need bombs, bent spoons or faster
airplanes right now. We need to change the history
mankind and, this point , do everything we can
to avoid having to write hunger, wars, hate, and so
.The world we live is our
feet, and more need our care and attention
than the spoons and the airplanes.

Prezado Joe,

When arguments about the greatest heavyweight champions take

place, one is always on the short list: Joe Louis.
Louis was born Joseph Louis Barrow, in Lafayette, Alabama, on
May 13, 1914, the child of a poor family which later
to Detroit. His mother intended him to be a violinist,
but Joe used the lesson money to learn how in the
local gymnasium.
A good amateur, he turned professional in 1934, and began a
rapid rise to championship class. Within 15 months he knocked out
both Primo Carnera and Max Baer, recent champions.
He was managed by John Roxborough, a black businessman, and
trained by Jack Blackburn, a retired black boxer, until he
spotted by the ticket-speculator Mike Jacobs, who said
he could develop Louis into a champion. Blackburn’s contribution had
been vital. He had trained Louis to attack in a methodical
which was effective, and had also taught him to keep a
poker-face, so Louis did not arouse the racial that
other black fighters had earlier.
While he was in his prime(best possible shape) he was knocked-
out by Max Schmeling in the 12th round. Later Louis bypassed
Schmeling again after that.
Louisk was only 23 years old when he the second
non-white heavyweight champion of the world. He was known as the
“Brown Bomber” and kept the title of world heavyweight champion for
11 years and 8 months.
Having earned over 4.5 million dollars, he helped many poor
people by giving them , and soon he himself had none. So
he was unfortunately forced to make a comeback to pay
Tax demands, being beaten on points by Ezzard Charles and knocked-
out by Rocky Marciano, who was just his career.
The total number of official bouts(fights) in which Louis took
part was 70 and his defeats were three.

Prezados Senhores

A cidade é

estudando. Ah! Obrigado pelos biscoitos(meus favoritos) que você
mandou pela Tia Vilma.

Muitos beijos,
com amor

Andy
