A. Motivation
Draw the corresponding item under the elements and principle of arts that you can associate with
Asian arts.
B.Introduction
Indonesia has a rich culture that was formed by the interactionof Western and Asian influences.
Western ideas were brought by Portuguese traders in the 16th century and the dutch colonist in the 18th
century. Indonesian culture also has a mixture of Indian,Arabic, Chinese, and Malayan influence.
The traditional costume for women is the Kebaya, a long-sleeved blouse usually worn with a sarong (a
tabular cloth wrapped around the hips). The men wear batik shirts with ordinary pants or the sarong for
special occasions.
Weaving is both an art form and an industry. Batik is recognized as an important identity of
Indonesian culture. Batik is a wax- resist process of dyeing.
1.Songket is an elaborate handwoven fabric with intricate pattern of gold or silver thread creating a
shimmering effect.
2.Ikat is the dyeing technique used to pattern textiles. This process uses the resist dyeing method on the
yarns before they are used to weave the fabric.
Puppetry is important in Indonesian culture. Puppets are used in performances to tell stories of ancient
epics and modern stories. The most popular is Wayang kulit, a shadow puppet play. The puppets are
flat figures made of leather attatched to sticks.
Architecture
The architecture of Indonesia reflects the diverse cultures that have shaped its history. The traditional
house is built on stilts. The house has saddle-shaped roof, except in Java and Bali.
Even if Indonesia has embraced Islam, it has a strong Hindu-Buddhist tradition. This is evident in
Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world.

Some small figures or statues are made of metal and stone. The sculpture of Indonesia has traces og
Indian influence.

Compare and contrast the Palembang Great Mosque and the Borobudur, using the elements and
principles of arts.

The student will analyze the given Batik design by answering the given question below.
1. What are lines are used in the cloth? What mood do these lines convey?
2. What shapes are used in the cloth? Do they go along with the lines? Explain your answer.
E. Abstraction
Notable Indonesian performing arts includes ritual dances, dance drama that retelling the ancient
epics, legends, and stories. The visual arts of Indonesia are as abundant as they are diverse.
F. Application
Indonesia has maintained its art culture even with the interaction of the foreign influences like those
of the Portuguese traders and Dutch colonist. Indonesian arts are known for their unique weaving
techniques, intricate jewelry designs, and distinctive puppet-making practices.
