1. Introduction This method statement outlines the procedure for carrying out building excavation
and backfilling works at1100 MW AL-HENAKIYAH SOLAR PV IPP PROJECT It details the steps to be
followed to ensure safety, efficiency, and quality throughout the excavation and backfilling process.

2. Scope The scope of work includes excavation of trenches or foundation pits as per the approved
drawings, removal of excess excavated material, and backfilling with approved materials in accordance
with specifications and engineering requirements.

3. Preparatory Work

 Review and understand the excavation and backfilling drawings, specifications, and relevant
safety procedures.

 Mobilize all necessary equipment, tools, and personnel to the site.

 Conduct a pre-construction survey to mark the excavation boundaries and identify any
underground utilities or obstructions.

 Obtain necessary permits and approvals from local authorities.

4. Excavation Procedure

 Set up barricades and warning signs around the excavation area to prevent unauthorized
access.

 Excavate the trenches or foundation pits to the required depth and dimensions using
appropriate excavation equipment (e.g., excavators, backhoe loaders).

 Ensure that the excavation walls are stable and sloped as per safety regulations or supported
using shoring systems if necessary.

 Remove excess excavated material from the site and dispose of it in accordance with
environmental regulations.

5. Backfilling Procedure

 Inspect the bottom of the excavation for any debris, water, or other contaminants before
backfilling.

 Place a suitable bedding material (e.g., sand or gravel) at the bottom of the excavation to provide
support and drainage.

 Gradually backfill the excavated area in layers, compacting each layer using compaction
equipment (e.g., vibratory rollers, plate compactors) to achieve the required density.

 Install any required utilities (e.g., pipes, cables) in accordance with approved drawings and
specifications before backfilling.

 Ensure that backfill material is free from large rocks, debris, or organic matter that could
compromise stability.

 Monitor and control moisture content in the backfill material to prevent settlement or erosion.

6. Quality Control

 Conduct regular inspections and quality checks throughout the excavation and backfilling
process to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.

 Test backfill material for compaction density, moisture content, and other relevant properties as
required.

 Document all relevant data, including inspection reports, test results, and any deviations from
the planned procedure.

7. Health and Safety

 Provide adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) to all personnel involved in the
excavation and backfilling works.

 Implement safety measures to prevent accidents, such as fall protection systems, trench safety
precautions, and equipment safety protocols.

 Conduct regular toolbox talks and safety briefings to ensure that all workers are aware of
potential hazards and safe work practices.

8. Environmental Considerations

 Minimize environmental impact by controlling dust, noise, and erosion during excavation and
backfilling activities.

 Properly dispose of excavated material and any waste in accordance with environmental
regulations and project requirements.

 Implement erosion control measures, such as silt fences or sediment traps, to prevent soil
runoff and contamination of surrounding areas.

9. Emergency Procedures

 Establish emergency response procedures and designate responsible personnel to handle

emergencies such as cave-ins, equipment failures, or accidents.

 Ensure that all workers are trained in emergency procedures and know how to evacuate the site
safely if necessary.

 Maintain communication channels with emergency services and nearby facilities for prompt
assistance if needed.

10. Completion and Handover

 Upon completion of excavation and backfilling works, conduct a final inspection to ensure that
all requirements have been met.

 Prepare as-built drawings and documentation to record any changes or deviations from the
original plans.

 Hand over the completed works to the client or relevant stakeholders, including any relevant
documentation and warranties.

11. References

 Refer to applicable codes, standards, and specifications governing excavation and backfilling
works, including but not limited to [insert relevant codes and standards].

12. Revision History

 Document any revisions or updates to the method statement, including the date of revision and
the reason for the change.
This method statement for building excavation and backfilling is to be followed by all personnel
involved in the project to ensure safe and efficient execution of the works. Any deviations from this
procedure must be approved by the project manager or relevant authority.
