Assignment 1 (evaluation 37 points)

Mystic – Calculating Draught, trim, corrections

The vessel is in port. Density of the water: 1,025 tonnes/m³.

For the “Mystic” the reading on the draught marks:
Draught Forward = 3,50 m. and Aft = 5,50 m.
Questions:
A) Calculate for this given situation (thus before loading etc.):

(2) 1. The draught forward on the perpendicular, corrected from mark to

perpendicular.

(1) 2. The total trim on the perpendiculars.

(3) 3. Correction on the draught as a result of the trim.

(3) 4. The average draught (Taverage) corrected for the trim.

(2) 5. Displacement corrected for the trim.(Δcorrect)

(3) 6. The position of the Longitudinal Centre of Gravity (LCG) in relation to the
Aft Perpendicular.

The vessel starts to load and bunker as follows:

Hold 1A → 50 tonnes boxes Bananas (general cargo=bales)
Hold 2C+2D → 150 tonnes boxes Bananas on pallets.
Empty tank 1 (= No. 4) full.

B) Questions for this new situation after loading:

(5) 1. Calculate the XG2 (= LCG2) related to the Aft Perpendicular(App)

(1) 2. Calculate the new correct Displacement ( Δcorrect2)

(1) 3. Calculate the new correct draught (Tcorrect2)

(1) 4. Calculate with the new Tcorrect2: XB (LCB), XA (= LCF) and ETM.

Calculate for this new situation:

(5) 1. The new Total trim

(3) 2. The new trim Aft.

(1) 3. The new trim Forward.

(3) 4 The new draught Forward.

(3) 5 The new draught Aft.

Assignment 2 (evaluation 27 points) (use the attachment)

Mystic – loading a container with a crane.

.
Details: The Mystic is in port, no list. Density of the water: 1,015 tonnes/m³.
Draught (T) on even keel: T = 6,02 m. , KG = 6,59 m.
No slack tanks.

Data: With the ship's crane a container, 25 tonnes, is loaded. Head of the crane
maximum 20 m. above the Keel and the spread is 16 m. maximum away from
the centre line (weight of the loading gear to be ignored)

Questions:

(5) a. Calculate the Displacement once the container has been picked up.

(8) b. Calculate the KG' when the spread is 16 m.

(3) c. Calculate the maximum heeling moment during loading of the container.

(10) d. Determine with the help of the curve of stability the maximum list of the
vessel during the loading of the container.

The container is positioned on the main-deck 7 m. away from the centre line,
the list caused by this is compensated by pumping ballast-water from one
double bottom tank into another DB-tank. The centres of gravity of these tanks
are 4 m away from the centre line.

Question:

(4) Calculate the weight of the ballast-water to be pumped from one tank to the to
the other tank to correct the list.

Assignment 3 (valuation 20 points)

Dangerous goods – IMDG-code - BC-code (Use the attachments)

(1) a. What means the abbreviation: IMDG-code?

(1) b. There is also the IMSBC-code.

What is a substantial difference between The IMDG- and IMSBC-code?

A number of tank-containers with ALLYL BROMIDE (UN No. 1099) will be

loaded on board

(2) c. What is the IMO danger-class of ALLYL BROMIDE?

(2) d. In column (4) “Subsidiary risk(s)” we find: “6.1” and “P”.

Explain these findings briefly.

(1) e. What is the Ems-number of ALLYL BROMIDE?

(1) f. When is this Ems-numb number used?

(2) g. How is this Ems-number then used?

From some other tank-containers all we know about the contents -

is the UN-number = 3053 (check with the attachments)

(2) h. What is the IMO- danger-class of this commodity?

Briefly explain your answer.

(2) i. What is the Proper Shipping Name (PSN) of this commodity?

(2) j. Is there any “Additional Risk” with this commodity?

If so, what risk?

(4) k. Under what condition is it allowed to stow these tank-containers together?

(ALLYL BROMIDE and UN-number 3053).

Assignment 4 (valuation 20 points)

Container Transport

(1) a1 The capacity of a container-vessel is given TEU's.

What is understood by a TEU?

(1) a2 What are the most common ISO-(standard)measurements of a container

with regard to: Length, Width and Height.

Of three containers A, B and C the following positions (slots) on board of a container-

vessel are given:

A = 01 04 82 B = 03 00 85 C = 08 05 04.

(6) b. Explain of each container A, B and C as accurate as possible its position on

board. Use a sketch(es). Think about size of the container, its longitudinal and
athwart-ships position, its vertical position (layer), on deck or under deck.

(2) c1. Mention apart from the closed standard container, 5 other types

(2) c2 Mention for each of the aforementioned ( c1) types the preferable cargo.

The content of a 20' container is 32 m3, the maximum allowable payload is 26 tonnes.
The container has to be loaded with two commodities to its maximum in weight and
measurement, FCL (Full Container Load). These commodities are:
Boxes nails, stowage factor (sf) = 0,4 m3/t and
Boxes yarns, stowage factor (sf) = 3,4 m3/t

(2) d1. How many tonnes of boxes with nails can be stowed on the floor bearing in
mind that the boxes with yarns have to be stowed on top of the nails?

(2) d2. How many tonnes of boxes with yarns can be stowed on top of the boxes with
nails?

(2) d3. What is the Volume (m3) of the boxes (with nails) stowed in the container.

(2) d4. What is the Volume (m3) of the boxes (with yarns) stowed on top of the boxes
with nails?
